Having known Jimmy since he was a teen, both he and his brother (Joe RIP, whom I was closer to) were/are the epitome of humility. Jimmy is one of the most talented guitarists to have come from our small town..and has since, become one of the greats, as an accomplished WORLD talent. His credits, proceed him. Yet..he still greets me by name, when I see him. I played with/for his brother, in gigs..and Joe was exactly the same way. You can learn to be humble..but you have to be born with..and maintain humility.

Saw Col Bruce's band. Saw Jimmy and John McLaughlin together. Saw Jimmy rippin' it up with Panic. I have constantly sought the best and found it. When SRV died I said to myself "You'd better try hard to see these players before they are gone or you will miss your opportunity". So I did, and Jimmy Herring is one of those players you have to seek out and see. He is all that.

Yes. I heard Col. Bruce Hampton 30 years ago and fell in love with Jimmy Herrings playing, a master of improv and combining major and minor with ease... great video. Thank you!

Man... such a good dude. you get everything with this guy, an absolute love of music, a true guitar master, and the shirt off his back if you need it. That’s pretty rare in the music business.

Jimmy Herring is an incredibly nice and gracious man. Took my teenaged son to hear him play at Catalina's years back, when Jimmy was covering the guitar spot at a Tony Williams (I think). No offense to Tony, but we went to see Jimmy. Prior to the gig, I saw him sitting away at the bar, talking to someone. I asked the server if I could pay for his dinner, and the server came back and said "he already ate, but he'd like to come thank you". He came to the table and said thanks, and I introduced him to my son who was just starting to play guitar and loved Jimmy. Rather than say thank you and disappear, he then stood there and talked with us both for 15 minutes...so gracious, so humble. My son and I won't ever forget it. And what a monster player.

I can’t get off the Blue Light Rain album…Dark Star, Blues For Allah medley, Unbroken…Jimmy is right where he needs to be with WSMFP…Red Rocks vibe this year was similar to Smoke Mtn in early 2000…he’s gonna be fine after the tonsils are gone✌️🙏

The first time I ever heard Jimmy was in 2002. I heard a Jazz is Dead album. I was almost done with classical guitar college and hadn't touched my electric for years. I was deep in the snobby classical education world and thought of electric guitar as low level. In one listen to Jimmy, I heard blues mixed with virtuosity, and amazing tone! I was inspired to pick up my electric and the rest was history.

Jimmy was the first guitar player I heard who could shred, but in a way that spoke to me. Always mixed with things I could play on my guitar, but then he’s throw in somethings that were way out of my wheel house. Told myself I’d try learn that style. And that was decades ago. 😔 Anyway, I played that live ARU album so much. Always wished I could have seen that exact lineup live. I think of that album every time I see Jimmy’s name. ❤

I met Jimmy outside of one of his jazz shows in Champaign, IL, and he is the most kind and humble person on the face of this earth. This is a great interview to watch! Two amazing people in the industry.

This was a great interview. The colonel comes up in so many conversations. he touched the hearts and souls of all my heroes. Like jimmy, Derek, Duane, Gregg, You. Thanks for your incredible contributions to "real music" not just by your great guitars, but stuff like this interview, and all the cool stuff you do.. Thanks Paul. T 😎

You guys were talking about the 30th Anny PRS Experience show! I was there! My daughter’s due date was the next day; she was born very premature and passed away about 20 minutes after she was born, so I was going through a pretty dark period. That show, seeing Jimmy, Bruce and John (plus Otiel, Matt, and the other band members who were all amazing!) for the first time in person, really breathed life back into me, and I made a commitment to getting better on the guitar. A year later, a couple of lessons with Bryan Ewald led me to a gig with PRS artist Shane Gamble, and I played with him at 9:30 Club in DC. I respect Jimmy and Paul immensely. I live on the Shore and know a few people who work with Paul, and they have nothing but praise for you, man. And thank you both for one of my favorite shows I’ve ever seen!

Look at the camera when you're talking Paul, especially when you're "getting real!". You looked at the ground the entire time you were answering Jimmy's question and I could tell it was a tough question to answer. Let us see you when you're feeling vulnerable. It would be so much greater for all of us when we could see your face, eyes and facial expressions. You're an inspiration for many, me included, let's see it man. Smash The Day in 1/2!!

I’d love to know what JH uses for a practice amp at home. His live tone is so beautiful, especially his clean sound through the super reverb, it’s a clean sound that cuts and is so clear and has such character. I wonder if a Princeton would cut it as a practice amp. I’m sure he sounds amazing even without an amp with that picking technique....

In the age before affordable small digital tuners, unless you had a keyboards in the band, the guitars could end up being tuned a halftone flat or sharp, until you found a fix pitch instrument to tune to. I later kept a mouthorgan handy to prevent tuning too high and snapping strings. I also got a tuning fork which the guitar pickups could easily amplify.
