Bermondsey is a district within the London Borough of Southwark in south-east London. It is surrounded by Rotherhithe, Deptford, Walworth and Peckham.
By the late 19th century, Bermondsey had become synonymous with manufacturing. From 1866, Bermondsey was known as Biscuit Town owing to the presence of Peek, Frean and Co.
Bermondsey has always been associated with the tough working classes but has evolved in recent decades into a mixture of local authority housing and luxury apartments. It now contains some of the Capital’s priciest properties, particularly when overlooking the Thames.
By the 19th century, this part of London had become a slum and was notoriously dangerous. It was widely regarded as one of the worst areas of London. Charles Dickens was a former resident and used his experiences and local knowledge to depict his novel ‘Oliver Twist’ from here. It was in St Saviour's Dock that villain Bill Sykes met his grizzly end.
This is an area steeped in history, documented back to the Domesday Book of 1086. Until 1889, it was officially within the county of Surrey. In addition to the Thames, it hosts another river which is largely enclosed now.
The Neckinger rises in Southwark and flows one and a half miles into the Thames at St Saviour's Dock. The name 'Neckinger' is believed to be a derivative of the phrase ‘devils neckcloth', a colloquialism for hangman’s noose. Many pirates were hung here in the 17th century in full view of other river users as a warning to keep within the Kings Law.
Tower Bridge forms a border between Bermondsey and Southwark and is perhaps one of the most iconic bridges in the World as well as a globally recognised symbol of London. It took 8 years to build between 1886 and 1894. It’s two raising platforms, or Bascules, raise to give a width of 200 feet and a headroom of 135 feet to allow access for taller ships to the dock of London. It is raised over a 1000 times a year and is crossed daily by over 40,000 motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. It has an upper level walkway, originally intended to enable workers to continually traverse the river if the bridge was raised. Now used by sightseers, it has a glass floor 137 feet above the water.
Shad Thames offers premium boutique shopping with bars and restaurants as well as offering great views of St Katherine’s Dock and Wapping. It's also home to the Design Museum.

I lived in the Old Justice pub (0.55) 1952-1957. My granparents were publicans and my Dad grew up there. I was born in 1952 and my sister in 1954. I remember the area around the pub was bombed badly during the war but the pub was not hit. Still remember standing behind the bar and my Nan serving the dockers eels and mash. Goilden days long gone

Lived Bermondsey all my life...it has changed a lot. Many locals have moved away because it has become a place for the wealthy in many areas. I still love the area i grew up in and still live near Surrey Quays....i prefer to call it Surrey Docks as it should be called.

Same in Manchester. Salford docks became Salford Quays. One word adds about 75k to the price of a property.

My Baker ancestors were Watermen on the Thames from around 1805 (or possibly earlier) until the latter part of the 19th century and lived in Bermondsey, or more specifically Horsleydown. They lived in various places, including Back Street (no longer there) and Printers Place (which is). I am sure life must have been hard for them. My great great great grandfather was buried at St Mary Magdalen in 1832. Two of his grandsons married two girls from the same family of Horder, who were leather workers (finishers) and gradually they moved away from Bermondsey to Plumstead and Thornton Heath, where my father was born. My great grandfather moved from being a Waterman's apprentice to a commercial clerk and later a Corn Meter (a weights and measures man for the Corn Exchange). He then set up his own business as a corn merchant (also member of the London Corn Exchange) and the business ran successfully until my father and uncle shut it down in the 1980s. They had an office in Fenchurch St and later close to Smithfield Market.

The ramp down into the underpass at 1:09 - One time I fell off my skateboard and managed to massively graze my right leg from below my knee to the top of my thigh. The slide at 1:49 - I was still going down that in the late 80s/early 90s. Tower block at 2:22 - I made a load of paper aeroplanes and watched them fly from the top floor... As a kid I felt like I could see the world from up there. Also went from the bottom to the top using only the stairs. That got the calves burning. Dockhead at 2:27 - Logo Press used to be a barbershop called Just Men but we all called it Dirty Den's. Dennis, on his own took time and care while cutting hair. Coffee with hair in the cup and horse racing on his little 14" TV and so much swearing. A true legend. This sandwich bar at 2:31 - Used to be the go to Kebab shop in the area. Hassan Bros. After this one closed down he went to his brother's shop on Tower Bridge Road. "Chilli Sauce?" Alley at 2:41 - We used to call it "The public right of way" and it was for us, just an alley that led to a set of stairs that led in to St Saviour's Dock. This is where we used to go and smoke so we wouldn't get caught. I could honestly tell a story about every single place in this video... Thank you for this video and Thank you for giving me the gumption to go back see it now. I'm sure it won't live up to my memories but I would like to go down that underpass ramp again and play ball games where the "No Ball Games" signs are... As we always used to.

Wow! this just came up in my recommendations.... can't think why!.... my mother and father and families all grow up there including me and my siblings..... we lived on lower rd near to Harry stears the old fruit shop on the corner.... we all grow up around sutton dwellings and surry docks and loved going to Southwark park as a kid.... I remember the farm at the back of surrydocks some where I used to spent a lot of time.... Me and my family emigrated to Australia in the 80's.... I did not think i would remember all of the surroundings from so long ago.... but the memories all came flooding back.... thank you it's good to go back in time loved to reminisce♥️ from the land down under Australia

I'd love to know more ( and perhaps see some photos of my secondary school in Unicorn Lane , a tiny cul-de-sac at the end of which was All Saints school which was apparently a junior school built in earlier Victorian times. It was nestled between the NAAFI building and the doss House in which the author of Down & out in London & Paris dwelt( George Orwell) I have not had any success with the history but would like to know more. The school closed in 1960.

Tower Bridge does not form a border between bermondsey (Town) and southwark (Borough)! Bermondsey is IN southwark. The only two "boroughs" seperated by tower bridge is southwark and Tower Hamlets.

In the 80's the little old lady that was in the greengrocers down The Blue used to give me cabbage leaves for my budgie. Also I never like going shopping with my mum, unless it was down The Blue. Although pulling that tartan shopping trolley down St. James' Road was missions.
