@paulthomas8262
@paulthomas8262 6 жыл бұрын
With actual tunnel you tend to have single rail tracks in one direction. NY metro is mostly dig an cover so they have spare lines for maintenance.
@peabody1976
@peabody1976 6 жыл бұрын
It was a matter of train signalling, train control, and maintenance scheduling why it took so long. It has nothing to do with number of tracks. NYC MTA has quadruple tracks only on certain lines, and dual tracks on others, but the entire system is 24/7. London has only dual tracks on its Underground. The lines that are Night Tube are also deep-tunnel lines. Its "cut and cover" subsurface lines won't be ready for any Night Tube service until they work out train signalling and track upgrades, probably another three-four years.
@sonicboy678
@sonicboy678 6 жыл бұрын
I should mention that some have three tracks, and the middle may be used for express service in one direction or short-turn service, though there are few instances of the actual use of that track. Oddly, an independent group proposed ending all night service for a number of years to fix the problems, even though full night closures isn't anywhere close to an adequate solution.

They had a similar trial in Melbourne a few years ago, with trains on every line and trams on the busier routes all night on Saturdays and Sundays. It was so successful, it was quickly made permanent. My No. 96 tram route is busy all night and there are times when I have had to stand at 4.00 am. I'm amazed all big cities don't do this.

Then Copenhagen has a nice Public Transport System. In Germany, Duesseldorf in Similiar Citicens size compared to Copenhagen its sometimes hard to get a bus/tram/"underground"(U-Bahn) or even a normal Train between 0:00 until 4:00. A lot of lines dont get service at night(mainly Bus lanes, and all Tram Lines.). At this Time the Lines who are Running are nearly empty and also only have 30min or a 1hour cycle .

philippe Lebel Heathrow has a cerfew, but Luton, Gatwick and Stansted are all connected to the night tube network via National Rail and probably cater to the more price conscious market already and improved access to central London could see more appealing 'red eye' flights coming in. Just thinking out loud of course, but it seems to me this is capacity that people will use and flights might be one of the early things to capitalise.

Judging by how busy the night buses are at Trafalgar square I always thought there was a good market for night tube, the reduced frequency also probably makes it feel busier than it really is. The cheaper flights are often at more anti social hours, and some of the low cost is negated by the need for a taxi - I can see how this is helpful for airport travelers.

Londonist Ltd, There is no single worst disruptive passenger I could identify. I've had a large fight, more vomit than I've ever seen but it's noted that we have many sleeping passengers. Not just sleeping through alcohol but using the system as a bed for the night. Often taking trains out of service to a depot we can have a lot of issues with these passengers as they don't want to leave the train. I have had one gentleman sat in a carriage, pants down whom thought he was sat on his toilet.. I really felt for the cleaning crew that night!

Geoff, did you notice any change in the age profile of the passengers as the night progressed? I ask because here in Preston the night busses definitely show a significant trend. I am only slightly older than yourself and at midnight on the bus that runs past my home I am often the youngest passenger. Everyone crowds in downstairs, whilst upstairs is little used. By 4 am I am usually the oldest and the only person travelling on the lower deck, apart from the driver. Any similar trends in London.

It all goes to prove what a 24 hour society we’ve become, I’m glad I live in a rural area as I couldn’t stand it being so busy here, Good luck with all that London rather there than here.

I live on the orbits of London where there is no tube but GTR does run a 24/7 train service (even if it is not known as the world's most reliable). Some buses also run 24/7. This is something one takes for granted and makes the area more attractive to live in.

I can tell you what I use the night tube for. I'm a musician and often do gigs all over the country that involve getting a lift back to London with the band late at night any time between 2am and 5am. I then use the night tube to get home.

Tokyo has (I think) the biggest train network in the world and is yet to have a night service which is really annoying as taxis are about as expensive as London taxis. Every night I venture out from my home area, I have to keep checking my watch for the last train, which is always packed and seems a prime time for people to jump in front of them!

There are some 24/7 bus and train services operating in and around London but it's impossible for the Underground because it's a two-track system which needs to close for maintenance at some time.
