McMurty wrote a screenplay of Lonesome Dove before he wrote the novel. No one was interested in the screenplay so he turned it into a novel. I think that is a part of why the TV adaptation was one of the best ever done.

I recently read this on your recommendation and oh man i'm so glad i did. Usually i'm not a western guy. Not my thing, for the most part. This book though got under my skin the way few ever have, all the characters are amazing, some of the best I've read, Deets, Newt, Call, Gus, Clara are Lorena, they all feel so real. Going to be reading the others in the series very soon. If you ever do decide to write a western, i'll be first in line to buy it!

So I just started reading this yesterday and am only about 75pages in, but already I'm there. I was there in the first paragraph and the character interaction is just phenomenal. I have seen the mini series though it's been many years ago so it's hard for me not to picture TLJ, and Duvall, but I don't think that's a bad thing.

This is my single favorite book everrrr! I have heard of your work and want to read it and started watching your KZfaq because you talk about 80s fantasy and there are not enough Booktubers that review 80s fantasy and we both love Tad Williams , now I find out you loved lonesome dove; I really want to read your book now even more

I agree with starting with Lonesome Dove...part of what makes it great is the discovery of the characters' pasts.

Fantastic spoiler free review! I'm halfway through Lonesome Dove and enjoying it immensely. The only issue I have so far is the negativity toward Native Americans in the story as they are being branded as thieves and murderers. If you say this will be handled differently later in the book then I have no problem with it. Because it made me wonder if Larry McMurtry was a hater of Natives and Mexicans. I have only read one book of his before called The Sin Killer and can't remember reading anything particularly negative towards Natives in it so I thought maybe it's because this story is led by two Texas rangers who used to hunt down Comanches. I'm really looking forward to see a review done by you on James A. Michener's 'Centennial', my all time favorite Western / historical fiction novel.

You find great inconsistency when you read them in order. In Comanche moon Clara and Maggie knew each other. Another is Maggie dies in Austin but in Lonesome Dove she dies there. The continuity is the series greatest flaw. I enjoyed the reads individually until Lonesome Dove. Had I been better informed I would have read Lonesome Dove first. Enjoyed your take!

Lonesome Dove is also a favorite of mine. I've read all of the 4 books in the series, but, Lonesome Dove is the best of them. Tried reading other McMurtry stories, but, just couldn't get into them. I agree with you. We don't get any good western books anymore. Louis L'Amour is a favorite author and I've read a lot of the Sackett series. If you know of any other great western writes/books, please let me know. I read a lot of science fiction as well as lots of thrillers. But, a good western is hard to find. Not a big fan of Zane Grey's books, though. At least not of the ones that I read or tried to read.

You said this is the last great western. You a fan of Cormac McCarthy? The Border Trilogy came out after this, and in my opinion book one and two: All The Pretty Horses and The Crossing are masterpieces. If you haven't read them I'd definitely recommend giving them a shot. Cheers 🤙

I was just wondering a few days ago if you based the title of Lonesome Crown on Lonesome Dove. Now I have my answer. Funny that even though Robert Duvall played Gus in the mini-series, I always picture Sam Elliott as Gus in my head. So - now that your epic fantasy series is complete, are you working on your western??

I love the character of Clara. Such a paragon of behavior, so good and compassionate and intelligent, but still has human-level uncharitable thoughts and conflicting motivations and isn't always super nice. She feels so very human, like so many other characters.

Would this book be too overwhelming for a new reader? I'm 23 years old but I've never read a book in my whole life. I'm interested in this one because I absolutely love western movies and the history of the wild west. What'd you think?

Great review Brian! One thing i disagree with you though, is that i WOULD like to live in the old west. It was dangerous, it was a hard life, but it was a free one, and that's the consequence of freedom, danger and responsability. Beautiful times with horrifying things, and i hear he described the old west on point - i say i hear because i don't know how it actually was back then. This book is a masterpiece, i'm not even an american and i feel like one when i read, i even became a huge fan of cattlemen/cowboy culture, which is weird for a brazilian. Anyway, keep it up with the videos! Subscribed.

I tried to watch the tv series with my mom, but she didn't like the end of the first episode where this guy's face is being bitten by snakes. I'll probably switch to something more comfy like Support Your Local Sheriff! with James Garner.

Centennial by James A. Michener is the greatest Western + Historical fiction novel I have read so far hands down! Give it a try. It also got adapted to a great mini series in the 1970s by the same name. If I'm not mistaken, it was the first ever mini series. But read the book firs coz the mini series captures only a portion of the story. If you check the synopsis of the book you will have a fairly good idea why haha (also, check the reviews the book has got on Goodreads)
