The investigation was flawed. Newsday is not reporting that the large majority of agents passed their tests with flying colors. It’s a very small percentage that failed. Today’s buyer don’t just show up to a real estate office. They go on Zillow and they tell the realtors what they want to see. They know every house that’s for sale. It’s impossible for any one agent to stop a buyer from seeing any home. The idea that an agent is able to block buyers from knowing a house is for sale is preposterous and false.

You think your going to do different but you sell a home to a Latino or Black in a white neighborhood and, Whitey will start calling your home and threatening your life and tell you, you're being watched, see how better you sleep at night after that one. But if you put a white people in a black and Latino area it's just gentrification you know it's white people making smart choices.

This happened to me in 1987 when my husband and I purchased a house in Central Islip. As the agent whose office was located in East Islip, I told her that I liked the houses on that area. She said no I’m going to take you to a neighborhood that is more “integrated”. We purchased a brand new house for $129,999 in Central Islip. I had no idea that I was being “steered” to a Hispanic and black neighborhood. My neighbors are great but our house is valued much less than the houses in East Islip, Islip, Hauppauge and Smithtown. So years later, I realized that we could have purchased a house in East Islip for the same amount as I did in Central Islip. I still own my house in Central Islip but if I were to sell I would first file a lawsuit for racial discrimination for “steering”.

@@jinsu0504 No, Sir, you do not deserve to be talked to in that manner. What you have in Long Island, in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, is trash that used to live in Brooklyn, NY. They did White flight in the 1970s from Brooklyn, NY and they went out to Long Island. It's like going backward in a time there, when you visit Long Island. You see, hear and experience exactly who those trash have been, Trash. I try not to visit there at all. You have nothing but envious trash living there. It is most telling of those residents there how they were raised out there, to be loud mouthed cowards. They are trash, they will continue to be trash. Let them have it. I lived out there for a very short time, and I can tell you they are not very brave. They are only brave when there are five or six of them, but they're not very brave at all. As a matter of fact which is even more disgusting, the Police in Suffolk County have a tendency to go with the person who is committing the crime. That is if they are of a White skin pigment and speak in a New York accent. That area is the most despicable bigoted place in the United States, which I have ever had The Misfortune to go to. I would suggest to you to relocate to areas of Westchester County, or Sullivan County. There, people are more educated, civilized, and not criminal minded.

More than 90% of the realtors tested passed the test. That’s why it took them three years. They couldn’t find enough bad realtors. This investigation was a fraud. Newsday refuses to show all the videos of the great realtors who passed the test. With these tests you will never get 100% who comply. The real story is the majority of agents are not racists. Newsday should compensate all the good agents who passed for wasting their time. Those were hours wasted on a fake buyer. Agents don’t get paid salaries. It’s not fair to over test good agents. Seriously the good ones should get paid for their time if they are found to be compliant with the fair housing laws.

Made the trip for nothing after all because she cancelled out on me claiming she needed an 'updated' letter despite the bank letter being less than 30 days old. The law enforcement agencies need to prosecute such discriminatory activities. The evidence is clear. Upon conviction fine the living xxxx out of them. The blatant, disgusting hypocrisy inherent in the various "apologies" or "explanations" or however you choose to characterize the behaviors of these real-estate agents as well as their employers is shameful at best. To me, its blatantly obvious to anyone who viewed this video that prejudice is alive and well in the USA. The only difference is that in today's world, versus previous generations, such people are sneaks because they know or should know that not only is it ethically and morally wrong, its illegal.

one thing I've learned if you want to live somewhere and are concerned with whether the schools are any good, what the crime statistics are there, etc, you can't depend on your real estate agent to provide you that information because they can't. And if ethnic/racial makeups of neighborhoods have no impact on home values why (10-15 years ago) when I was a real estate agent was that always one of the first questions potential buyers asked me "what kind of people live around here?" "are the schools around here any good?" "what are the crime rates in this neighborhood." I had to get good real quick at providing BS answers that wouldn't get me in trouble with the licensing agency.. but buyers always wanted to know those things. Always.

Buyers need to learn to do their own footwork and investigations. Assuming that minorities will, all things being equal, still have a harder time getting a loan is because they are aware of the equally complicit and racist loan industry. I think this is an excellent study and video. I do have a serious, honest question, however. There are many groups who WANT to remain in homogenous communities and I don't think there is anything wrong with it. For example Orthodox Jews want to remain within walking distances to synagogues. Latinos seem to like being near each other, particularly when many of them don't speak English well and want and need the support each other's families can provide. Other groups may feel the same way. The Amish, for example. Why is it WRONG to keep communities homogenous if that is what they want -- not for discriminatory purposes, but simply for a quality of life style that is important to them? I agree that if someone from a different group wants to move in, they should be encouraged to do so and that is fine, but what would be wrong with steering families from those particular groups into neighborhoods where they know they will feel be able to meet their particular needs? It's like the government has completely taken over everyone's lifestyles and tells them how to live and how they can't live. Neighborhoods can be homogenous without being racist or hateful. Does the law recognize this and accommodate it? In the past in this country we used to have italian neighborhoods, puerto rican neighborhoods, Jewish neighborhoods, irish catholic neighborhoods, black neighborhoods, etc. Some (perhaps much) of this was forced and that was definitely not good so to that extent I respect and believe in the fair housing laws. But some was not. Some was and is by choice. Just like people choose who they want to marrry, who they want to spend time hanging out with as friends, what careers they want to pursue, and a host of other choices, why shouldn't people be permitted to choose into what type of neighborhood they want to live? As long as newcomers aren't excluded from moving into neighborhoods (which was and I think, remains, the purpose of fair housing laws), why is it wrong to steer people INTO neighborhoods if they want to live in a place where a particular characteristic is dominant? It seems to me that the way these laws are written and enforced has terrible unintended consequences and lowers the cultural appeal and happiness of many Americans.

Thank you. I had to comment to a group that this documentary was recommended to that we seem to be forgetting that "my people", my single self included have had to move various times throughout the decades because.......things changed. You shouldn't have to but.....always be prepared to move if you don't like it, whatever it is. Furthermore, there is nothing "racist" about the desire to live around those that enjoy the same standards of peace, order, cleanliness, safety and more. Nothing racist about it at all.. And based on my experience in one particular case, it wasn't necessarily the new neighbors that caused any issues, it was their relatives from the old 'hood that came to visit on the weekends that brought their "ways" with them. I'm opposed to racist prejudice and placing people in different communities based on race, but people like me who lived in a poor area in Queens where there was crimes, gang violence, and not great education opportunities there and it was filled with Hispanics and some black people. Me and my family were lucky enough to move out of there and live in a nice suburban area in long island. Me and my family are hispanics and we don't really want to live in a Hispanic or black community because there cultures aren't really great when it comes to traditions, parenting, teaching there kids to be responsible and to work hard to achieve there dreams. Now compare to white and asian communities where there cultures teach responsibility, hard work, taking care of oneself and there family. So I want to find out if these realtors are doing this just so they can keep these nice neighborhoods nice, safe and the best or are they doing stuff like this because they're prejudice. If you want to see a neighborhood that use to be a nice neighborhood until certain group of people moved in and ruined the neighborhood look at rossdale. In the 70s it was filled with white people and the neighborhood looked nice, clean, and safe. Now rosedale looks so different today.

That’s where you’re dead wrong. You’re judging entire classes of people based on a negative experience you had living in a poor neighborhood as a child & separating whites & Asians as the “better” class because of it. I’ll tell you the flip side - I grew up in hick town in the south, predominantly white, poor, broken homes, extremely violent, & racist where most of the whites I knew were on unemployment, welfare and drugs. I am a black/Hispanic woman & being that, I have the misfortune to know what it’s like to grow up in a place where people that were doing worse things than I could even imagine doing said the same things you said on this comment about me, even though I grew up in a loving 2 parent home with immigrant parents that instilled great morals, values, and the importance of education & hard work in me on a daily basis, therefore, as opposed to judging the entire race on my negative experience as you have just done, I have a deeper understanding that there are will always be some nasty people of every race, color, & nationality, but they don’t define them as a whole. I suggest you widen your horizons and stop viewing the world from this type of narrow “woe is me” mindset that you seem to have. And as a side note, I find it extremely sad that you yourself are Hispanic & know the values we are raised on, & the values & importance we place on honest, hard work & family & yet somehow you hold on to resentment & a negative opinion about your own people based on the relatively small amount of Hispanics you were raised around compared to the MUCH larger population of us that reside outside of queens.

it's like that because of redlining. simple as this. minorities are funneled into poor neighborhoods. The problem with this statement is that as real estate agents, we know the law & we are bound by it, therefore, we are prohibited from taking certain actions that will require us to break those laws even if it is at the request of the homeowners selling in those communities. These agents, either took it upon themselves or upon the request of sellers in those areas broke those laws with their actions of discrimination, making them equally & possibly more culpable for the segregation as the population because they are the ones mainly in charge of the type of population that is able to buy & live in those areas.

The problem isn’t that. The problem is when a person has the same job, similar education, similar income, similar desires in a neighborhood and are of one race, but get treated completely differently than a person with the same profile, but is another race, that is a problem. Is having Black, Hispanic, and Asian engineers with accountant spouses along with their children going to ruin the neighborhood?
