What a super video,if a driver had never been to this port,you just do not know what to do,any help makes the job so easy,please keep the vids coming.I'm retired now but never got to work on containers,all my work was curtain siders,flat beds,and box vans.These type of videos keep me in touch with the modern trucking industry. Well done.

Hi again pal, thanks for recording these port visits, they’re very helpful, I just delivered my 1st export box here & the size of the place overwhelmed me & broke my concentration on the entry test, I don’t think I would of passed if not for channel. Southampton in the morning so I’ll be watching that clip while I’m here 👍

Fascinating how container terminals work and how they manage to pick the right one from all those thousands of containers on the quay at any one time.
@HGVMe6 жыл бұрын
Steve Sutherland that's not all. Sometimes we get sent in to some container storage yard or other to pick up an empty, the number for which we then have to call in. If we call in and give an erroneous number they know that box number is a wrong un. I believe it's a database of equipment numbers which the lines offer to their preferred hauliers, so all parties know what equipment is in use in which country. Either way it's quite a feat to keep on top of I should imagine.

I noticed that you can go to the office if you are not in possession of a terminal ID card. Here in Sydney, you Must be in possession of an ID card for all three container wharves, Before you go there!. You do tis by doing an on line Q&A session, well in advance (weeks) before you go to any container wharf.
@HGVMe6 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter. We have a similar system for Southampton Container terminal on the south coast. Where you take an online awareness video and assessment test. Sadly none of the UK container terminals have a standardised method of issuing port ID/authority. So each port requires a different set of hoops to jump through before you can access the container terminal.

Hello, thanks for getting back to me, regarding port access cards. Ours are issued by the Port Authority, - State Government-(or actually their preferred contractor). It is called a "Maritime Industry Security Card".(M I S C). This includes a federal and state police check. They have something similar for airport workers. Usually, the employer will pay for it, or, if you prefer, you can pay for it then claim the cost back when you put in your tax return at the end of the financial year, which is what I always did. Thanks again for showing us your system, I found it very interesting. I noticed similarities to our container wharves hear. The newest port was called," Hutchison wharf", and their cranes are also remotely operated. But there are always plenty of people running around in "utes" who can contact the office if you have a problem. At Hutchison, you have to stand in a 3 sided shelter with a swipe screen and a pressure mat which you must remain on until the crane is well clear of your truck. I always found DP World to be the worst wharf for delays. This is the one where you park next to the row of containers so you cannot get out of your truck, once you are out of the parking area and on the wharf area. Your London Gateway looks to be the same as Hutchison, except there is no shelter/swipe screen where you stand. Best wishes, Peter Cunningham.

Hi Peter. Gateway is actually a DPWorld port funnily enough. What I failed to mention in the video is we have a similar system to the pressure mat in a three sided shelter, but ours is in the guise of a gadget called a 'Presence' button. Which the driver must hold whilst the container transaction takes place. To 'prove' his location while the crane operates. No button? No box. Yeah we have the guys in the Utes too. But they're thin on the ground so a call to terminal control would always be the first action in case of a problem. The Ute would roll up a little afterwards. By the way its super interesting hearing how things work in Australia so thanks so much for jumping in. I hope the other container guys are enjoying hearing things from your perspective too.

Great job mate, really useful video. Any chance of doing the same for Felixstowe. A great help for anyone new to containers or coming back after a long absence. Should be mandatory viewing for all new guys...Cheers

As I'm not a trucker please don't think this a silly question. When reversing on the bay do you have any kind of lights to tell you when you are in the right place. Or do you have to guess where to stop. Great video by the way.
@HGVMe6 жыл бұрын
Interesting question when you bear in mind the crane is computer operated, so no crane driver to see exactly where I've stopped. All I did was 'touch parked' as if I were backing onto a regular loading bay (READ: A controlled collision into the wall behind me =) and then pulled forward a couple of inches. Worked for me :-)

@@HGVMe ... There are yellow lines painted on all the bays, so you know exactly how far to reverse

You must also have your slot number (given at the time of vehicle booking) before you go to any wharf.
@HGVMe6 жыл бұрын
You get the slot number only when you present yourself at the port. Previous to that we are given only a VBS (Vehicle Booking System) number. This VBS gets us onto the port, where an on port computer terminal then informs us of our slot number. Which in London Gateway is directly adjacent to where it landed off the ship.

Where do u do the twist-locks on your slot,I'm going there for the first time on Monday. My boss gave me my card but iv never done an assessment only for Southampton

What happens if your container is not landed properly onto the trailer? Or if it comes out doors front and you need it doors rear?.
@HGVMe6 жыл бұрын
Thats a very good question which I can't answer as its never happened to me. There is an intercom where we stand whilst the crane loads the box onto our trailer, direct through to the container control office. I'm sure that would be the first call to make.
@letsgocamping883 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure an operator based in a central office controls crane for the proportion of the lift over the haulier, outside of the fenced off area.
@nickmeardon23332 жыл бұрын
The cranes have sensors/cameras to assist in the loading on to trailers, as well as taking off of the trailers. You have to press a. Large red emergency button. If anything goes wrong you release the button. This stops the crane immediately. An operator will then talk to you through an intercom. I believe a member of security/staff assist, will attend to resolve issues. This was the most computer oriented driven Dock site I delivered/collected from. It was very daunting but the safest I felt in any port.
