Grandpa and I both grew up on Long Island, New York. We still live here today. We get many comments about the way we speak so we thought we would do a Long Island Accent Check. You can also use this video as a tutorial if you are trying to speak like a native Long Islander or New Yorker. :)

I wonder if Meryl Streep, cast to play a LI matron from, say, Smithtown or Babylon, would avail yourself of your guide to the true LI accent as part of her character research: given her absolute genius with accents, that would certainly raise your profile, along with that of the Island as a whole if it ever came to pass.

Hello, Grandma and Grandpa Feral: this was a delightful look at the "Lawn Guyland" accent that I remember from growing up in central Nassau County. Though I'm a native of Brooklyn whose family moved to LI when I was 15 months old, I've somehow never really acquired the classic LI accent that your test playfully exposes, and thus had fewer verbal twirks to lose when I hosted a show on my college radio station; purrhaps having a dad who grew up in MA helped with that, even though he'd lived in NY since marrying my Astoria, Queens-born mother in 06/1952. That said, those from LI always say that I sound like a New Englander (though I'll say "aw-to" where, say, my New London, CT-born partner says "ot-to" in calling a car an auto, for example), while those who know me here in CT always claim to know that I'm a native of NYC long before I reveal that to them explicitly -- and your delightful Noo Yawk accents always make me a bit homesick for NYC (if not exactly for LI proper), and make me feel instantly at home. 😊💜👍🏼 All good to you both, and to your talented daughter, and to all the beloved kittehs -- stay safe, and stay wonderful. Long Island, represent!

Hello C.R. We hope you are doing well. Grandpa grew up in Nassau County and worked there many years. Nassau County has changed quite a bit over the years. Many nice places have closed. The traffic is awful especially if you want to go to the Roosevelt Field Shopping Mall. I have not gone in years as last time we were riding around looking for a parking spot for over a half an hour. Inside was crazy someone started a fight in the food court with chairs flying around. I told Grandpa we were leaving and never going back. Marty and Sophia are doing well. Marty loves Grandpa I keep saying it was love at first sight. Sophia is getting better but she still will hide when we bring out her food and change the water. Marty and Sophia greet each other with a kiss. If Sophia is around and she sees another Cat you should hear her howl. Many nights Grandpa went outside to see what was happening to not have her wakeup the neighbors. Take Care Love Grandma👩🏻& Grandpa👨‍🍳

@@GrandmaFeral Yes, alas, Roosevelt Field isn't what it used to be, and there are a lot of places I loved that are gone now, from Tower Records in Carle Place to a number of favorite restaurants (the Aegean East and the Azerbaijan Grill [in East Meadow] among them)...and I'm sorry you and Grandpa Feral had to witness that display of hooligans at the Roosevelt Field food court, but am glad you weren't harmed. I'm happy that Marty and Sophia are best friends and doing well; hugs to Marty (well, I'd suggest letting Grandpa deliver those 😉😺👨‍🍳🤗) and love to Sophia, who seems to take her role as guardian of your yard against strange kittehs very seriously indeed. All are well on my end, and Tarbelle sends purrs of love and warmth to all on yours; be safe, well and happy.

Grandma and Grandpa, you are what makes the world a wonderful place and people like you warm are hearts with fond memories. I am so happy I spent most of my life growing up on "Lawn Guyland" and raised my children there. I love visiting my daughter in Port Jeff, originally from Ronkonkoma and Bellmore. You're the type of people I bring over a cawfeecake from ShopRite and have a cup of cawfee with it as grandpa and I watched the Mets win a subway series over the Yankees. You guys are the best and you warm my heart with memories and I'm proud to be from Lawn Guyland, be well, be safe, much love to both of you, George

One LI-raised Mets loyalist to another, George, it's great to see you here; FWIW, your family in Bellmore were practically neighbors of my family (I grew up in East Meadow, just west of Levittown), and even today, after living in SE CT for almost a quarter of a century, one could air-drop me blindfolded into central Nassau County and I'd still be able to navigate with ease. The classic accent, as manifest by our beloved Grandparents Feral (their daughter runs the Lucky Ferals channel, which is how I became a fan of Grandma and Grandpa, FTR; check it out if you love cats), always makes me a bit nostalgic.

I have lived in Ohio since age 9, and when we would go home to Upstate N.Y. in my younger years, my cousins would make fun of my accent. I know Grandpa sounds more N.Y. than I, but I sounded like him a little! My Dad and Grandpa both worked for the N.Y.C. railroad at the start of WWII, Dad was 15 at that time, and was to young to go in the military, but he joined when he was old enough, and spent 3 years Army and 17 years Air Force, when he retired, we moved here to Ohio near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, he said he didn't want to go back to Upstate N.Y. because of the terrible winters and less job opportunities than here, and he also worked for General Electric in Syracuse, N.Y. until they went on strike, which made him decide to go back in the military, Air Force this time! I drove truck for 5 years, made many deliveries in N.Y.C., and maybe a hand full of times I made deliveries out on Long Island, I remember making a delivery 2 different times to a big marina sales business in Babylon, those people treated me like gold, and the owner and his brother wanted me to come and visit sometime and take take me fishing for blues, it was hard for me to ever get back because I worked all the time, I was very close to the point one time, but could go any farther because the didn't allow tractor trailer to go to the point! (I'll always have a soft spot for Huntington, as both the birthplace of my first beloved and the home of the Cinema Arts Center [which I knew & attended when it still billed itself as the New Community Cinema, FTR] -- and having other friends with roots there just adds to the fondness for me. This is so cute. Maybe you could do Hamlet's "to be or not to be" in the Long Island accent. Just the first couple sentences. This idea could spread. Could you find friends in Boston? Houston? A whole YT series of Welkum to Amayrica.

From Upstate NY ... very different! 💜
@semperfi818
@semperfi818 2 жыл бұрын
I'll say: culturally and accent-wise, Upstate has more in common with, say, Michigan or Ontario than it does with the Long Island in which I was raised in the 1960s and 1970s -- which is not meant as an insult, mind you; I'm a proud native New Yorker, and I dig all of the Empire State.

As in "purrpendicular to the tangent," or "within +/-2 standard deviations from the mean"? 😉📐🔬👍🏼 Sorry for the math geekery, but "normal" can be a loaded word, though I'm sure your intentions were pure -- and, yes, the majority of my classmates, neighbors, and other social contacts sounded much like the Grandparents Feral when I was growing up on LI in the 1960s and 1970s, so, yes, it was certainly the prevailing accent.

@@martensiersma3304 Yeah, you have a point, Marten: when I lived in Bergen County in the early-to-mid 1990s, I could have still been in Nassau County by the accents I heard around me (though, frankly, the diners were better in NJ by several orders of magnitude). Joey bottafuko down in massapequa or Levittown don't TALK like people from the Hamptons or Sag Harbour or like people in Smithtown, Port Washington , Northport, Port Jefferson or all the people in Stoney Brook , Patchogue, Setauket, Coram or Cold spring harbour

Preach, friend -- and one LI-raised purrson to another, you certainly know your Lawn Guyland dialects. FWIW, I was raised in central Nassau in the 1960s-1970s, and managed to dodge the stereotypical South-Shore Joey Buttafuoco patois, somehow -- though if one recalls that Lou Reed grew up in Freeport ("playing football for the Coach," no less, if his lyric is biographically accurate), I suppose that we're not stuck with the likes of the hapless Joey and Amy as LI exemplars, happily, with not every South Shore denizen sounding like a walking stereotype. (And, yes, Billy Joel is probably still Hicksville's favorite son in pop music, but let's, er, leave a tender moment alone, shall we? 😉)
