I used to go to Smithfield and have a steak breakfast - with a pint of beer at 7am in the 80's! Perfect.

I live in London, and also enjoy exploring the capital. On weekends I chose a route and walk for hours. For example, yesterday I walked from Barking and Epping forest, passing Woodford and Laughton. I had no idea that Woodford and Laughton were such affluent areas and so many beautiful buildings there. I have been living here for 20 years and still love this city. :)

Joolz, you could make a fortune by creating a guide book of the different areas of London. Joolz tours castles, Joolz tours the quirkies, Joolz tours Pubs (best seller no doubt), the possibilities are endless. Either way, another wonderful walk, I'm exhausted, time for a pint, cheers.

My old neighborhood, I lived in Grays Inn Building / Rosebury Ave. / Holborn / EC 1 in the mid 1980's ... what a great time (I was 24/25) it was.

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your work. London is so dear to my heart, which is odd since I have never been outside of the US in my life. Being able to see the wonderful minutiae that I read of talked about by such an amazing guide is a real treat.

Its sad the contrast between the lovely old medieval, georgian, and victorian buildings, and the horrible rubbish they build now, not just in London, but everywhere. Good video Joolz.

The reason the metropolitan tunnels look so grand, they were built to great western broad gauge and are the widest tunnels on the underground, I drove trains on the met for, 34 years.

This man should have his own tv show! Another excellent video Joolz old chap.

I worked for a couple of years in the early 80’s further up Farringdon Rd. Near Mt. Pleasant, opposite Exmouth Market ... The Penny Black Pub & Clark’s Pie & Mash were regular haunts ... along with a Pub on Clerkenwell Green, the name escapes me but it was a Chiswick Brewery/Fuller’s Pub ... sold the best pint of London Pride going ! It was near the FreeMason’s Temple, which I think there was a shot of in the video. These videos bring back some great memories ... I was born in Victoria Park, Hackney and worked in London until 1990 when I left the UK. Great to show these videos to my kids ! Keep ‘em coming me ol’ China !

The first trains in the 'cut and cover' tunnels used the GWR broad gauge steam locomotives. That's why the tunnel between Paddington and Farringdon is much larger then others. And again, a splendid video. Amazing how much there is to see in areas that I thought I was quite familiar with.

Joolz, another great video! Spent many weeks in the vicinity in the 80s at a meat training college linked to the market. Years before that, my grandad worked there as a meat porter. Keep up the good work.

Love this. Was born in St Bartholomew’s hospital in the 70s and lived in Clerkenwell until the early 90s lovely to revisit and learn some new history. Great video.

Nice nostalgia. I went to college at the Central School on Southampton Row and there were several technicians there, all cockneys. I believe they had worked in Clerkenwell and further to the East when there were factories there. I liked the fact that it was a Dickens area so I felt like a David Copperfield, an outsider trying to make it in London.

The first time I was in the Fox and Anchor was when I was working for Xerox (office in New Oxford Street) in the mid-80's and those of us who attained our annual sales target were given a day off and expenses to have a 24-hour drinking and eating session - starting and finishing with breakfast at The F&A.

Hi, when i was a young chap i used to work in that building with the To let sign (1:56) about 30 years ago, was having a cup of tea and saw from my window a man in a pin stripe suit and a bowler hat (Not You) acting suspiciously by a litter bin calmly he slipped a neat brown package into it, so i told my workmate and before i knew it the area was cordoned off and the bomb squad was there, they retrieved the package and found out it was a pile of filthy magazines !, Take care, keep up the videos.

Tally Ho! Very interesting video. There was many fine locations for photo sessions. I like to take pictures about old and architectual bildings, so your videos are nice tool to plan next journey to London. One of my favourite cities.

The curving ramps lead down to the now-disused underground railway goods depots. After these closed, they were used as car parks. These goods depots were not part of Farringdon Station or ever used by passengers. These depots were owned by separate private railway companies. They were each connected by rail to the Metropolitan Widened Lines, a double track which ran from Kings Cross via Farringdon to Moorgate, alongside the existing Metropolitan and Circle lines. The Widened Lines connected to the West to the Great Northern Railway ( by tunnels under Kings Cross Station), the Midland Railway ( by tunnels under St. Pancras ) and the Great Western Railway ( beside Paddington ) and also to the South, by a sharp curved tunnel to the London Chatham and Dover Railway running up from Blackfriars, so a surprising amount of freight, mainly cattle, fish and poultry, was brought by train directly into the underground Smithfield Depots from all over England. Cattle were brought into the depots on steam-hauled freight trains, unloaded, and driven up the ramps for sale in Smithfield Market. The Farringdon to Kings Cross section of the Widened Lines remains as part of the busy Thameslink route. Joolz video is now five years old and yes Smithfield Market did close and was relocated to Dagenham but the listed building is not only being retained and renovated but is being converted into a new and much larger location for the Museum of London, formerly at London Wall, which will open in 2026 and which I think will be fabulous ( and I hope the nearby pubs will still open very early...).

The river fleet became part of the sewer network that was made by bazaljet (probably spelt wrong)to carry effluent away from the city and River Thames to the sea some parts of it can still be seen apparently
