I don't think people realize how important and how it changed the whole country of Austria when Conchita won. Austria is a very very conservative country and Conchita was everywhere when she won. It really changed the minds of many people.

I am from Austria and I would say you are partly right. Before 2014, I felt comfortable and safe as an openly gay man. The majority supported LGBTQ+ individuals, but it was primarily the ÖVP who always voted against equality. However, the progress regarding protection laws and same-sex marriage are really important and they came after Conchita‘s win. I remember many right-wing minded people got upset and they went very silent after conchita won the contest.

Conchita taught me without knowing it, how I was limiting myself, through my internalized homophobia etc. I would have never been exposed to your amazing voice, your incredible songs and you. Just a beautiful soul, wonderful humour. Where I felt uncomfortable about your beard and unusual appearance, I'm so grateful that your music inspired me to know about you. What I discovered is a person much younger than who inspired me to write this, hopefully you read this someday. I'm so happy to see young people like you, as you're actions will create such an amazing change. I'm also very sad that I was never privileged enough to have someone like you to understand I've been hiding, for decades. You chose life, while I was scared. You are incredible

She is a he. Conchita Wurst is Thomas Neuwirth in drag. Thomas is not transgender, nor is he transvestite, he's a drag queen Conchita Wurst is a character, not an identity. Perhaps character is the wrong word, way of life is probably better.

As Tom / Conchita mentioned in the interview, Conchita Wurst is an artificial persona, he actualy chose the stage name Conchita Wurst as meaning „lady with a sausage“! Eurovision was an important stage in his life where he used the opportunity to make a statement.

it is not any "with a sausage" at all ! you make a mistake, Conchita choose Wurst which means sausage from the german expression : "das ist mir wurst" which mean : "no matter what" or "all the same" and most people misunderstood her so she actually dropped the word "Wurst".

My guess is that anyone from the outside looking at her would be taken aback and question the reasoning and method. After seeing how comfortable and glamorous Conchita is you really know all you need to know. She is who she is, and she is going to live her life in a way that tells her story and makes her happy.
