Fan Bridge in London, famous bridge to visit in Paddington, in London. Let's travel to the city of London and let's visit the Merchant Square Footbridge (also known as The Fan Bridge) which is a moveable pedestrian bridge spanning a canal in Paddington, at the Paddington Basin in London. The Fan Bridge is architecturally and mechanically unique, being composed of five side-by side sections of varying lengths, with offset pivots to accommodate the varying lengths. When opened, the segments are brought to varying angles of elevation. The visual effect of the Fan Bridge when opened has been likened to that of a Japanese fan.
The deck of the Fan Bridge is made of five beams, which came to Paddington by barge. The beams each open in sequence, with the first rising to an angle of 80 degrees; the four rising to lower levels.
British firm Knight Architects and structural engineers AKT II have completed the moving footbridge, called Fan Bridge, in Paddington, London, that opens and closes like the blades of a traditional hand-held fan.
Those wishing to see the Fan bridge in motion will need to time their visits carefully. The Fan bridge is located near the very end of Paddington Basin with only permanently moored business barges beyond it, so it is not expected that the structure will need to accommodate through marine traffic. However, the Canal & River Trust stipulate that bridges in the area don’t obstruct vessel navigation which is why it is necessary that the bridge can be raised. It opens at noon on Friday each week, and on special occasions, by members of the Merchant Square management team.
