Horeseshoeing videos is the "corner of youtube" the algorithm takes me on late nights when I get lost in random videos. I just go watch them intentionally now because I find them satisfying, but I also really respect and admire the work, knowledge and care put into the work. it's a very respectable trade! I also like seeing animals get the care they deserve ^__^

How can you tell when the heel is short enough?
@emmawillard18322 жыл бұрын
When the horn is level to the ground and equal in all directions, the horse will stand on the rim of the hoof. And the angles of the lower leg and pastern will be within normal limits which permit the joints and ligaments and tendons to work correctly. Heel too short and the horse will stand on the toe. Heels too long and running forward and under and the horse will stand on the heels. Cut the toe too short hoping to force the horse back onto the heels and that's going to be a lame horse.

If a hoof is just like a finger nail (doesn't hurt to cut it), why is the horse going to be sore for a few days? Is it because the horse has to stand differently?
@mjrussell4142 жыл бұрын
Probably because his bones, tendons and ligaments were out of alignment for so long.
@GotAnUmbrella2 жыл бұрын
@@mjrussell414 that's 100% the reason why.

It has to get used to the new angle of the hoof and thus lower joints when standing. Actually, I tend to think the majority of discomfort is a remnant of the much greater pain of having to stand on the terribly neglected hooves. The "foot" is healing.

How do wild horses cope with hoof growth?
@emmawillard18322 жыл бұрын
Equines in the wild wear the horn of the foot at about the same rate as the horn is replaced / grows down from the intersection of the coronary band to the ground. Same as digit nails and hair in all mammals.

@@emmawillard1832 Hi Emma, Thank you for the education. Regards. Mac
@emmawillard18322 жыл бұрын
@@cullercoatstunneloflove4307 It's a concept of how animals with digits use their nails on their front feet as "hands" and on their back feet for other purposes. We don't think about such things as we go through life. What most people do not know: the horse's foot -- the bones and the soft tissues which are like parts of your hands and feet -- are inside the hoof capsule. The hoof itself is like a protective "boot" which surrounds those internal structures and protects them and, as long as the hoof is not damaged, it functions to keep the internal joints and soft tissues aligned and working correctly for the horse to move easily. What you see on the outside is not the horse's foot. It's the "boot" which the horse "wears" to protect his feet and as it wears at the ground surface from the horse moving it is renewed and replaced with new keratin -- the material which makes up all nails and hair in mammals -- which grows down from the lower leg. Happy to be helpful!

@@emmawillard1832 Hi Emma, I never thought horse hoof could be so interesting. Being raised in Ireland it goes without saying that I have a great fondness for the horse. I still have a horse book that my parent gave me for Christmas. Unfortunately, I live in a very urban area now, but I still like and am interested in anything to do with the horse, donkey, and in fact any animal. Cannot understand how anyone could mistreat such a wonderful creature. Thanks again Emma and Sláinte!

Does this also happen to wild horses? Or is it just horses that are kept in pens and neglected?
@fhuber75072 жыл бұрын
Wild, they run 20 to 30 miles a day and naturally wear down the hoof. There are very few fenced pastures large enough to not need to be trimming the hooves. Almost every problem horses have... are caused by people.

I have a question. Why don’t horses go into a crush like cows and get their hooves trimmed that way?
@emmawillard18322 жыл бұрын
Horses will not put up with that business of being grabbed by a machine and turned over on their side. They will fight that and the result may be a broken leg. Or two.
@KateandBree2 жыл бұрын
Cows are completely domesticated animals. They completely rely on humans for everything, including protection from predators. Horses have only been half-domesticated and still retain fear of predators. I hope we will always keep them this way and not turn them into cows.
@leahnichol6665 Жыл бұрын
Cows are a more flexible and resilient animal. Horses are more Brittle. We had drainage ditches and the cows would get stuck in them. We could pull them out by putting a chain around their neck and slowly pull them out. If you try that with a horse you will break its neck.

On Chinese channel i seen guy that tie lips of donkey, you do something like that on horses?
@KateandBree2 жыл бұрын
This is called a twitch. This is done to create pain so bad it releases endorphins. Farriers do not control the horse when they trim; the owner does. Most owners these days DO NOT twitch as it creates a negative association after some time and it’s painful. Twitches are old school. A knowledgeable owner knows that’s it’s about the environment that creates calm horses. A calm, safe environment with a calm owner and knowledgeable and calm farrier creates positive associations which means a calm horse. The occasional treat goes far.
@isaT Жыл бұрын
These chinese channels are absolutely horrible😵 They treat the animals so brutally and often chop off too much hoof, into living sensitive tissue which hurts so badly that a twitch is used to control them. The farriers on this channel are gentle and don't cut too deep, so it doesn't hurt the horses and they stand still voluntarily.
@fhuber75072 жыл бұрын
Just unforgivable to neglect the animal letting the hoof get like that. We can see in how the animals move before vs after your work that the animals are FAR better off after getting their "nails" done. (Closest analogy to us... even if it's not the same thing really)
