wow. I used to live at the other side of the Leabridge roundabout back when it had those underground tunnels you could use to get to the other side. Back then the 38 route was from Leytonstone to Victoria.
@Wanderizm3 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, interesting - quite a long journey from Leytonstone 👍 and do you know whether the underground tunnels are still open? I also lived around Clapton area but did not know about the tunnels.
@j_thom3 жыл бұрын
@@Wanderizm No, those tunnels are no longer open. As my family tells me, they were closed and the inner area of the roundabout was filled in and became a stopping area for busses toward the end of the 1980's (or maybe the dawn of the 90's). Previously the tunnels led to that center area of the roundabout, and that middle circular area was open to the sky. Unfortunately At that time Clapton had earned itself the dubious name of "The Murder Mile". There began to be anti-social behavior, muggings and I hear there a person or two was killed in those tunnels under there..victim of a violent robbery I think. I believe the rise of violent crime and that very lightly policed underground area was the reason why it was shuttered. Police them days seem to transition from walking their beat to driving their patrol routes. These were the grey days of the Thatcher era. Hackney was NOT the gentrifying borough that it has become. Those were grim grey times indeed. But I was young enough to be non-the-wiser about it. I had emigrated by that time. The house I lived in is on Prout road.. the literal first road to come to when you are on that other side of the roundabout on the right (Upper Clapton). As a kid I have the fondest memories of that area: I rode my bike around and generally horsed about under there with friends every now and then when on the way to the arcade games that used to be in a betting shop across the road from Clapton Pond. I think it was Dig-Dug and Defender that were the games there at the time.. Every time I come back to visit, I make sure to put my eyes on and lay my hands on the 'ol manor. It was a real pleasure to see these haunts again through your vid. Thank you.. And thanks for the extra efforts you put into with that caption information. It really added engaging content to the journey.

@@j_thom wow, thanks for this. I love it. It’s fascinating to read about the area’s history from viewers who lived and grew up there. Thank you. 👍 Hackney has gone through a mega-regeneration in the past decade. I do revisit the area quite often and I love the markets there! 😊

In the mid 1960s I attended a college in Walthamstow and caught a 69 or 249 bus from the Bell pub down to Plaistow station. In those days the 38 bus also stopped at the Bell and I think they started from Chingford. The 38's were distinctive RT buses with the route number displayed in a panel near the roof of the bus. They were always heading to Victoria. Great video as always.

The only thing wrong with looking at these video's on a 86-inch 4K tv. Is that it shows how much of London is a grim, and depressing place too live.
