I live in London, one of the few that can literally say he's 10-15 minutes walking distance from the Buckingham Palace. Live in Victoria, Westminster, and can say that it has been the most unique and wonderful living experiences of my life. I've been all over globally, but no place have I ever felt, more connected, than in London. The only rub here is the subsequent affects from Brexit, COVID and the war in Europe, that is affecting all of us in London with the cost of living, lack of infrastructure, staff and supply issues.

I've lived in London all my life, and as a teenager I love the freedom the amazing transport links provide. I can go anywhere in the city in an hour, at any time of the day. There's so much to see and do, so much to look at. You can tell how the city has been built up over hundreds of years; it just feels so organic, a feeling that no US city could match. I am lucky to live here.

@@davidmin3583 Truss's 30+ billion pound devastation of the economy; the steep rise in mortgage rates in a country with a tradition of variable-rate mortgages (and thus an expected collapse of housing prices as many homeowners default); Sunak/Hunt's slashing of public service funding; the prospect of every household needing to find thousands of extra pounds to heat their homes through the winter... that's for starters. Behind it all, Brexit's dramatic drop in trade with what used to be their main trading partner. The UK is looking particularly fragile at present, moreso than it has (arguably) for centuries.

Interesting video, for those romanticising London let me reveal some facts often overlooked (some were touched on); The video mentioned London was filthy. It still is filthy! When I used to work there I recall the stink in the morning in central LDN. The streets are grimy! Western Megacity wise, prob only NYC could challenge it for filth. The pollution is so bad they had to introduce a clean air zone! Plus charge a fortune in tax for drivers of most vehicles. The rent and house prices are insanely high & arguably unrealistic for single people wanting to live alone unless they have a high income. You don't get much space for your money either & could live significantly better in another UK city for the same price. Travel on the underground/metro costs a small fortune and if you work in central London, a large portion of your wages will be spent on your travel and housing. The metro system is outdated as it was built in the 19th century so is mainly cramped. At rush hour it is horrendous. It can be a lonely city too as people do not even want to make eye contact with you. If you go to other UK cities you'll notice they're more friendly than Londoners in general. The bus is cheaper than the underground but is slow & the traffic is terrible, it is hard to get anywhere quickly. They had to introduce a congestion charge to drive through central London & the zone has been expanding. The crime rate is relatively high. You should prob not walk alone in dark quiet areas alone. There have been several high-profile random murders of women. However, I guess it could be worse, given the size of the city. Empire city is a fitting title for the video as its wealth from the industrial revolution is a direct result of plundering and pillaging around the world, as most of Europe was overtly doing at that time & the legacy of that leads to the next point. Not to be all negative - the city is super diverse & you can find every type of person there largely due to its imperial empire past. Whatever you're into, you'll find it there & there's always something to do if you have money (or for free if you're imaginative enough)

You missed two key points. One is the very unique jurisdiction that is the City of London Corporation. Granted by William the Conqueror, the City enjoys local sovereign rule and can exempt itself from acts of parliament. Financial regulation is often just a handshake agreement. It is the ultimate offshore location right in the middle of Greater London. The second is that London is literally the center of the world in that it has the lowest average air or sea mile distance to all other major cities on earth. Heathrow is therefore the most connected airport on the planet.

I live in New York and it is one of the best cities in the world but this here shows that one thing that NYC lacks the most is the long chain of highly important historical events. Also the growth of London that the author talks about in the period of 1600-1700 here, mainly comprises of the wealth looted from countries like India and increasing the Sovereign Grant aka Royal Wealth.

Lol new york is overrated as f#ck.there's barely anything historic, it's just giant skyscrapers And London today has nothing to do with 1600s or 1700s British empire. Most of its very recently built after Margaret thacher came. Also, don't new york was directly funded by American slave trade.so you don't get to criticize others🙃

I agree, although before flooding huge areas it’s worth remembering that the U.K. is the only nation on earth with an entirely privatised water system. Guaranteed profits for water companies disincentivises investment in infrastructure and has lead to billions of litres of water being lost each year, and mass dumping of raw sewage into water ways to cut costs. We need to establish public good instead of profit as the organising principle of our water system, and address the issues with our current infrastructure before flooding new lands.

There are areas of London that you can go to that aren't busy at all. Fitzrovia and Bloomsbury are really chilled on weekends. And if you wanna experience more of London's history, you can go to bank and monument are for some historic walks there and that entire area is empty on the weekends! In fact, that area of London is so empty on weekend not even coffee shops and food places are open there! Unfortunately, you still have to go through the really busy areas to get anywhere empty and chilled 😊

London is an over crowed expensive polluted dirty city. Outside the tourist center and very expensive area it also has some of the most deprived areas in Britain. It has areas with the worst crime rates. Traffic moves round the center slower than in the days of the horse drawn carriage. The underground and transport systems are old and in need of constant upgrading dispite of massive investment.The cost of the Cross rail alone could have paid rail improvements in the north of England that have been put on hold for up to 30 years. Other infrastructure is crumbling the sewage system is having an update costing billions The airports are at near capacity. Over the last 30 years, there have been various proposals, but it's so politically sensitive nothing has been done. Very little social housing has been built and what is built is high end and sold to overseas investors. It basically a city edging to breaking point with it costing the country billions to keep it together with sticking plaster solutions. While the rest of the country has to scramble for the crumbs and left over. Every attempt to readdress this problem is met with a barrage of complaints. London is a city that can not continue on the path it is on. Without a rethink and strong imagative leadership and a chance in the mindset of its population, particularly in the London NIMBY attitude, it will be appearing on the list of the world's worst cities

Billions of pounds of dirty Russian money has flowed into the UK economy via the City of London, thanks to the Tory governments from 2010 - 2021. Putin was delighted with Brexit because it removed EU oversight of money-laudering and tax evasion/avoidance, so the UK became a haven for dirty Russian money in the years leading up to Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

Not Megacities, but i wonder what TDC would say of big cities well in the countryside like: (For example) Madrid in Spain or Denver in the US. Cities position in the middle of their countries. Out of big river systems and around big agricultural zones. My question is: If we have to live in a future where rising sea levels, climate change and lack of space for build in costal places put in risk many of todays megacities. This cities well in the countryside will benefict the most by not share that problems and have good transportation systems already in place, even if they face droughts?
@TDC_TheDocumentaryChannel
@TDC_TheDocumentaryChannel Жыл бұрын
Great observation, Joaquin! I completely agree and have been thinking about this too: what are the challenges to larger cities rising in the vast middle of America? Closest to that is Chicago, nearly a MC, but it is on Lake Michigan... Water supplies seem to be the most important issue, besides the jobs to sustain a large population. As land and housing costs continue to rise, I think we'll continue to see more and more people settling further and further inland. Also, with COVID taking telework mainstream, I think the need to congregate in massive cities will continue to diminish and we'll see the growth of many smaller population areas of a few hundred thousand--enough people to provide the services and create a decent culture. My wife and I moved from San Diego during the pandemic and bought a home about 1 hr from DC where we could have plenty of space, peace, and quiet. I work remotely (on this channel), and she commutes into the office via train 1 day a week, then works from home the rest of the time. We love this lifestyle and I suspect it will catch on more and more in the coming years. When we crave some city time it's a quick hour drive or train ride away. Totally agree the places that wisely lay well-planned transportation networks will be well-positioned. Also, parks and recreation opportunities are huge (as London demonstrated in this video). Hopefully we in the USA get our act together with High-Speed Rail--China is proving its tremendous benefits. However, I'll be happy riding in a (safe) electric driverless car so I can do other things instead of driving!

@@TDC_TheDocumentaryChannel Thats my point. I currently live in Madrid downtown with my girlfriend and we dont want to live in our rented small apartment in a very dense neighborhood for more than a year. Im also currently working remotely (my company is base in Madrid but didnt have an office) My girlfriend can work remotely too. So we dont see any long term need to live in a dense place, our plans are moving to the suburbs and rent an apartment that have big green areas, pool, gym, a place to have a nice terrace to enjoy the spanish sun, etc... 90% of the houses currently on construction in Madrid or other spanish cities share that, either they are single family homes, rowhouses or building with 5/6 stories but with private gardens, big terraces and many block amenities. I dont see young people (people in their mid 20s till mid 30s) with a desire of living in a high dense zone when they have that alternatives. Or even move to smaller cities where queality of life is higher and live is cheaper.

@@TDC_TheDocumentaryChannel Will do. I think construction patterns are becoming more and more standardized everywhere on the planet. At the end of the day, building suburbia or 50 floors tall residential towers dont create communities. Lower buildings but in walkable communities creates the perfect mix between nature, human activity and space for socialise with other people and create communities. And again, thanks a lot for the content you make TDC 😉
