Do you want to immigrate to the USA, Canada, and other Western Countries? Are you prepared for a lonely life in these countries?

You are so spot on about American life; it tends to breed loneliness and depression. In 2021 I moved from the US to Mexico because I yearned to see and be with people more. Americans live lives of quiet desperation because we tend to prioritize "succeeding" and making money above all else--family, friends, health, happiness, fun, sleep, companionship, even love. We get so busy trying to make a living...that we forget to live.

Historically, my family tended to be pioneers wherever they went. My ancestors tended to live on the edges of the wilderness away from people. They were the early settlers of small towns in early US history. Each time, other people followed and settled near my ancestors and my ancestors would once again leave for other open empty territory. Even today, we prefer the solitude way of living. My brother is considered the oddball of the family because he actually likes being around other people and lives within a large city. The rest of my family prefers to live in the quiet suburbs or on rural farms. To outsiders, our way of life is lonely, but to us, it is enjoyable, peaceful, and a free way to live unbound by societal expectations and obligations. The only unfortunate thing for us is that there aren't any open empty territories left to leave to.

I lived in Canada for 15 years and this rang true more & more as the years went on, I would never order food online as I needed an excuse to leave the house. At 49 I found myself pondering what to do with my life, I went on vacation to Thailand and the first thing that struck me was the openness and friendliness of the place. People sit in the front of their house with the doors open and everybody is welcome to say hi, of course there are exceptions. I now live in Thailand with my new wife in a small village, our doors are never locked, family comes, neighbours come, kids play, everybody is welcome anytime. Such a better way to live. Happy new year 'Songkran' from Thailand

Great video. My first cultural shock in the US was when someone called the police 👮‍♀️ on me for sitting in front of a staircase in an apartment complex. They almost charged me criminally for trespassing!!! Coming from 🇬🇭 Ghana, where we co-live and co-share and co-relate, I was 😳 shocked. Human beings are social beings. Our innate nature is to inter-depend on others. Once that contract is broken, society won’t be be the same. Most kids in the US are raised indoors and this has serious effects on them growing up. They become anti-social, less empathetic and depressed. Another factor worth considering is the abundance of ☀️ Sunlight. Yes the sun we sometimes complain about in Africa provides vitamin D which helps your serotonin (happiness gland). So it gets worse when you have less sunshine in US and stay indoors.

As an American over 50, I remember being able to play out in the street when I was a kid, but because of the rising crime and evil in this country, everyone fears going out of their house. I always wonder why foreigners want to come to the US. It’s horrible here. A lot of Americans are looking to leave their home country. If you want a house and good money, you will be an underpaid slave to your job, and you will have to keep working harder and harder just to maintain what you have. I live completely alone now. No friends and no family. So, I keep dreaming of escaping this hellhole they call the American dream. They can have it, cause I’m done.

The impromptu play dates, relatives and friends dropping in, the casual conversations with the milkman, newspaper guy, the screaming noise when the kids are getting out of school, friends volunteering to take your kids for a weekend getaway… these little people connections are so important. Actually we are very happy. We like to live with a lot of space around us and a yard for our dogs. We like quiet , peaceful streets. We like just being with our immediate family. The idea of having to socialize with people constantly seems very stressful to me. We do go to parks and go camping in the summer, then go home to our lovely quiet, private houses. Maybe people whose ancestors lived in cold climates adapted to this because it is too cold to sit outside most of the time. If this lifestyle doesn't suit you then don't move to places like this.

I am Australian and I agree. It wasn’t always like this though and in rural Australia life is very different. People do have a lot of social connections there. There is disconnection all over the Western world. Remember though you are looking at the new world, not ancient cultures that are thousands of years old. I do like the way Africans talk to everyone and I am happy talking to them as I like that type of behaviour. P.S. I live inner Sydney - and walk most everywhere - and daily interact with neighbours who visit us, or on the street - it's a community. I grew up in a small country town of maybe 10,000 people - but lived 100m from the centre of town, so it was always active during the day. Maybe not so much at night. A few years ago on a family history trip we went back and stayed overnight in my old home town. Firstly for dinner the only restaurant in town was next door - and we waited some time in the empty restaurant before someone appeared 'oh - a customer' - afterwards we went for a stroll around the central town blocks and main street - they were entirely deserted - except we passed one couple walking - both rolling drunk - so that was not the most satisfying social interaction.

I am subscribing right away. I am so glad I FINALLY found a channel that takes on the enormous issue of loneliness in Western countries, especially the US. I've seen sooooooo many people ending up with deep depression due to the lonely lifestyle they have to endure, even though when they first move to the US/Canada/Ausralia/Northern European countries, they were thinking: "Oh .... I''ve got this. I can do this". Not so easy. As for me, pictures of US neighborhoods immediately get me down but I used to think it was just me. Though I would add this: OH YES! you can readjust to life in Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, Latin America, and all non-Western countries. But you are right: you have to be seriously prepared to be able to go back and live your best life elsewhere, because you would have gotten used ..... not only to the comfort you have in the US, but also to having your space to yourself. Still: my experience is that most immigrants to the US really, really, really want to go back to their native country some day.

@@oladapokomolafe1695 Hello. Just wanted to let you know that Jesus loves you very much. He is coming back very soon and He wants you to be ready. Just go to Him as you are. You don’t have to be perfect. The only thing He requires is a full surrender of your life. Go to Him and give Him your life and everything. Once you surrender everything (from the heart). He will give you The Holy Spirit in His fullness. The Holy Spirit will then give you faith, the power to overcome sin, peace, fulfillment and above all, eternal life. You cannot do it on your own strength. It’s only by the Holy Spirit. And you get The Holy Spirit once you lay everything down, including your life at The Lord’s feet. He says in His Word “Not by might, not by power but by my Spirit”. People think Christianity is boring. That’s because they see it as a religion. Christianity is not a religion, but a personal relationship with Jesus Christ who loves you and gave Himself for you. Having a relationship with Christ is the most joyful fulfilling thing you can ever have. Jesus changed my life and He wants to change yours as well. I'm so glad to finally see people talking about this issue. I'm originally from Africa, but I was raised in the US, so spent most of my life in the country (35+ yrs). And, I felt this deep loneliness even as a child. I would cry whenever we went back home to visit and it was time to go back to the US, and I would be really depressed for quite a while after getting back to the US. I never felt that life was normal, and everytime we met a new immigrant, I remember thinking to myself, even as a child or teenager that they just don't know the trap they are getting themselves into. Kudos to you for speaking up about this.

In spite of living in poorer countries, they have much less issues with loneliness, suicide and depression!!! Also, Africans tend to be much less indebted than North Americans as their banks do not have this stupid credit score system that out too much pressure on people!!! I know that as I live in Canada and the credit system just is a piece of crap… une vraie merde!

Carefully consider this if you are moving here from a native African culture and life-style. One of the things he did not mention is Time. Your sense of time will be warped and accelerated. As you merge with this culture, you will have little time for family, friends, parties, rituals, and even yourself. The "need" to make money will consume you. And when you are young and healthly, you probably belong to a structure like a university, for exemple. Or you have a very busy career. As a Hispanic, I can tell you that it's true that we are alike Asians and Africans, even though we are in the same hemisphere as Westerners. I think it has to do with the Iberian mentality mixed with the indigenous one (both focused on the collective), but also with the fact that we are not rich societies like the Anglo-Saxon or European ones and that's what has allowed us to maintain our way of being because believe me that even here in my country I have heard people say that things are not like they used to be because people are focused more on producing than on living and they no longer share as before, which means that perhaps the excess of money generates certain seclusion or isolation in themselves.

I was born and raised in America, and only two of my great-grandparents were immigrants from Sicily, the rest were also born in America. I agree 100% with what this video says. I've spent time in SE Asia and I have to say, I look at things there than look back at the USA. Sure, we have the economy, the infrastructure, the educations (which isn't great, but generally better than most public schools in places like Cambodia and Vietnam) and healthcare (far from perfect, but Obamacare did make that a lot cheaper for most) and better air quality than a lot of the big cities over there. But when it comes to overall quality of live for a real, functional human being, SE Asia has America beat. I'm working on being able to work remotely and I'm moving to either Cambodia or Thailand and there is a good chance I will start a family there. And honestly, I would rather raise kids over there than in the US. As long as they have private schools and I'm not living in the middle of the most polluted part of town, they would have a better life there than in the US. I'd rather my kids grow up going down to the local market, saying hello to the vendors, and chatting with the other kids instead of having them just pick up the Amazon Fresh delivery, dropped of by some random person who doesn't even make eye-contact if you do see them, and take it from the curb to the front door. I'd rather them run around screaming outside with the other kids after school than send them on "play dates" that have to be scheduled with an app. And I'd rather they grow up eating pork and rice and good, clean food instead of whatever the heck is in a Lunchable. Up until about the mid 80s, America was a much more livable place. But since then, America has gone from being a place of neighbors as friends to being a place of Facebook "friends". It has gone from asking Vince down at the market what's good to being about ordering food with an App. And for kids, it has gone from having a childhood to having a few years before adulthood. This place has passed its peak, and everyone knows it.

Even financially wise, half of the USA population is so poor working for pocket change. Nothing left in the end of month. Everything is dark, soulless and tasteless. This is damned land. There is no life. Just work sleep and paying bills. There is no outdoor life. Even people you know you get chance to see them every 3 weeks. Everybody lives spread out from each other and work different jobs, different days and shifts. It's impossible to make friends. It's impossible to get normal girlfriend or any girlfriend. No human connection. No passion, no enjoy. Neighbors don't even talk to neighbors. Just emotional pain, loneliness and depression that can lead to SERIOUS psychological issues and consequences. While experiencing all this I actually thought something was wrong with me, like feeling of being under black magic attack, that's how serious it feels. I always wanted to live here and to see people from all over the world and hang out with them. However people here share same mentality, they are very reserved and alienated from each other. Nobody cares about each other here. People are also very close minded and hang out in their own groups like in prison, whites with whites, blacks with blacks and so on... People here don't realize they became androids and modern slaves. They put money first and left behind family, friends and love. This video seems to really capture the reality of a typical America and the narration really crystalizes it. Even though it depicts a less urban setting, the same stillness can be found in cities and suburbs. It’s not what you see on Netflix or in Hollywood where there’s a story to be told and you do see a lot of human interaction from scene to scene. In real life America so many lead an isolated life indoors except for when one has to go to work or school. One explanation for this, however, is that community in America and many societies is not geographically determined. It’s structured around work, school, church, one’s immediate family if there is anyone and other kinds of civic associations. Loneliness really comes in when one does not belong to any of these “communities”. One’s geographical community (in a society like America’s) simply does not or cannot provide a sense of belonging. It provides physical and material comforts but not emotional or social sustenance, which has to come from those other types of associations. And I sense this is not just a Western world phenomenon. I think it’s happening everywhere and simply a fact of life wherever the vast majority of people living in any space have no family ties with one another. In a village or neighborhood setting in a place like India or Africa, you’ll have such liveliness on the streets and among neighbors because a lot of the people there are simply relatives of each other.

It is a sad reality and can only imagine how shocking and sad it is to overseas cultures that immigrate or visit here. We do not even know our neighbour's first name. It was a fast evolution from never feeling alone in your community, to feeling alone every where. Great Video.

I am born in America in the suburbs north of Boston.Your words are so correct. I am now 74, and my childhood was idyllic, playing outside every day, roller skating, bike riding, climbing trees and long walks with my girlfriends. Sadly, due to the scourge of the drug trade and gun violence all communities everywhere have been adversely affected. Parents are fearful of letting their kids play outside. I have lived in Egypt for 20. years with returning to the states every summer for 3months I became to realize the problem. Then I returned to Florida USA for 8 years to work. The difference was huge from the friendly Egypt. Definitely, isolation is the norm now in the states, and it is impossible for someone to adjust who is from Africa and be happy. Thank you for clearly warning of the culture clash...it is real. The only option for an African is to live in the big cities like N.Y.. Miami, Chicago, but it is so tough to raise children there due to the gangs. This Ramadan, I pray hard that Allah will change things. But Quran says Allah does not change the condition of the people unless they change what is in themselves.

This is SO true!!! I am American but have lived overseas in the UK and Europe. I can’t believe the difference. Living in America is so lonely! It’s isolating. It’s very sad. It didn’t used to be this way in the 40s, 50s, 60s 70s. This is a new phenomenon. Without w church family (and I’m not religious) you are literally on your own - and that’s as an American! I can’t believe what it would be like being a refugee or an immigrant. Depression is high and largely due to isolation.

@@Thesali55 Hello. I've grown up in suburbs all my life, when I was a kid I would play outside with other children, but I do not see this happening now with the children of this day. I too now spend almost all of my time indoors, it has become increasingly easy to live like this. My neighbors are the same way, nobody knows each others names in the neighborhood. I am very grateful for the immense comfort and privilege that my background has provided for me, but you come to realize that American culture is gross and inhuman, materialistic and plastic, very lonely. I long to see the other ways of life on this planet when I have the means to travel In the last 15 years especially, the westerners (at least in North America) have all retreated to their caves, their eyes fixated on the shadows on the walls of the cave. Reality passes them by and they waste their life, the most they can hope for to ease the loneliness is a friendship over Discord (but in the end this only contributes to them spending more time indoors). North Americans are moving towards a never ending stream of escapism through consumerism. First it was TV, then video games, next is virtual reality. They will be enveloped in a 24/7 stream of hyperreality, forever overstimulated and oblivious to the real world.

Here you will lose your identity, your roots, your life , to become maybe more financially stable. I love America, with all my heart, but I realize it is a totally different world. It is designed to work, work, work, and forget about family, friends, relationships. We will get more toys, more things, and more order and organization, less open corruption, but will also have to settle for less life in community, settle for materialism and individualism. Settle for a lifeless life. Loneliness is a very high price for a better car, or bigger house or opportunities. And still...I.love America. Part of this is because in the developed world people have small families and work long hours to pay for all the stuff they have. They don't need or want to give and take or have a relationship with their neighbors. In alot of ways it is a very self focused way of life here.😥

I don’t know if it’s completely self-focused. I can tell you that my parents are from a 3rd world country & yes people interact all the time but why? It’s not only bc they are communal but also bc some do not have work bc there are no jobs or some work very few hours so they have a ton of free time to socialize yet they dream of being able to have work so everyone in their family can eat and have clothes. I work a lot & I am exhausted especially as a mom of two kids that are homeschooled by me. My husband and I are so tired most days but so thankful that we can have food on the table, a roof over our heads, & are able to enjoy the evenings and weekends as a family. We see friends but not all the time bc sometimes we want to just enjoy each other & there’s nothing wrong with that. Another thing is that in other countries the focus is more about reputation and having friends than spending time with the family members within your own home which is also very important. Parents are busy chatting to other parents while kids play all the time & only see their parents during meals. Makes me think of a pet. The pet interacts with the owner for meals, & other necessities. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I guess I’ve lived both sides since my parents are immigrants and I’m also American.

This really comes down to introvert versus extrovert personality types. Most Western countries are great for introverts who need their space to function at their best potential. If you are a Type-A extrovert, a social animal who thrives among multitudes of people, then you'll just have to work harder to establish your circle of friends and you might be miserable if you're not able to do that. I live in the United States and I love being not bothered by anybody. No complaints at all. No marks for guessing my personality type of course.

This is the exact mindset and so called scientific aspect of studies that’s detrimental to humanity as a whole. Introvert, extrovert, ambivert, alll these verts are detrimental to our connection as a community because the person began to embody so much of what they believe to be instead of making effort to connect with others outside of the studies they’ve been given for a personality type. I’m currently in the US, that was a culture shock, it has gotten worst as time goes on. I’m grieved by it! I lived in Turkey for 7 years then brought my wife back to the United States after COVID. Now that I know what I'm missing in this world I'm not very happy in America. No neighbors, no community, no social interactions, no interesting store-fronts. My wife is even more miserable. We have made 0 friends in nearly 2 years in America. I have spent more money on car maintenance than doing anything fun in life. Too bad these miserable anti-human cities will never change.

Representing Nairobi Kenya. I believe in travelling and experiencing different cultures around the world. But as for settling, these Western countries seem too cold and lonely for us and our way of life. We are very communal, we sit and walk outside a lot. Common Market places are an integral part. Our kids always come out to play with neighbors kids when not in school. I have lots of friends everywhere, our shopkeepers are our friends, gas station attendants, security guards, technicians, our workmates are all friends. I'd hate for my daughter to have no friends to play with and to just sit watching TV or on a computer all day every day. We find this very antisocial and bad for a child's development. Its is so sad and unfair but I guess its just the way life is there.

I'm an American myself and I plan on living in SE Asia and working remotely when I start my family. If they can have good private schools and good healthcare, both of which I could afford for them in SE Asia, why not? Take away education, healthcare, nutrition, stability, and a few other necessities, and what does the USA actually offer for a kid? In many ways the USA is a very unhealthy place to raise a family.

I am an immigrant from India. I have been in California for almost 8 yrs. I feel California is quite better in terms of socialization because of very mixed and vibrant communities . And yes strangers just randomly greet and talk to each other on the streets. In fact when I first came to USA, I was surprised to see people just randomly greet each other on the streets..which truly I have never seen back in India. In India we have been taught from childhood never to talk to strangers. And the reality is there are winds of change back home in India too. I am not talking abt the villages. They are completely different case. But even people living in small towns are now preferring privacy. And no.. its not because of foreign returnees. Even people living there for generations now don't want to socialize. Even in India now we have to request kids to go out and play..which to me is a very disturbing thing . All of them just want to sit at home and play games on their smartphones. In fact I find kids in USA prefer playing sports or other activities more than the kids back in India. It actually depends which part of the country u live in.... doesn't matter India or USA .

I am an Indian and I have lived in sweden for 4 years. It is more or less the same. I tried calling people for food but most of them never showed up or had no Interest. I am glad I left and return back to my country. Everything in moderation makes sense to me. If money is important then so is your culture, food and family that brings comfort to you. In the developing world, you will generally find people more friendly and welcoming. It is easy to get around with people. But not so in the west.

The stress and the pressure we live under is what weighs us down. We do not want to deal with other peoples problems. We have compassion fatigue. I can totally relate to the person who commented that it was not always this way- especially when we had more people who loved God and less fear about everything. When I was a child all the kids played together in groups- until dark and dinner time. People looked out for each other. Now, everyone is afraid to be taken advantage of because it happens so much. This is very sad. Lord, have mercy on us. We lost our way. The best thing to do is find a community of people to pray with and share your life with. Thank you for this video. We needed to hear this. Yes, where are the children? No one can afford them anymore.
