Ballistic tables are an intergral part of the long range rifle system. In order to make the shot you will have to know exactly where to index your optic. In this video, Rex introduces the topic of long range external ballistics and shows you what ou can expect to learn in the next portion of the series.

Yup. That’s the best way to do it. Be advised that that initial point of intersection changes a little bit as you dial up and down, you can reconfirm this point on paper at close range simply by dialing in the various LR solutions in 100m increments and moving the paper till you are 'on'. Of course you can figure this out mathematically as well, but generally you’d still want to be shooting though a keyhole shaped opening, so you can see through it.

T' Rex- Another Great series part! The Ballistic Tables Charts appear to have advanced quite nicely, as they look better in this video, than any of the other tables I remember seeing in the previous 60 parts of the series. I was also fortunate enough to have some time to watch both parts of the 4th Commandment videos. It is pleasure listening and learning from/with you on both topics. Which many may assume to be opposite sides of the "Spectrum", yet- I believe share similiarities beyond chance:)

I will make the calc forms available very soon. I will show you guys how to figure out the constants using the ballistic data we gathered. Yes, they are very much caliber/BC/load specific. The tables provided should be a great way to go in most conditions. I usually just use the tables. Only when its a really weird or extra long shot will I bust out the old calc forms.

Both, use will depend on what data is provided by the bullet manufacter. If they give you G1, you must use G1. If they give you the option to use eithert G7 or G1, then go ahead and use G7 for most LR profile bullets, if you can. Full explanation coming soon :-)

I go straight for 100 yards or meters, but it shouldn't matter much. Bullet drop is negligible at 100m with a modern centerfire cartridge. The important thing is to make sure that your rifle is immobile during boresighting. A little accidental shift while scanning between the two will cause problems.

Measure from the center of the tube as it lies in between the front and the rear rings. Even if you were off - a 20MOA (1/3 of a degree) cant won't add up to be an easily measurable variation in height over the length of the scope.

Great info as always, Rex. I find that I am always questioning my calcs when I enter my atmospheric conditions. My A.O. goes from 1000' to 1800'. Local range right now is 1205' above sea level, 72.3 F, pressure 30.12, 99% humidity (super foggy). Some ballistic calcs modify temp/pressure/altitude automatically. It can be maddening.

Thought about it... Ammo and ambient kept at same temp, so I do match ambient on calculator to ammo temp. Duh. Just wasn't sure if it would compound things. Got some funky results otherwise. Thanks.

Howdy! It may be wise to at least do a cleaning before firing and maybe at least one or two more after the first few shots are fired just to be safe. It will take a few shots for the freshly cut chamber to round-off all the new sharply machined edges, particularly in the throat region.

G'day Rex, and peace be unto you. Thankyou for your resource, I have really enjoyed your videos and appreciate the work you have put into it, cant say thanks enough. Down here in Australia, we have a lot more difficulty getting the optics you talk about in the affordable and of the spectrum but that's something i'll have to work through. my question is about an M98 I've had rebarrelled with a "near new" one my smith had, do I need to run in this barrel considering its only rechambered? cheers

I was wondering the same thing, since I bore sited in the past at 100 or 200 yards and it's always got me on paper...going to 25 like going backwards...for me but if you don't have the 100 yard range to start with, 25 meters or yards makes sense.

Thanks Rex. Couple of questions. How much verification on the different temps is "enough"? Right now, obviously, the temps are fairly constant due to the season. Do you just keep adding to the data card then as you shoot in various conditions? How then is the rest of the data adjusted to reflect the actual hard numbers? Of my MANY weak spots, spread sheets and related software are at the top of my list. I know you stated that you weren't going to post a template, but would you reconsider?

Hey Rex, on your manual calc form, is this available? also on the constants used, is that from any ballistics program, is it caliber specific bullet's BC specific? Or should we not worry with the manual calc form and just use the very awesome ballistic tables you developed? Thanks man Steve

I never understood coriolis effect. Even though the bullet is no longer attached to the earth when it's fired, shouldn't it have the same direction of momentum that the earth has since it is fired from a moving position fixed to the surface of the earth? Wouldn't it be like throwing a ball from one side of a plane to the other where the ball still flies straight despite the high rate of speed?

Rex I know you field tons of questions but I'm putting tables together and hoping you can help. I began by entering MV and leaving ambient temp constant (70 degrees, my zero temp). Should I be raising the ambient temp on the calculator along with my mv's from the burn rate curve? It seems obvious to do it but I'm just curious if it would become compounded by essentially adding two curves to the ballistic table. I hope I'm wording this correctly. Thanks Rex even if you can't get back to me.

What do you use for a ballistic value? G1 or G7. I got some bullets with an advertised BC of .415 (Hornaday .308 150gr SST)but the calculators say that they have a different value. Also how many shots do you use to measure group size?

Hey Rex, I have been looking at AR 30A1BT338 which has a 10/1 twist. The 300 gr. has a BC over .700... the bullet I would like to shoot. I was wondering what the twist is in that Surgeon you shoot. it's a little pricey for me. Your teaching is the best. I know you put a lot in in this. I also like your Bible teaching. We may differ on some points of theology but no problem, Jesus is still Lord of all.

Is that an actual example of a temperature MV curve? Does something like a 243 or a 308 really vary as much as 200fps from zero to 100 degree's? .... According to the chart used as an example the MV varied as much as 60fps between 40 - 70 degree's ... That is the normal temperature range in many places from sunrise to sunset... So that would mean you could see wide variations in MV depending on what time of day you make the shot... Do the short and fat (308) cartridges vary less then the long and skinny (300wm) ones?... are there certain cartridge design attributes that make this more or less of a factor? .... Planning and compensating for all these variable's is a bit more involved then i had imaged...

Let's suppose that someone bought a scope which had a MIL reticule and MOA turrets (I believe that S&B make a 5-25x56 PMII scope with this setup) before they had the benefit of the viewing this series of videos. I don't know, perhaps they thought that MOA gives smaller steps that MIL and so would give a more precise adjustment or something. With the aid of EXCEL or programmable calculators, would it not be possible to factor in such a setup with relative ease? After all while it is an extra final step, it's just some constant... Or am I missing something?
