Lyrics:
He called her on the road
From a lonely cold hotel room
Just to hear her say I love you one more time
But when he heard the sound
Of the kids laughing in the background
He had to wipe away a tear from his eye
A little voice came on the phone
Said Daddy when you coming home
He said the first thing that came to his mind
I'm already there
Take a look around
I'm the sunshine in your hair
I'm the shadow on the ground
I'm the whisper in the wind
I'm your imaginary friend
And I know I'm in your prayers
Oh I'm already there

The first time I heard this song was when the Iraq war started, and I had to drop off my husband to go to war. I had just given birth, and our daughter was only two (2) months old. It was the most difficult thing I had to do, because we did not have any family nearby, so I had to play the role of both mom and dad. I remember hearing this song for the first time after I dropped my husband off and I cried so hard I had to pull off the road. We were stationed in Camp Lejeune NC, and I had to go to the K-Mart there and buy the song. Once I got there, I remember that I don't even know the name of the song or the artist who sang it. After describing it to the lady, she helped me find it. My husband's seven (7) month deployment turned to fourteen (14) months, and it was the worst 14 month of my life. This was before cell phone became popular, and he could only call us from a satellite phone with horrible reception, but I looked forward to those phone calls. I could go for weeks without hearing from him, and I was just worried not knowing if he was still alive or not. I cried myself to sleep so many times listening to this song because they conveyed the same message my husband said to me. Every time I hear this song, it brings back those memories and I thank God for bringing my husband home safely, because I know some friends whose spouses did not make it. Thank you Lonestar for making this song.

As a former member of the NYPD and current retired PAPD officer who worked on 09-11-01, I've been listening to this song quite a bit leading up to today, the 20th anniversary of that fateful day. Everytime I hear it I'm brought to tears thinking about the words. "Im already there, take a look around, I'm the sunshine in your hair, I'm the shadow on the ground..." Words that many people did not get a chance to say to their love ones. Thank you for this beautiful song. May God Bless Us All.

My dad spent 27 years in the Navy. He was deployed to Korea and Vietnam. I used to look out the window every night thinking he wouldn’t come home and watch the news and worry he was one of the soldiers who was killed. I was lucky, he came back. There are so many kids whose parents didn’t make it back. This song breaks my heart. It was every day of my life. Please remember and help those kids whose parents didn’t come back.

Oh, gosh. This is something most of us cannot understand without the experience. I cannot imagine going through that. I am so very glad he came back. But, yes, all of those children whose parents did not come back during those years. A lifetime of loss. And then, of course, the ones who came back but were never the same....Then and now. Thank you for your comment. It gives me some tiny feeling of what it must have been like.

I know this song is for veterans, but I remember my mom always singing this. We lost my dad many years ago due to heart issues, and this song always brought her to tears because the lyrics made her feel like my dad was talking right to her. I always wondered why the song made her sad, and one day she explained it to me. So this song does hold a special place in my memories, and it did for her until the day she passed away as well.

So powerful Sir....I remember my Mom and Sister, traveled from Corpus Christi to Killeen, 2003, before my Co. flew the next day to the desert. My Mom and sister, had no idea, in the middle of the night, which barracks I was at, at North Ft.Hood....only the Angel of God, his mighty hand, cause my Mom and Sister to park their car in front of my barracks and she looked around and asked a soldier, where 887th Co was and the soldier said, Ma'am, your looking at the barracks. Praise the Lord how mighty God is. I was in shock my when I saw my Mom and Sister, we embraced, hugged, spent time together, prayed and next day, my family was there to see me off to the desert in Kuwait 2003. Going to be Twenty years ago!!! God is good!!!

This song always reminds me of my dad, he used to travel up and down the country as an engineer and every evening when my mother would be cooking, on his way home from work he'd call to tell us how far away he was and what time he would be home for tea ❤️ I was always a daddy's girl and we were close but I didn't realise how much he was my best friend until after he died. Every day I wish I could spend another day with him and see his sparkly eyes when he spoke to me, I'd love to be able to tell him how much I adore him and how much I love him and how priceless he is to me, I pray one day we'll be reunited again

He called her on the road From a lonely, cold hotel room Just to hear her say I love you one more time But when he heard the sound Of the kids laughing in the background He had to wipe away a tear from his eye A little voice came on the phone Said, "Daddy when you coming home?" He said the first thing that came to his mind I'm already there Take a look around I'm the sunshine in your hair I'm the shadow on the ground I'm the whisper in the wind I'm your imaginary friend And I know I'm in your prayers Oh, I'm already there She got back on the phone Said I really miss you, darling Don't worry about the kids--they'll be all right Wish I was in your arms Lying right there beside you But I know that I'll be in your dreams tonight And I'll gently kiss your lips Touch you with my fingertips So turn out the light and close your eyes I'm already there Don't make a sound I'm the beat in your heart I'm the moonlight shining down I'm the whisper in the wind And I'll be there until the end Can you feel the love that we share? Oh, I'm already there We may be a thousand miles apart But I'll be with you wherever you are I'm already there Take a look around I'm the sunshine in your hair I'm the shadow on the ground I'm the whisper in the wind And I'll be there until the end Can you feel the love that we share? Oh, I'm already there Oh, I'm already there

As a trucker gone from home a month or more at a time I think of my wife and kid every time I hear this. I think there should be a video remake with truckers in the video or oil rig works. No disrespect to the military but they are not the only ones who are away from there family doing something to better this country. Truckers do too.

My dad worked away all week on the RR, prob like a trucker, as he was only home a few days a week. I never really got to see my dad in the 40+ yrs i knew him (he passed away at age 74, i was 44 at the time. I was glad when he took early retirement at age 62 or i wouldn't have ever gotten to spend more time with him, which is the only good thing i can say about my disability of severe pain; it gave me time to spend with him. I agree, no disrespect at all to the military, they risk their lives, but like you say, a lot of people have to be away from their families just to support them. I can remember waving thru the window every Sun night as he drove away. He would turn on the dome light so we could see him waving back. I know he cried when my brother & i would hug him good bye sometimes. Lord do i miss him. Sorry Josh that you have to be away from your family for so long, always be careful so you can come home safe to your family.

Josh Blanchard You are welcome fellow life traveler! I hope that the roads have been kind to you & that you have been able to be with you family more. Love is all we have in this world to hold onto that's good, & with this hatred & violence going on in the world, in my opinion, b/c of a hateful, vindictive, controlling candidate, i am very worried for the world. You give the family a few extra hugs next time you have to leave. You have my admiration for doing what is prob a hard job, going thru the unknown sometimes & long, lonely stretches. Take care, friend. From a woman who just gets no one to talk to sometimes except family who live nearby but don't get me wrong, i love them, but love to hear the stories of other people in this world & of their struggles. Take care!

He would cry telling me" He loved me more than infinity and even though were thousands of miles apart I'm always with you". He died 10 days after my 11th birthday and I'm 28 now, and I still hear him crying to me "I love you to infinity Lori Lue!". "I'm already there, Take a look around, I'm the sunshine in your hair, I'm the shadow on the ground, I'm the whisper in the wind, I'm your imaginary friend, And I know I'm in your prayers, Oh, I'm already there..." To all of us who have lost someone we loved, and for the people away from your family. God speed and bless you all. Those we have lost, they are with God now, for those away from family, way God be with them to bring them home. Here now in 2022 we the one's who made this far must be thankful for those that went before and paved the way. Let us always remember our soldiers that fought and died for us and that defend us. Our first responders and medical professionals who put it all on the line and stood in the gap for us during the pandemic. Last but never least many sung and unsung heroes who rose to the occasion, who saw and acted. Many cries were issued and hearts with compassion stepped forward. Sincerely to all of you that do the things we take for granted. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. May God bless you all. Stay safe. Stay strong.

Mine passed away to. Him and I are really close we hung out together all the time when I was a kid. Then when my step grandma passed away he came to live us and it was like old times again. He started getting sick all the time with sea diff and pneumonia and he had copd and lots of other problems it got to the point where he was miserable he could no longer eat regularly and he began to lose tons of weight. He wasn't happy he started to get demicha really by that time only time he was happy was when family came to visit him in the nursing home I went as often as I could.then one day day I got a text from my mom at work telling me he had passed away. I tried to hold back crying because I was at work but I couldn't and just lost it on my way up to the front of the store to. this was the song that made me think of him. I had prayed one night. I knew his time was running short so I prayed that when he passed that he would have no pain that he would do it peacefully in his sleep and that's exactly what happened. I am praying for you as well. And my grandpa was in Vietnam

Jody Louise my dad died unexpectedly two years ago, I went to do a fundraiser that day and I called my dads cell phone that morning, I remembered there was snow that morning and when he didn't answer the first call I thought he was probably shoveling the snow. Well I got to the place I was having my fundraiser and ended ten minutes early since the snow was bad enough for me to leave so I called dad again and once again no answer so I got concerned that dad had an emergency shoveling the snow so I called mom since dad hadn't answered any calls I left him. Fast forward two days later, my brother who had been snowbound and only got out that morning told me that dad died two days before and I was confined to the family home. For a few days I wanted to believe the snow caused issues.

just throughout this whole song... I feel so sorry for those who lost their Father or Mother in the wars... this is the best song, and I remember this being in a "Gratitude; Pass it on" ad from when I was like 7 or 8. I don't know you, or you don't know me. but for those who served our country; thank you so much for your service and I love you guys!

i'm an Air Force Vet that deployed to Kuwait not long after 9/11. When you join the service, your coworkers are not just coworkers, they are family. I feel every death as if I lost a family member. This song is one of a few that brings me to tears, especially near the end when you see that sailor meet his newborn for the first time and is in tears. R.E.D. and bring them home safe.

My dad used to call and sing this to us when he was deployed. He's passed now honorably. He lost a fight with cancer. And this song hurts worse than there are words to explain. Because I know he won't be coming home this time. His fight continues elsewhere. And one day I'll see him again. But until then these words ring in my head. I know he sees me and he's proud. But my god I wish he'd come home....

My fiancee is on deployment he's been in for over 27 years we both agreed when he comes home this time he's retiring 😢. It's to much. I feel like I'm right there with him fighting everytime he went to Afghanistan my heart was in my throat when there was an attack over there if I didn't hear from him on Sunday I always thought the worst he was captured twice. One on deployment in Greenland and once in Afghanistan his men fought and got him back . Thank God. I can't wait until August 15th he's supposed to be coming home then He's in Cyprus this time. Damn I miss him. 😢😢😢. But I'm also very proud of him..❤❤❤❤

Dear all Military people who served, serving or going to serve Thank You all SOOOOOOOOO much for your service, bravery, and sacrifice to defend this great, powerful country. Its because of you why it's such a powerful, feared country. All men and women served/serving you guys are all really strong, stronger than i'll ever be. I had a surgery on my legs because of Cerebral Palsy and they said i couldn’t walk for 3 months but i was walking in a few weeks and the process was painful as hell that was 2 years ago. So Everybody says i am really strong no, you guys are 10 times stronger than i ever dream to be and i have no idea how you guys handle all that. And you tell those bitches that say you guys are babies or shit like that because of what war did to them or because some of you guys cry to shut the fuck up they have no idea what those men and woman went and go through. Its because of all you men and woman why i have my freedom and why everyone that we fight is sorry that they messed with USA because you guys aren’t afraid to get dirty and defend your country and to do that we’ll but boot in there ass and say that's the American way you guys would and do do anything and everything for our country. I will never know or experience how you guys feel. People don’t know how much you guys go through they think it's a piece of cake well those stupid idiots are wrong it is hard what you guys go through i could ever do that. NEVER. I hope everyone makes it home safely to their families. Everyone says their hero is a sports star like Peyton Manning or Jimmie Johnson, no they're wrong the real idols/heroes are all you Military men and woman, The true American bad asses. You guys tell them “Don’t mess with the USA again”. Thank You all, you guys are just so brave, 40 times braver than me or than i'll ever dream to be, your sacrifice and bravery all to keep our freedom. Thank You all for your service. Go kick those bitches guys! Those people who make fun of Military people crying they are motherfucking bitches it isn't funny they have know idea what you guys deal with or they miss their family. So all those fuckers should shut up and move out of the country. Thank You all and i appreciate Toby Keith and his love for the Military just like me i love that and all military tribute songs because it makes me remember who takes the sacrifice and real bravery of for this country and these songs because it says the truth about our Country and Military. Thank You all and This is my Thank you letter to all you men and womAn and my God and Jesus be with you. So all you that complain about little stupid things these men and women go through ten million times worse!!!!!

Bee Pope I gasped and my throat closed as I read your comment, just now, just before I began to type this response. Please visit me in my dream : I first heard this song on Sept. 11, 2001. I pulled over, on I-81, heading into Harrisburg, just past a PennDot sign advising, ABSOLUTELY NO ENTRY INTO NEW YORK CITY - your comment is as powerful, as awesome and as painful and human, as that moment. The many times I have dreamed about my two brothers : I THOUGHT YOU DIED ! and then that cold, sober " Oh Yeah " jerk back into reality.. The many times - just two or three nights ago - my dream about my mother. Yeah, I am praying for those dreams. Your comment isn't breaking my heart but it's making my heart feel bigger. Blessings, and Peace, and Happy Acceptance of what you cannot change even though you'd beg and bargain to make things different and LIKE BEFORE. Thanks, Bee Pope, and uh........sweet dreams.
