How to break in your rifle barrel for long range shooting, explained.
A proper break-in is commonly reported to reduce a barrel's propensity to foul (and hence the need to clean frequently) over the life of the barrel.
Benchrest Shooter's barrel break in procedure:
This 1st procedure is the most effective for rifles on aggressive cleaning regimes where they are cleaned thoroughly after each shot cycle or field usage. In an aggressive cleaning regime full copper equilibrium is rarely attained, so break in procedures help to flatten the coppering build curve which minimizes bore condition variation immediately after a full aggressive cleaning.
Procedure (only for NEW barrels) - IF you anticipate having to employ an aggressive reaning regime.
1. Before firing rifle for first time - clean bore and chamber thoroughly
2. Fire 1 shot
3. Clean with powder solvent (Shooter's Choice) 10 strokes
4. Dry bore with patches (usually 3)
5. Run a patch with Sweets 762 copper solvent (a few drops) 1 stroke
6. Wait 2 or 3 minutes
7. Run 1 patch wetted with WD-40 to chase Sweets out
8. Run 2 or 3 clean patches to dry bore
9. Wrap a patch around a jag smeared with JB Bore Cleaning Compound -- do 10 strokes -- DO NOT allow patch to exit the muzzle until last stroke where you push it our the end and remove the patch.
10. Run patch wetted with WD-40 all the way through the bore until ALL of the JB and metal grindings are out, may take 3 or 4 times
11. Run dry patches through bore until perfectly clean
Repeat steps 2-11 of this process for every shot for the first 30 rounds.
Then, shoot 5 - clean once - for the next 30 rounds.
...only use this procedure if you NEED to employ an aggressive cleaning regime due to particularly corrosive environments OR if if there are indications your particular bore needs it.
Procedure # 2
Cu Equilibrium Break In Procedure - Recomended for ELR Precision Shooters attempting to maintain Copper Equilibrium in their bore.
Procedure:
1) Before firing rifle for first time - clean bore and chamber thoroughly
2) Fire 1st shot
3) Clean with mild powder solvent 10 strokes
4) Dry bore with patches until clean (usually 3)
Repeat process for each shot for the first 5 rounds
After the first 5 rounds, repeat cleaning process every 5 rounds for the next 25 rounds.

First of all I just want to say thank you Rex for all your hard work and the countless hours you spent making these videos. Ive watched all of them and learned so much from your teaching. I really appreciate how elaborate you are! I read some of these comments and I was genuinely disappointed in all of you who complained how much Rex talks or the way he teaches... He knows his stuff and spent a lot of time sharing his knowledge with you all... if you don't like it, don't watch it!!! You have to be negative... I wouldn't be able to make the shots I've made if it wasn't for his knowledge and the countless hours he spent making these videos... thank you so much Rex for making these for us all and I'm sorry you gotta get negative feedback from these people that wish they could shoot as good as you... God bless

This is an older video but has to be the best explanation I've seen on this subject. I have never been a fan of the first method mentioned and would never break in a barrel like that again for general use whether it be target or hunting. For me it's method number 2 or nothing at all, clean with solvent as needed (or as you prefer) and only strip copper whenever your groups open up...could be hundreds of rounds.... Thanks for the good info.

Yeah, it’s amazing how drastically attaining copper equilibrium can stabilize your groups. I've seen it over and over again: guys have a ‘dirty’ ½ moa rifle that is shooting great, they take it home and scrub all the copper out of it and then all of a sudden its a 2 moa rifle! They panic and start doing new load development, cleaning it even more aggressively - they try new scopes and eventually replace the barrel. lol What model rifle is that 7mm?

Minimal disturbance break-in should be the least destructive... but chrome lined is really a whole different animal as far as reaching any kind of consistent bore equilibrium.
@ronin6158
@ronin6158 8 жыл бұрын
+DEEREMEYER1 and Tiborasaur, in keeping with the lined or coated bore theme, I imagine a bore that is melonited or dyna-bore (micro ceramic) would be a similar animal to chrome in this regard? How does this reduce accuracy? I am contemplating dyna-bore coating my rifle but dont want to lose accuracy.

Are you sure barrel break-in even works? I have been combing the internet trying to find hard data and all I can find is anectodal evidence, nobody has tried testing it. Doing different break-ins on identical rifles and then comparing their actual performance. It would be a lot of work, but putting break in theory to the test would be a _GREAT_ video, and would get a ton of views because it's something people always argue about. Do it.

I can see from reading the comments, some people take this stuff really seriously. From personal experience, on dozens of custom barrels, i can't tell the difference between a tedious break-in and the "just shoot it" method. I go hundreds of rounds between cleanings, and usually clean out of guilt more than necessity. Nobody lose sleep over this! If you're gonna obsess over any shooting activity, it should be marksmanship.

Yes, the Cu equilibrium break-in method will most definately help minimize the effects of what many classically percieve to be a "cold bore shot". If you minimize changes to your bore between shot cycles, there will be MUCH less devaition of POI on your 'cold bore' shots.

Shooter's Choice a good one to use. I use copper bristled brushes - be sure to double check the bore erosion videos for the full story on bore ersoion - IF yo missed it. Nylon is not harder than bronze, but it's plasticity grabs onto the tiny abrasive particles left after the propellant burn and the nylon acts as the carrier of those abrasives. More on this stuff in the videos leading up to this one :-)

You clean once for each of the first 5 rounds fired and the clean once every 5 founds fired and stop after the 25th round. That's 30 not 60 rounds fired. Did I miss something? Very informative video. Rex, thank you for all the time and effort that went into this series. Being new to long range shooting these have been invaluable! I just purchased a Remington 700 Long Range in 7mm and followed the recommended 30 round minimal disturbance break-in procedure. After an additional 25 rounds using different factory ammo I started to get pressure signs (difficult to eject cartridge). I was also experiencing strong leftward pull-off during recoil. My thoughts is that this is because of excessive copper fouling due to a really rough factory barrel, but I am not sure. I would really appreciate any thoughts, suggestions or insights you may have. At this point I am considering removing all the Cu and restarting with the bench rest break-in procedure.

I really wish that more would be said about the VFG Pellet system. IMO, these are just incredible. I really can not see any other system that is so ideal. From general cleaning to copper removal and also use of JB Bore compound. I use a carbon fiber one piece rod. My chems of choice are Bore Tech Carbon Remover, KG-12 copper remover, Bore Tech Cu2++ copper remover(for its blue/no blue indicating properties). JB Bore Paste(BTW, it will ALWAYS turn black even on a 100% clean bore. It is part of it's properties), Kroloil(to lubricate the pellets when using JB Bore Paste). JB makes an awesome OTHER bore paste called JB Bore SHINE. It is much finer and much safer. It gives a mirror finish. I used the finest grit embedded BULLETS made by David Tubb(Fire Lapping). My barrel was already high quality(not had lapped however). Avoiding Tubbs more aggressive grits prevents premature chamber aging/damage.Shoot one and clean. Shoot five x3 with cleanings in betwween. A SINGLE round of his MAINTENANCE grit(Throat Management System) is used every 300 rounds. I am leary of throat errossion still, so I wait until every 500 rounds. After break in I stopped using Bore Paste and only use Bore Shine sparingly. The whole key through out the process IMO are the perfect dimension and pressure of the VFG pellets. Result is .5 MOA from a 260 dollar AR-15 barrel. Not bad.

I would simply add a drop of gun oil to the last patch you run through your bore before you set it down for a week. Thats should save you from rusting out. Also beware of fingerprints and wipe down the metal surfaces with a silicone gun cloth when you put it away.

Burrs from factory cuts can be a nuance. I have a precision AR with a 20" match fluted barrel with the 1-8 twist. Before I deployed a barrel break-in I actually discovered a small piece of rolled-over metal at where gas key hole when I held the barrel bore into the light. The barrel was new and never been shot so I wasn't exactly sure of how it would have effected my accuracy. The metal of a dental plaque scraper did the trick since it was harder. It was a tedious process but well worth it.

So if you are using a bore snake for the copper equilibrium break in procedure, would you still do 10 strokes with the solvent and brush then dry the bore with the snake? Or just put the solvent on the snake and run it through a few times? Thanks for the help.

You can use a nylon brush, it is much softer and won't score your barrel lining. Do use a 1-piece nylon coated rod and a rod guide, like Dewey's. This will add life to the bbl by introducing less wear. Also,be very careful about pulling the shoulder of the brush back through the muzzle, a lot of folks unscrew it so not to damage the muzzle, very criiticalto keep that muzzle free from dmg, and the bbl lining.

using a bronze brush on a bore guided carbon fiber cleaning rod, and hoppe's elite, would you push the brush completely out and past the barrel's muzzle before pulling it back, or would you stop with the brush centered in the muzzle and then pull back. won't either scenarios reintroduce minute steel particles back onto the bore/rifling and possibly create a problem? or is it best to push the brush completely through, remove it, start over ... ?

That would actually work pretty well, and you won't risk damage from misapplication of the abrasives. It will give you similar results to the Cu equilibrium break in procedure, which is good. You will still want to be conscious of your copper equilibrium so you can get into those stable bore conditions, so I would follow the minimal disturbance cleaning regime for maintaining your copper equilibrium as long as possible between copper remediation.

I guess my questions is: is there any downside to the coper equilibrium procedure related to barrel life? if not, it just seems much easier if nothing else given non abrasive environmental conditions. Thanks!

A great video but I'm wanting to know how to break in a new barrel on a .22LR rifle where the rounds are not copper jacketed, so there is no copper equilibrium - is there a different procedure for this?

today October 24th friday 11:53am....EST....just noticed videos became DRM protected from Android screen captures...its great how you give info out for free...KZfaq doesn't allow us to save and share...Most importantly save and share for future generations...I still have pencil and paper unfortunately that still burns at "Fahrenheit 451"...I'm very thankful for the knowledge you share...If u have a Bitcoin account share that with us so we can help support your efforts. Two years ago I got into shooting as a sport and this is amazing information full of physics, meteorology, good general science knowledge that would have made schooling more interesting...Thanks Jeff NJ

Rex, Great series!!! So very generous with your experience. As an old dog, I really appreciate the lessons. Love the math! Soo, I just received my new Larue Tobr. It's been test fired at factory, their comment was to just shoot high quality match grade ammo for 200-300 rounds. No other break in is necessary......was built to shoot sub MOA out of the box. I'm interested in your thoughts.

That works very well to remove grease and crud, but beware that it also takes off most finishes as well.

You can run a snake through it before you set it down and store it, but I would save the full cleaning until your groups or MV spreads let you know you need it. Minimal disturbance is the key.

Great Vid's Do I need to tract my muzzle velocities during the break-in and when they stabilize I will know when I have reached the equilibrium state where I can do my load development, then when the velocities start rising more rapidly and my groups start to get erratic I will know it's time to start over? I am shooting a used savage 30.06 that I have no idea of how it was cleaned or broke in and a Savage 22-250 heavy that I have shot about 40 rounds thru. Thanks

I just bought a new 7mm rem mag x bolt from browning, they recommend shot one clean carbon/powder out, then clean all copper out. Repeat shot one clean one for first ten. I have noticed that there is some copper build up between some of the rifling towards the end of the barrel, even after I clean with sweets 762. Iv shot 8 rounds so far. I guessing this copper that's being left over is going to be part of the Cu Equilibrium.

how does the lapping compound work if all you use to stroke the bore with is a cloth patch? I don't see how a patch is going to be able to do any kind of lapping even with an abrasive compound?

We won't ignore the copper, we will be keeping a very close eye on it as we proceed. We will want to ensure that we only perform our copper remediation when necessary - and when we do, we will want to know exactly how that copper removal will affect our MV variations so we can correct for it before we shoot. I would only perform copper removal if you see eratic performance or a MV trend that varies significantly from your current trend. More on how to keep track of all this in a coming video.

Fantastic video, thank you. Once the break in procedure has been done (the 2nd one in the video,) how often should we then clean put rifles? Every 40 to 60 shots? When we do clean, after the break in, should we use just a powder solvent or a copper solvent and redo the process to achieve copper equilibrium?

I have a question about the copper equilibrium break in procedure. Can I start developing my hand-loads while I break the barrel in? Not trying to hit anything, just shooting over the chronograph.

if I;m using a boresnake and going w/ the CU method, do I need to apply solvent to the boresnake? Or do I just run the boresnake through w/ no solvent?

Brother I just started cking out some of your earlier videos on rifle fundamentals, optics, range and use all around. Not only am I IMPRESSED,but also amazed at how much of a pisspoor shooter I current am. I own several high powered rifles 300 338 ,325 short mag and several others. Learned a tremendous amount on longer shot skills. I'm going out to the farm and Hine in some with proper ballistic sheets. I just recently 3 days ago Aqui red a 308 in a platform. Bull barrell was just ordered along with a few other calibers. I. Hoping to get really good at 600 to 800 meters with 3 of them . I have always loaded my own shells very specific to within a tenth on grain. Do you have a optic suggestion for this 308.I want this optic based on long trajectry (for me) . As I would have to be taught to shoot as you can . Truly freaking awesome to watch btw. I'm just wanting all my needs in a row for when I need to do what needs to be done. I am a GODLY man and I know where I will go when I leave the flesh. But we all need to be ready for what's coming. It's all in GodsWord. Psalms 144:1. God bless you and all you do for your community and those that got your back. For brotherhood is what is needed to fight all evil. Brothers in GOD,BROTHERS IN ARMS,AND BROTHERS OF FAITH. .I'm slowly but surely trying to do the right thing and give GOD PRAISE THROUGH ALL,but I have a severe anger issue with certain ignorant, ANTI AMERCAN, AGAINST GOD MOVEMENTS LIKE N.F.A.C,AND THE PRICKS OF B.L.M. IM NOT RACIST BUT SEEM TO BE PUSHED FOR A SEGREGATED STATE. I WILL BACK GOD,MY,FAMILY AND THE FOUNDATIONS OF OUR FORFATHERS. STRONG,FIRM,FOLLOW THROUGH

Great video! But I'm a little confused which one would fit me best. I'm getting a Remington 700p 308 and plan on shooting 100 yards on average than every now and then going out to 300-600 yards. Once I move west I plan on 500-1000 yards on average. By the way I am new to precision rifles so this is my first scoped rifle.

as you went from clean bore to seasoned bore how much muzzle velocity change did you see before yours leveled off

sez i ... therefore, it would make best case sense to push out and remove (& CLEAN) the bronze brush for the entire first cleaning series, for every pass. after that, i'd think pushing through just past the muzzle would be the better compromise as all if not most of the new barrel rifling will be passably steel debris clean by then. always keeping the bronze brush engaged in the rifling lands insures that the rod itself will have less tendency to touch the rifling/bore.
