Ash being Persian you have an understanding of the importance of what it means when someone is your guest. I learned in the few weeks I spent in Iran what real hospitality is, and that when a family takes you in as a guest it means much more than it does in the west. I also learned why all the other middle eastern people warn you not to party with Persians lol.

@@justtrustash Lone Survivor is a great film and probably Director Peter Berg's best. He has worked with Mark Wahlberg on 5 films including: Spenser Confidential, Mile 22, Patriots Day, and Deep Water Horizon. Another great Berg movie in the middle east is The Kingdom with Jamie Foxx, which is such an awesome action film that I highly recommend.

@@justtrustashLOL between the singing the food and dancing never seeming to end and how amazing the hospitality and friendliness of the people it was shocking. The host family who I was a guest of their eldest son had gotten married the day after I got there. WOW was an amazing two weeks.

When Marcus Latrell came back from the war, some people broke onto his property and killed his dog. He got in his truck and chased after them and was on the phone with the police the whole time. The full 911 call is on KZfaq, and that incident and Marcus directly inspired the John Wick character

I wouldn't bother calling the police if someone killed my dog, especially if I am an ex military solider who's been through hell. I would deal with them personally.

Marcus has stayed in contact with the man who saved him has even had him to the us to his family home. There is a great 60 minute’s interview with Marcus and the man who saved him. It’s amazing

Only for a short time. Also most of the "heroic" story has been debunked. Quiet sad, but they just fucked up from the beginning and Marcus Luttrell sugar coated it. Which was one of the reasons his Afghan savior distanced himself later from Luttrell.

I'm a grown ass man, and a 100% disabled veteran, and I freely admit that Marcus Lutrell is my hero. My spine injuries are similar to his, and if he can crawl miles across that mountain in that condition then I can get my sorry ass out of the recliner and at least do some menial housework.

Fun fact: At the beginning of the movie after we see their little sprint, you'll see a bunch of guys around a table. The one guy with sunglasses and a black beanie, is in fact the real Marcus Lutrell. Also, Lieutenant Michael P. "Murph" Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor. There's a workout based on what he did called the Murphy challenge, which is really intense and not to mention USS Michael Murphy (DDG-112), the 62nd ship of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, named in his honor.

I’ve read before that Axel’s dad only agreed to the film if they showed what actually happened to his son. All the wounds he received, even the headshot he initially survived, were documented on his autopsy.

@@Gutslingernot true. Marcus and Axe were separated, so on Marcus' debrief he was able to give locations of Murphy and Dietz's bodies, but not Axe... It took them a while to locate his remains.

@@ryjawa you’re right, Axe was separated and took quite a while to find his body, I can’t remember the exact days, but I remember when I read the book, I was wondering if the body would decomposed after that period of time (sorry for my strange thoughts)

Beautiful story and loved your reaction to it.. Marcus is a gentle giant who still lives in Texas on a ranch taking care of his mom and family. He has tried for years to get the man who saved him to move to America with his family (Marcus wanted to pay for everything), but the man won’t leave his village and the people he loves. It’s truly one of the greatest stories of my lifetime. Thank you for sharing

My dad was an Night Stalker MH-47 Chinook pilot in Afghanistan, asleep but on call when this occurred. Due to a number of factors, he was fortunately not piloting the Chinook that was shot down with the RPG, though circumstantially he very well could have been. We lost many good husbands and fathers in that Chinook, people who looked after me as if they were my family, and the mourning period for them was a heavy part of my childhood. Nothing compared to the fraternal relationships my dad lost, of course. The next few days, my dad was working with the other pilots in the Unit working to deal with the aftermath of the situation. RIP Corey Goodnature, Chris Scherkenbach, and the others who gave their lives attempting that rescue. NSDQ.

It's devastating how them making that moral choice with the kid, the angry teenager, and the old man on that mountainside led to all of the events after. Making the right moral choice indirectly led to a devastating result. This movie is so damn good. Congrats on 100k subs Ash (and Hannah!). I'll be here for 200k.

@@11BscoutNG in the movie yes. Alot of accounts I’ve read claims they stumbled upon them as they were still debating the decision and held back to follow them. In the article I posted Gulab says not just the Taliban but all the villagers heard or saw the helicopter drop them off that night. They were already being tracked. That supposedly.. that’s what happened a lot In Afghanistan. Despite what movies will have you believe we don’t have “super soldiers”. It’s a really interesting read from a different perspective.

Marcus told the director that made Lone Survivor. That if he fucked it up and dishonored his friends. He would kill him. You can find Marcus Luttrell speaking about "The worst day of his life" here on YT. The events went on longer than they could portray in the film. Marcus is a good speaker. He does a great job covering the details of this moment in time for him and his best friends. Worth a listen

I watched this movie in the theater right before my deployment to Afghanistan. I was with another Soldier and we were in uniform (didn’t have time to change in order to make it). By the end of the movie, especially after the pictures of the deceased, nearly everyone in the theater was crying. My buddy and I left immediately so we could avoid any awkward reactions/interactions with the theater audience. Such a sad movie.

the part where murphy sacrifices himself to call in backup really happened and he was awarded the medal of honor for his actions(highest possible military decoration for anyone that didn't know)

The ending always gets me, i was in afghan at the same time this took place. I was in my mid 20s then, seeing the ages of those guys at the time and what they went through. Am 40 now, makes me sad thinking what they would be doing now.

Luttrell and I share the same general surgeon. I was in a bad accident with an explosive back in 2015. Months into my recovery, I was able to meet Luttrell. Not only a humbling experience, but a testimony to how much pain we can face in life and still bounce back. Like Luttrell said, "Never out of the fight."

So glad y'all appreciated this for what it really is. Such a powerful film. I'd argue that this and American Sniper hit me the hardest. Latrell has given many speeches on this that I recommend listening to, but this is a good depiction of Operation Redwings that honored the men without glamorizing anything. I remember a lot of people didn't like that the firefight took up so much of the runtime, but the real battle was longer. The Murph Challenge is based on Mike Murphy and it's well-worth trying every year. Congratulations on 100k!

This one always gets me. Sometime after this movie came out, the taliban released the actual footage 😢 the gun fights were insanely loud!!! All the sounds of the shots reverberating off the rocks n shit. I couldn’t believe how loud it was up on that mountain. But the chilling part is (I’ll never forget this) 😥 You can actually hear Mike Murphy screaming in extreme desperation for Marcus right before they killed him 😭😭😭😭 I’ll never forget that scream. RIP warriors.

It's always a pleasure and a good time watching y'all react and banter with each other haha. and man, I can't even think to imagine what these guys went through. It's just crazy to even watch the movie, let alone going through it...I have nothing but respect for the men and women who serve. And the man and his village that helped Marcus, I mean, what kindness must you possess to do this. This is the kind of culture, tradition, and respect I want to learn from. @@blackwolf4653 It's not over the top at all. It's exactly what it was supposed to be. Marcus Luttrell threatened to kill the people making the movie if they messed it up. He described it to them exactly as he remembered and made sure they did the same.

Also the tricky part about the herders is that those goats travel that path everyday they are gonna go up and down regardless if the herders are with them or not. So if they brought the herders with them whilst extracting and 50 goats go back down the trail by themselves the taliban will know something is going on

The falling scene actually happened like that. Marcus said it was such a bad fall that after the first one they refused to do it unless they were shot again. Every time they fell everyone broke bones.

Although its meant to be slightly exaggerated, the message in the story is what makes it powerful. Ive done 2 tours of afghan with the british army and it was hectic, there where a few that where willing to help but most were too scared, and you can't blame them. The biggest problem was not knowing who was fighting and who were civilians

When I was a new Army officer, we had discussions in training about this incident and the moral question regarding what to do with the goat herders. The whole mission was a popular thing to study/read.

@@TWteedoubleu Not to armchair quarterback but he could have sent two guys to the mountain top to establish comms while the other two watched the prisoners (once a GOTWA was given of course). Once comms were up call for extract, once the helo was 5 min out cut the prisoners loose (or flexcuff all their ankles together to slow them down) and then run like hell for the LZ. Once again hindsight is always 20/20. RANGERS LEAD THE WAY!!!

@just cause that sounds good until you take into account the fact that they were in hostile territory with what appeared to be limited Intel and no coms. Splitting up like that represented a huge risk. Personally I believe the herders should've met an unfortunate death. There was no way any other option would've worked. Regardless, as you said, hindsight IS 20/20. Securing the ankles wouldn't have been much of an option, given that they didn't know if comms would actually be up once they summited the mountain. It's a crappy scenario to deal with either way.

Actually that isn’t true. He has had several disagreements with Marcus over money😢. He returned and they don’t speak. That doesn’t make many people happy but money has a way of doing just that. The root of all evil.

My Son was in Iraq and Afghanistan a total of 4 times every time he came home a little piece of him was gone his last deployment was very difficult we met him at the airport he didn't speak more than 4 words to us in the 24 hrs and I found him sleeping on the floor the first night that was many years ago he's doing better but I still look at him sad that he will never be the same as before...

I remember when this happened, it was pretty heartbreaking. Especially hard hitting was Danny Deitz as he was from the Denver area. Have a fairly big road named after him here, and each time I drive it... sigh. Can only imagine how hard it is for his family and friends. Another great review! That's a tough one. I finally got around to reading the book on my last deployment to Afghanistan in 2012. It's a little more graphic but at least you can just look away to pause. The ending gets me every time too.

Marcus did everything to bring Gulab and his family into the US. Here in the US, we have an organization that helps our counterpart allies, that's why some ex-spec ops went back to Afghanistan during the Kabul airport evact to evacuate brothers who fought along side them. During rememberance day we also remember our allies who went down alongside US forces. God pray for their family

I watched this movie when it first came out . I later had a friend ask me if I had ever seen it I told him no because I really didn't want to relive what I had watched because he would have been talking about certain scenes. After Desert Storm I've had a few issues and I sometimes can handle it and sometimes not . I went to the movie theater to watch American Sniper and could smell the sand during the sand storm scenes. I asked my wife " do you smell that ? " which she didn't...like I said sometimes I have issues

The part about the locals knowing the terrain of the mountains is SO TRUE. American Soldiers wearing 60+ pounds of gear, carrying really heavy weapons, and ammunition…opposed to locals wearing what amounts to a free flowing and loose sheet that allows you to run like a naked track star pretty much. On top of the fact that they know every hill and hollow like the back of their hand. It’s absolutely insane how fast they can maneuver through some of most extreme mountains in the world like it’s nothing. That area is part of the greater lower Himalayan mountains/ the Hindu Kush mountains, which are literally some of the most steeply graded peaks and highest elevations in the fucking world. Literally starting to get to the elevations where oxygen starts getting thinner and if you aren’t used to it, you will pass out from oxygen deprivation simply by putting yourself through mid range stress situations.

I have watched this reaction video at least 5 times and it touches my heart to see you guys truly capture the heart of the movie. Both of my brothers are Marines and one passed away at the age of 18, so I know the sacrifices our military(veterans) make and it makes me happy to see people react the way you both did. It truly was but they might not have been able to legally they didn’t say. Plus it ended up being a false summit. They woulda had time if it was the peak is prob what they were thinking.

There is probably a tactical reason why that wasn't a good idea. For example, four men moving through terrain like that with three hostages is hard enough. But at least three of them would have their attention inwards rather than outwards. They didn't have the numbers to scout ahead, maintain a watch to the rear and sides, and maintain security of three prisoners.

Your reactions to this move were fantastic. The villagers who took Markus in were AMAZING. (They risked their lives for a man they brought into their care.) I play golf with a career Naval Seal who was friends with one of the seal team who died on this mission. The Naval Seals are a breed apart. Ash - It did my heart good to see how proud you were of the man and the boy who saved Markus. (What a great role model for what it means to live with caring values.)

You guys need to really watch Marcus talk about this event. He breaks everything down and everything. Even if you don’t react to it, just watch it with your gf and listen to how he recalls the events. It’s amazing. Gulag the guy who saved him still comes and visits Marcus on his ranch.

My brother was in Iraq and Afganistan during the war. Every once in a while one of us family would get a sat phone call from him (they would pass it from person to person to call home). We knew where he was, and he had some very close calls w/ IED's, skirmishes, ambushes and suicide strikes. All of us family never watched the news b/c it stressed us out incredibly wondering if he was "in the news". He came back home safe but w/ bad PTSD. On a side note, this movie was filmed in the Sandia Mountains in Albuquerque, NM where i live and hike constantly.

This movie alone makes me SO fucking grateful for every single soldier that does this type of stuff DAILY so we can watch "reaction videos" on KZfaq. Idk how people can truly hate our soldiers, it breaks my heart.. for both sides of every war. We're basically all just humans, forced to fight another man's fight who stays behind closed doors and has no care or love for civilians.

First off, love your channel and you both are awesome. There's a biography by Richard marcinko who went through udt training and later seals. It's a great read and gives insight on how these men are built. It's titled "Rogue Warrior" . His 10 commandments of specwar are good ways to follow. In my opinion. A beautiful man, Marcus. Look for his speeches, here! For True story movies, I put this up with, 13 hours, 1917, Dunkirk, Hacksaw Ridge, Once we were Soldiers, Blackhawk Down. Listen to his story about this, it's actually more graphic and horrifying!

Yeah, this one hits different. Served from 08-12. In training you learn to hate your enemy. When fighting, you learn to respect your enemy. If I'm lucky enough to reach old age maybe I'll learn to forgive them.

That is my issue with war movies, they can very easily glorify and over-embellish the events. That's why this movie is one of not my favourites.

Along with Black Hawk Down I think this one is an absolute fantastic war movie. Say what you will about Mark Whalberg but he had a very good performance with this one. Btw I'd recommend Shooter (I think from 2007). Its a really good film. Edit: I use to watch Hell Week (don't know it's still ongoing on tv). It was amazing seeing how the Navy SEALS train.

Not only was this movie not exaggerated, they underplayed the reality of it so it became even more believable. Luttrells rescue is a movie in itself

Yes a false summit is exactly what it sounds like, when you are going up a mountain and there is a large flat area on top that looks like the summit from the bottom of the slope, but when you get to the crest you see it actually extends flat for a bit and then keeps sloping upward. Usually you can’t see the second part on top till you get close enough. It can be very disheartening especially when you’re very tired or someone misread a map, or in this case you’re being chased by men with guns. Glad you guys kept that long silence after it finished. It was heavy watching you two in that moment. Great upload as always

Tell that all those Afghan locals, who helped the US and their allies for over a decade and then were discarded by them for the Taliban to kill them as collaborators... Good luck finding local support in the next country that your country invades and occupies...
