Walking London’s East End at Whitechapel in the rainy early hours at 2am, following in the footsteps of Jack the Ripper, roaming the streets and visiting some of the locations he made infamous, though obviously they would have looked very different back in 1888 during the Victorian era.
Recorded - Wednesday 20th October 2021, around 2am

Quite a lot of the East End looks nothing like it would have in 1888. Much of the east end of London was bombed out during the War. That, plus general changes over the decades. To be honest, I understand that large swathes of Whitechapel were radically changed even before the 1940s, as the JTR events caused the powers that be to start paying some attention to the awful conditions there. It's still a pretty run down area, but now populated with some gentrifying art-school types.

As someone from across the pond who has long held a fascination for the Whitechapel murders this has been recommended to me a few times and only now did I check it out. I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner. It's one thing reading about it, and even taking an online tour with a guide doesn't do justice to walking the streets in silence during the time of day when Jack himself roamed. Seeing your shadow on the wall even spooked me a couple of times.

I would never be brave enough to do this bike ride myself in that area (especially at that time of night) so thank you for allowing me to experience it vicariously through you. 🙂

I watch your videos daily looking for areas to visit in London and I gotta say I’m obsessed and love them! You be safe doing those 2am creepy walks though but I love the descriptions of the spots you stopped at! I hope to see a Halloween walk too! 🖤🔪💀 👻 🎃

A very spooky walk, intriguing and nerve-racking too. Was surprised to see those people standing on the corner in middle of a wet night wearing light clothing and SHORTS.

That was so good ! Because of the rain and the time in the early hours of the morning it was filmed by the silent cameraman, it rendered the mostly deserted streets a more eerie and sinister sense of doom and gloom. As to the cameraman, you’re a braver man than I Gunga Din ! Thank you.

I definitely concur with all the comments on here, it was an eerie place, then and now. We are all watching from far flung places but you are out there doing the walk, I like to imagine a bodyguard walking very quietly behind you so that you feel safe but I think I am dreaming !! Take care out there, but do keep bringing us these amazing vids, thank you WW !!
