Brandon Wicknick stopped by the trailer so I had him chat to us about JZ engines. I ask him the differences between the 1JZ and the 2JZ, and all the different versions. We learn their limitations, why they work so well, where they came from, who designed them, and much more. Drifting has been a showcase for the 2JZ engine because drifting is so abusive on engines, but the JZ just keeps on plugging along. They have great oiling systems, they sound amazing, and they can make huge HP and still spool a turbo just fine. We even chat about how to make these motors shoot fire balls.
I had never really seen a FAQ video about the JZ engine, so I figured I would just make one. Also, he answered a lot of questions about all the different variants of the JZ engine, such as the 2JZ-GTE 2JZ-GE 1JZ-GTE VVTI vs non VVTI, even the direct injection 2JZ.

Valuable info here, Brandon is an amazing resource! Most people just cover the 1k HP 2j stuff. But the majority of us are interested in the sub 600hp builds. Great video 👍👍

Steph Papadakis put up some of the best JZ videos, where he fully tears down AND builds a 1JZ and fully explains all the torque specs as he goes along with a lot of the other technical details. Check out Papadakis Racing’s channel anyway, Steph is super knowledgeable and a great guy. He also tears down and builds up the new Supra engine, but that’s outside the scope of the JZ stuff. Cheers!

I really enjoy having a Utah based drift man to follow that is doing it for the love of drifting. I really enjoyed Brandon’s abandoned airport video back a few years ago.👍🏻😆👍🏻 I can’t thank Aaron enough for creating drift week. Grass root straight up fun has seemed to be dying. Hopefully all that hell some of you guys go through on drift week is known to be great content for us to watch. I myself have been so excited to watch all of it. ✌🏼&❤️

Thanks for the kind words! I am curious how you are finding it all? Do you already know all the drivers and follow them on KZfaq, or do you look at the content and see who is there and figure it out from there, or search on KZfaq? I made a playlist over on my channel which has it all there, but I have no idea if people are finding it. It also goes in reverse order

I have had the opportunity to be at a little track out in my area here in Fairfield that a good friend introduced me to irl drifting at. Brandon was there. The community there was very tight. I have seen the video you are referring to pop up a few hours ago. I am always waiting for mainly Yours and Brandon’s content. I am a video game drifter🤣🤣🤣. I have been following drifting since 2005. I have an online friend that has a mustang with Japanese “Chrome Johnnys” on it that is based in Texas. He drives there at your events occasionally. It’s actually kind of weird how it all comes together.

Been running a gs300 2jz from junk yard for 6 years boosted with gte headgasket making 415hp at 14psi. Been In a total loss wreck and now running in an is300

When i spoke to Kenneth Moen, for his E46 2jz he ran in FD, the solution for the power steering was the reservoir placement, to get it to have a good flow path down to the pump, so you eliminate the risk of the pump having insufficient access to oil.

Somethings you can try with the power steering pumps is, 1: change the pulley size to reduce the speed. ( since you're high rpm with lots of wheel work / feed back pressure it could be cavitating ) 2: pull 2 vanes from inside, opposite each other to reduce some pressure. ( works with some offroad stuff so not sure how it will work for drift though )

I’m a lexus master technician, problem with the power steering is the screen in the reservoir gets clogged. I would install a new one. You can clean it with brake cleaner but it takes a while.

I fitted a dual pass radiator with a pair off twin mondeo fans and run two oil coolers and it’s sorted my heat problem, never crossed 90deg on oil or water on the dyno for like 2 and a half hours on the dyno

I'm looking forward to that bearing replacement. I haven't driven alot in my CD009 swapped JZ but the friction bearing is kinda stuck in my mind. ... looking forward to lifting the transmission out one of these days.

Maybe this is a possibe idea for the power steering system, most systems with a larger pully for steering pumps might save them because when deleting ac etc smaller belt will always spinn the pump faster . So my guess is a bigger pully

I remember when 1jz in the USA were under 900 bucks, and 2jz turbo motors from aristos were under 1500, and no one wanted them because everyone said they sucked lol.

Maybe for drifting specifically, however if you haven't done your homework on LS stuff and haven't sent he kinds of things that have been done by Matt Happle and the guys on Sloppy Mechanics then you might want to learn the potential and the Don't B.S. Me build recipe for a 500-600hp engine with only what you need and nothing you don't.

Cd trans problem not changing into 5th could also be the gk tech shifter set up a few of us here have had the same problem and also reverse was really hard to find. went to serial 9 shifters and problem fixed

I've used GK shifter on several builds. It works great but there are a few tricks you need to know when installing it. @officer_dan has covered it in an install video.

Hi, is it possible after a single turbo conversion on a stock 2JZGTE engine the IACV fails? I have a really bad boost leak and my tuner says it's my IACV. I did a boost leak test and everything seems fine. I also checked the wastegate and that too is fine. What can cause that kind of boost leak if all plumbing is good?

I'm not downing the JZ by any means, only pointing out that he wasn't entirely correct about not being able to make 700hp with an LS without a camshaft, in fact you could make 700hp with a late 4.8 that came factory in vans making 302hp with 243 heads, NBS intake, no AFM, only do valve springs, boost and make 700hp at the crank as long as you're lucky and it has enough wear and is an engine that has open enough ring gap, occasionally an engine will.have tighter than normal ring gap and will pop a piston top, at 700hp it should be ok. Of course a cam is going to make more power with less boat and isn't difficult or expensive to do but, yeah I get his point that yeah the JZ is a great engine. I have had a few Coyotes, I have a few LSs, I have a roller cam 351w...I am seriously wanting to get my first cheap as dirt GS300 with a 2JZ-GE to play with, I have seen a 3GSE blacktop Beams engine with a 6 apeed for not horrible money from an Altezza RS200 for sale recently I think might be cool too, maybe to put in an beater mini-truck. I am really stoked to keep hearing more about 2JZs, I would love to get a 1JZ too. I would like to play with a 1FZ-FE 4.5L I6 from a Land Cruiser to turbo and have a "big block" JZ in a fast car.

12:37 Thats true about the LS V8 but factory sealed Coyote V8's can reliably handle 7, 8, 900+ horsepower with just fuel and boost.

Want a factory sealed 1j/2j, goto toyota and order one. And yes, you can still get them new. Same goes with most of toyota's performance motors. You can also get r154's new from toyota.g

GE has a single layer gasket. I should clarify that I have seen several GEs with blown head gasket. I have never personally blown a head gasket and I am not nice to my engines. I got up to 130C on drift week and I'm driving the car home with zero engine problems.

you leave it stock in a JZX chassis. they don't get hot in factory setups, my JZX100 in Japan that I drift A LOT when I am over there has a stock clutch fan and radiator.

I've had CD009 adapter issues but I still love the trans and will continue to use it in future builds. Complaints yes but not enough to stop using it.

Lol horsepower per dollar, come to Australia we get rb30 for slabs of beer bolt turbos on em and make easy power the oil pumps not a drama in the 30.. heard enough story’s of rod knocking jz and they cost a fortune here

just watch the skid factories break down of the JZ's and learn facts about the JZ motors with all 4 next to each other and why they work and dont work when mix matched instead of 15yr old "internet data" NA 2j vvti is the only weak bottom end with the small rods.

Deep in the heart of the Salt Lake City GHETTO lol. Go look at the video I made with him called something like "where do formula d drivers go after formula d" or whatever and see how ghetto fabulous this man is. It is terrifying. His tow rig didn't even have the seats bolted down in it, and you could LITERALLY FALL out of the cab if you leaned one of the chair back too far.
