Hello!! Nice video of our train! I am an on-train service attendent who works on The Ocean. I just want to clarify the comment regarding our septic system on the train. We have holding tanks for all grey and black water waste that comes from flushing, washing, etc. We have vacuum trucks that clean out those tanks once our train arrives in Montreal and Halifax. Those signs were from days gone by when there were no holding tanks. Canadian laws mandate that no waste can be deposited on our tracks in any location. If you ride on our sister train, The Canadian, you will see the vac truck cleaning the tanks in Saskatoon, for example. Sometimes you will see water come out of some overflow piping when the train is in the station. This is the condensation from our HVAC system, not from toilets or sinks. @@annettestrampe9524 you know, I haven’t seen that sign very often. I feel as though they have been removed from most rooms and maybe have been overlooked in others. We are in all the rooms making beds and setting them up for passengers so maybe I’m just not noticing. If anything, they’re fun conversation starters!!! 😂

They signs were left there to mess with your mind. Via likes to play mind games. I’m pretty sure I am kidding. Via is one of the best things in Canada. Especially the staff.

The storage space you call a "small cubby" was originally for shoes. If you look a them they have a now blocked second door that opened into the corridor. The idea was you'd put your shoes in there and the sleeping car attendant could take them out, shine your shoes, and put them back. That was regarded as an important thing in the 1950s when the cars were designed.

In 1956 my brother and I put our shoes in that little space. When my father discovered that we had our shoes shined he was very angry. He had seen British officers having thier shoes shined by their batmen in Asia during the War. He told us to never ask another man to do such a thing for us ever. He went to find and pay the porter. As punishment we had to polish the families shoes for months every Saturday for Mass on Sunday

11:50 all their coaches have retention tanks, that sign is most likely there because the system could be dumped while at the station, and flushing may interfere with that process.

I've watched many sleeper train videos, but this one was more interesting than most. I'm impressed with the fact that although the cars are old and dated, they're in remarkably good shape and they looked clean. By "catered and not prepared fresh" I assume the food is like airline meals, prepared offsite and just heated up. They looked pretty good!

FYI, all if Via's sleepers and long distance rolling stock were actually refurbished in the early 1990s when they were also converted to HEP. Though many new cars have been refurbished again since around 2013 or so but the work is ongoing.

Great video. Was not anticipating that ending. Those coaches had interiors more akin to some actual lounges than anything I've ever seen on a train. Definitely a unique consist for Canada and the North American continent as a whole. Keep up the good content

10 yrs ago we travelled coast to coast in Canada and the last section on the Ocean picking it up at Quebec. We travelled in the renaissance coaches/ I could not fault Via on the whole trip it was very memorable. It is a shame you missed Halifax,

I love the train between Montreal and Halifax and have indulged myself many times over the last 25 to 30 years. Gone are the days of asking the service manager if there is an available roomette for the night, for a fee of $50. The luck of the draw was part of the fun when I was younger. In 2022 I took the Ocean both ways. MTL to HX in mid July and the return 7 weeks later. Ended up in a Chateau car each time.

Chateau cars have been the standard on THE OCEAN for many years. They have been removed from THE CANADIAN ages ago and are used on shorter runs. Accomodation is actually quite nice unless you are above average height of 6 feet. This was considered very tall back when they were constructed in the 50s. These are the same accommodations as were on the CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR, SUPER CHIEF etc. All constructed by the BUDD COMPANY which used their standard berths.

I have such fond memories of the Roomette travelling from Sackville, NB to Montreal and back during several winters for meetings. I would get ready for bed, fold it down, settle in with my full-length down coat over the covers and put up the window blind. I would never sleep because I was watching an extremely beautiful part of Canada pass by, with snow flying past the window. As soon as the Chateau Frontenac loomed up across the river all lit up about 4:30 am, I knew it was time to return to the real world. Great times.

I'm a former Sackvillian myself. I remember, vaguely, taking the train to Montreal and back for Christmas in the early '90s. We stopped going because we couldn't afford it anymore.

In Dec 1992, I took the VIA train from Toronto to Halifax. Switched trains in Montreal. If I recall, left Toronto at 12pm and arrived in Halifax around 4pm the next day. Just coach. I didn't get much sleep, the snow covered scenery was just amazing. Mesmerizing non-stop picture postcard. I do recall it got a little chilly in the coach when we went through northern New Brunswick. I think I slept for 14hrs when I got to my parents' place.

Train enthousiasts say you should get a roomette with a step. This type of roomette sits at a higher level in the car. Thus, you will hear less noise from the wheels under the car. It would be nice if they could refurbish the Chateau cars.

So concerning food on VIA, the Ocean does catered food. The Canadian however uses actual onboard chefs with fresh ingredients so that is something to bear in mind. This is mostly down to the Renaissance diner not being an original configuration. Its a converted sleeper car with dining space. The food is heated in microwave and easychef ovens located in the two service cars. I traveled in the triple bedroom in 2022 as part of my journey from Toronto-Truro and back 2 months later. It was absolutely wonderful. it's position in the middle of the coach made it very quiet and comfortable. The big chairs are actually very comfortable and you can have a table erected by the crew if you ask. The bed was wonderful! More comfy than the beds i have at home in Toronto and in Nova Scotia. I slept in the upper bunk. Only downside was not having a window but i didn't mind as i had my laptop and phone to use before going to bed. One of my best ever train experiences but very expensive. The people of the 1950s knew how to build a good quality fleet of passenger cars. That's why we still use budds and have no plans currently to replace them. Shame you got caught in the washouts. Technically there is a wye in Truro to turn the train around and there's a Maritime bus station right next to the train station but the train terminated in Moncton because that's where the crew's hub is so it was easier for them to terminate there. Fun fact: when there was a companion train to the Ocean (Called the Atlantic), the Ocean terminated in Moncton and the Atlantic continued on to Halifax

The reason they don't use Truro is because of lack of space for the actual train. Even if they had gone to Truro, there is no room anymore for said train. Where Moncton it can sit at the station overnight. The passing track was taken out in Truro a few years ago.

Technically there's a passing track along the platform that i think could fit the train. Plus CN has a small yard that isn't usually full. Like i said, VIA's hub in the east is Moncton and Moncton just has better overall facilities for terminating and turning trains@@trainboy1979

Back in the 1980's I would go up to Canada every summer to ride on a different rail route.I traveled on the Canadian from Montreal to Vancouver and back. Also traveled on the Algoma Central RR from Sault ,Ste Marie to Hearst Ontario. Then another time I did a complete circle trip thru the Canadian maritimes thru Nova Scotia , New Brunswick, and Quebec. Loved every bit of my Canadian train trips.The scenerey in Canada is the best in the world!!!

Chateau sleepers are the best, with almost every type of room available. They are also the only set of cars still with an intact fleet from Canadian Pacific’s 1954 order. By the way, Central Station does have a nice art deco facade behind all those other buildings, but it can only be seen along the rear loading area.

@@LonestarTrips update......it was cancelled so I never got to go. I am currently in Montreal waiting to return to Toronto. It has been rescheduled for today but would mean missing a flight as I am due back in the UK on Wednesday. I did get a full refund from via who also refunded the cost of getting here. They are paying for me to return to Toronto in business class and also paid for a very nice hotel. I write this in the busines lounge at gare central. Sometimes the downs contribute to adventures just as much as the ups. Back next year to try again.

I remember travelling with my mother from Montreal as a small child to visit relatives in Halifax in the early '50s, when this train was called the "Ocean Limited". What a welcome return to those days!

This train was/is running on the pre-Confederation Interprovincial Railway line, which predated the CPR West to Vancouver by many decades.

In 1988 I traveled on VIA's Ocean from Halifax to Montreal. I traveled in a full bedroom compartment in a sleeper car . I enjoyed every minute of the trip. IT was wonderful!!

Shame that your trip ended in Moncton but VIA has no control over the weather ! One thing that has improved since this video is track speed in New Brunswick, no more 30 mph restriction. My trip to Miramichi went faster, food still good and I had a double bedroom, better option for my money. Thanks for sharing and you should try it again.

Nice vid. in the early 80,s i was hh to ont from bc. freight train from prince george bc to jasper. in the second engine by invite from the engineer. it was the hardest travel but the most fantastic scenery you could ever have in canada.

I rode these cars from Toronto in 58 and 59 as an 11 and 12 year old travelling alone to PEI to summer with my grandmother. At Moncton my car was shunted onto the Ferry to Summerside. Back then it was called the Ocean Limited as it had limited stops compared to most trains.

If the car is still good, it's still going to be run. Comfort is more important than newness on a long train! I have taken the Ocean to and from Halifax, but in a Renaissance car I think. There was a sale, and we got a bedroom. It was a similar layout to the last one shown here, but it was a bench seat. That culvert looks like an engineering fail that was waiting to happen...

You have a similar problem to myself.. every time I consider a long distance train trip my 6’6” frame reminds me that it’s probably not a good idea. I still would like to try it once just to say I’ve done it.

Yeah it’s definitely not a great experience being so tall. The bedroom bunks are at least a little more usable, as the lower berth is about a foot wider than in a roomette, allowing you to bend your legs to fit better. Of course it’s still not perfect, and won’t be until someday Amtrak adds a “tall passengers” option to the rooms 😂

Most, if not all, if the spare shells were scrapped a few years ago. It looks like VIA is going to eventually standardize with the new Siemens Venture cars.

Only for corridor services. Long distance trains will continue to use budd cars for the forseeable future and any future fleet orders will be made to be compatible with the budd fleet

Before watching this, I'd never heard the "longish" stops described as "smoke stops". As a non-smoker, such a purpose for those stops would never occur to me. The little cubby-hole near the ceiling wasn't just a storage area. It was where you'd put your shoes. There is another little door, accessible from the corridor, which the porter used to take these shoes to polish them, returning them before you woke up. Miramichi is pronounced Meera-muh-SHEE. Even Canadians usually get it wrong. Was it hurricane Fiona that caused all the damage in Nova Scotia? On the whole, I give your video an eight out of ten. Sorry you missed Nova Scotia,, but the Ocean misses a lot of the best parts of New Brunswick.

No one ever said it was a luxury train. For luxury expect to pay even more in taxes and fares.. As a Canadian taxpayer would you like your taxes to subsidize all this ridership? The narrator comes across a bit pompous for my tastes but that doesn't take away from the lovely train ride in beautiful Canadian countryside. Chill out. You come across as more pompous than the narrator. Relax more. Take a train.

Even though you don't like the roomlook, consider yourself lucky.. That is one of the last un changed budd cars there are. Most chateau sleepers have been re-upholstered. Also the mechanical switches are found on all via sleeper cars.

@@LonestarTrips I rode it twice. Both times was only to Schenectady from NYP but both times were on Turbo trains. Once as a kid in the 1980s and once more on one of its last runs in the early 2000s. Thise trains were truly magnificent.

These won‘t be replaced by the Siemens sets. The Siemens sets are only for daytime corridor use, not for long overnight journeys.

Great video. What is truly beyond me is that those coaches seem to have not been renovated once, I mean, the age of coaches is not necessarily a problem, but a thorough modernization would have been more than just necessary. I’m glad electric lights were invented when those cars have been build, otherwise it probably would still have oil lamps. Ah yes, and small correction, for breakfast, those were crêpes, not crapes.

Perhaps it would be an idea to get your information correct before complaining or criticizing. These coaches have been renovated/refurbished since acquisition by VIA RAIL in 1977/78 a number of times. Chateau Class Sleepers are on the Ocean as economy transport yet reasonable accomodation where short distance is priority. They have not been on the Transcontinental service THE CANADIAN for many years. As far as sewage on the track....get real. Gone for ages and ages and ages and ages. You get the drift. Perhaps it is necessary to realize that VIA provides the same as AMTRAK...the service necessary for the Route travelled. Some southern overnight Routes on AMTRAK are not the Paragon of service and accommodations either especially when it comes to dining experiences and accomodation spaces. Meals on THE CANADIAN are similar in content yet at a higher standard than other Routes. Tablecloth dining and place settings as in a high end restaurant....including quality desserts. Preparation of meals is at a superior service to other shorter Routes. Compare Routes similar as the TransCont EMPIRE BUILDER, CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR AND SOUTHWEST CHIEF. Dining on the CANADIAN is akin to a four star restaurant. Not available on any AMTRAK train. Dining on THE OCEAN is still superior to same distance routes on AMTRAK. Not criticizing just saying.

Catered meals? Is this unique to The Ocean? I believe ( based on what I've seen on Mighty Trains) they're prepared on board while on The Canadian.

In recent years they have blended the two types of cars together and sent the majority of the steel to the Canadian which is a fairly luxurious tourist train. With a lot of renovations and restorations. Some of which you see in the larger rooms. The park and dome cars are not often used anymore on the Ocean either unfortunately and are always part of the Canadian. For a long while the Ocean was exclusively the European cars. The Canadian has full service dining where food is cooked on board. The European ones were not designed to have cooking facilities likely due to their smaller size and original purpose. When I was on the Ocean this summer I was told once they complete the replacement of the fleet in central Canada they are then getting two new trains to replace the present Ocean and send the remaining steel to the Canadian and Winnipeg trains. The tracks have been bad in northern NB for years. CN uses the line I am guessing that goes through the Saint John area as such they use the northern tracks less. I believe at one point the Federal Government stepped in to make sure the tracks were kept so that passenger service can remain. CN has abandoned several tracks over the years. You use to be able to go by train to Yarmouth and Sydney as well. The majority of VIAs business comes in Ontario and Quebec.The Canadian second with significantly less revenue from the Ocean. Unfortunately Canada does not heavily invest in rail like Europe which is a shame. I am grateful for what we have as I really dislike air travel these days and use.the train whenever possible. I am from Halifax. The tracks and roads took a beating from the storm.. Most of the flooding was outside of the city itself but some rail bed damage did occur in areas surrounding the harbour and Bedford Basin .Due to the rail line being a vital link for our province they worked quickly to restore the tracks. I was on the train not long after. Great videos 😊

@@richardcrooks11 CN actually uses the line from Moncton to Edmundston (they do go to Saint John, but that is another line) Most freight traffic goes up threw the middle of the province to the other corner versus the bathurst way. If there is a derailment or problem on the main line, trains will use the bathurst route.

@@richardcrooks11 The line in the middle is called the "NTR", more direct to Montreal and beyond. But mostly unpopulated areas. The line the ocean runs on is more populated, but very little freight traffic on a day to day basis. The line to Saint John is only CN till it gets to that city, beyond that is NBSR into the state of Maine.

I travel on the ocean every year to visit family in Nova Scotia I always travel in coach It's not the most comfortable, but it is affordable via rail charges. So much money for a sleeper its just crazy. I will never pay that kind of money to sleep in the 1950s closet. I really wish they would lower the price a little bit so everyone can experience the sleeper train properly

They wash the train every time its in Montreal but naturally, it becomes very dirty along its journey. Lots of bugs end up built up on the power as well

I thought maxium speed was 79mph without cab signals. Does VIA , CN or CP have cab signal systems?

It's a U.S. government regulation that limits trains to 79 mph. That regulation doesn't apply in Canada.

We also do not have PTC and yet, our trains generally run just as safely if not safer than those in America. That isn't to say we don't need a system like PTC but there hasn't been any major train disasters where PTC would've made a difference, not since Hinton in 1987@@BSempervirens

Budds are not going to be retired any time soon. The venture cars are only replacing the corridor sets. The only cars being retired by them are the LRC and Renaissance cars

I take Amtrak from Harrisburg PA where I live. I ride in ancient cars. The windows haven't been washed in generations. Time for new cars. What would the line use for cars if they refurbished the old ones?

Honestly that staggered roomette is super smart, apart from the en suite. Seeing something like that on European night trains would be amazing, and would likely make for really good affordable train travel at a decently low price point compared to the full 3 person sleepers for private occupancy. ... Still 450 dollars for a trip like that seems a tad much. Like the luxury dining is cool, but it doesnt seem that good for the general public and especially a public service offering.

That was about what I paid for one way from Portland to LA in May 2021… ~ 900 round trip, in a Roomette. I came out of that experience as a confirmed train-nut.

@@dennisyoung4631 Yeah, but considering you usually spend something like 100-150 dollars for an overnight sleeper train in a private compartment on a Western European night train, and this includes those that spend a lot of daytime travelling too, the 200+ dollar price tag just seems like awful value.

@@drdewott9154 It's actually REALLY good for North America. Keep in mind that most European sleeper trains don't have the same level of dining available (both in number of meals, quality, and presence of an actual dining car) and the distances are much longer in North America.

842 miles in 22 hours. That's an average travel speed of 38 mph, or 61 kmh. In most developed countries the trains run well over 300 kmh, like Japan, France or China. Canada is a backward nation - overtaxed and poorly served.
