I’m reading The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream, and I can hear your voice in my head during the more descriptive passages, especially the parts set in Lambeth. (And the book starts just down the road from me in Joliet.)

Hi Katy, Did you know about the Archeological Society offices that was housed in basement of the Old Stock Exchange?? I found a Piece of Roman pottery in 1950, i was just a child then, and that was where I had taken it…..interesting??? Also, what do you know about Toynbee Hall in the East End of London? I do hope you reply. Thank you.

I used to live in Egham, Surrey, Frederic Cournet is buried there in St John's Church, and a plaque says it was after the last duel in England

I'd to visit the Hardy Tree one day and that Alley (love an historic alley). That square looks beautiful too but I'd be nervous to hang around as it looks just so private and secluded.

The video here is probably a bit deceptive as actually on the left in the courtyard is a restaurant with tiny outdoor terrace! We visit the Hardy Tree on my Kings Cross public walk ☺️

The Hardy Tree is no more. It fell down last winter. Memento mori.

The duels were not posited to have taken place in the alley but in the square it leads into - the alley being sufficiently narrow that a lookout could be posted at the end of it.Whether true or not I've no idea - but it's plausible as a location.

Yes I’m referring to the square. Have you stood in there? There’s not much room! Given most other more famous duels happened in open spaces like fields or woods I’m sceptical. Would also be noisy!

@@LookUpLondon I have & it's not very roomy. There's a place called Tokenhouse Yard near Moorgate which I believe was owned in the 17th Century by one William Petty.Having upset someone,he was challenged to a duel.Given the opportunity to choose the venue & weapons - & being elderly & short-sighted - he chose carpenters axes & a dark cellar.Seeing no glory in such a duel, his opponent withdrew his challenge.
