Thanks for purchasing your headers from us! Installing headers on a Pontiac application is a tough job in most cases and are a very tight fit due to the angle of the exhaust ports. We appreciate the positive feedback!

Yes, the “Short style” header will give you a good low end boost and will be the easiest install while keeping you emissions legal as well!

Neither header type is actually an option for your Impala due to a set not being produced by any company we carry. But I have personally installed a set of Hooker Super Competition shorty headers on a 1995 Impala SS with very good performance increases. The correct set for your vehicle is part # HOK-2063HKR ($399.95 painted) and HOK-2063-1HKR ($625.95 coated).

This makes them more desirable for a towing or 4x4 off road application when being used on a low compression engine that has a very low and narrow power band. It's very important to not only look at the engine but also the vehicle type/use when selecting a set of headers for this reason.

I just bought a 2002 Z28 LS1 to build with my son. One of the first changes will be headers but now I've come across a Trickflow header/full exhaust. I want to be up around 450-600whp when I'm done. It's just a father/son project so I have time. I'm in NY so I can't have a check engine light on for state inspection. I want to end up with a daily driver type of a beast.

Yes, most times that is true. The exception is some Mustang headers; there are equal length versions available.

Many times factory tubular exhaust manifolds are crimped pretty small in some places for bolt clearance or ease of manufacture or assembly. An aftermarket header, even a shorty, puts emphasis on flow for power production so, yes; they will make more power than a factory tubular manifold.

Yes, long tube headers will fit your 1978 Camaro and there are many versions available. The most cost effective set available is a set of Summit brand headers and the part number for these is SUM-G9001 ($109.95).

There will be modifications with these headers to make them fit an existing exhaust system, including the factory exhaust. Pacesetter sells off-road extension pipes to delete the catalytic converters if you are racing the car. That part # is PSM-82-1165. A computer reflash will be required to do so of course! The headers do include O2 sensor extension wires since the O2’s are relocated down to the collectors.

Patriot Exhaust offers a mid-length or “Clipster” header for this application. There are a few different part numbers depending on the transmission and whether they should be coated or not. We agree. If your Falcon has a Windsor engine in it, the only other option is a set of standard full length headers from Hooker. The part number for these headers is HOK-6102HKR but with a price tag of $449.95 these are also not a cost effective alternative.

Long tube headers are most often used on a true dual exhaust system with two mufflers so, yes there would be a big difference in sound. The floor pan configuration and factory suspension ride height on your car makes it near impossible to run a true dual exhaust.

Dynatech headers will likely perform and fit best on your Camaro. The part number for the correct set is DTC-740-11210 ($584.99). These have a 2 1/2" collector instead of the standard 3" collector. This should give you the little bit of extra ground clearance you need.

While exhaust sound is mostly affected by the type of muffler being used, it wouldn’t be completely honest to state that headers don’t have some affect as well. There are many variables involved here from cubic inch, camshaft specs, ignition firing order, pipe diameter etc, etc.

Due to ground clearance and low end torque production being desirable in your Rock Crawler vehicle application, we suggest going with a set of shorty headers. This header type should yield the best results in your specific application.

cool i got some long tube header from you guys, great header for the buck, you are right i had to bring the header up from the bottom at the same time lowering the moter down 1969 428ci pontiac motor in a 1979 firebird man it looks cool with that tight fit! like how did he do it! lol like the vid man!

It also depends on your intake. I have a trickflow track heat intake so it’s better set up for long tubes.but if you have the street heat intake then go with shorties.

Long tubes on those cars without any lowering can be questionable at times when you consider curbs or speed bumps or pot holes. It’s highly suggested with your amount of lowering that you consider Mid-lengths or shorties!

would I get more performance out of my 5.3L with shorty headers vs stock manifolds ? or would long tube be best I have true dual straight pipes as it is im just worried about o2 sensor wire and such with running long tubes btw my truck is a 2008 chevy Silverado z71 if that helps thanks.

Any header is going to help make more/better power throughout the entire power range when compared to the stock restrictive exhaust manifolds. With that being said, not every motor responds the same way to headers. Each motor, whether it be Ford, Chevy or Dodge is designed and breathes differently.

A Flowmaster Super 44 is a loud muffler by design, the only thing louder while still using mufflers would be to run a pair of the Flowmaster “Race Muflers” in a dual exhaust system. Please let us know if you have any more questions. Thanks for watching!

I'm curious and I would appreciated your opinion... I have third gen Trans Am, 350 TPI Crate engine, lt4 cam and some other mods, around 400 hp and I will put true dual exhaust. I have on my mind long tube headers and H pipe. Long tube gives more power in mid range and H pipe is better for low end torque so I believe that would be OK setup for my car??

But because long tube headers and short tube headers deliver each cylinders pulses into the exhaust pipe at different times, there will be a slight difference in sound; although, the average drivers ear will most likely not be able to hear the difference. Thanks for watching!

I have a bad manifold on my 88 f150 with a 5.8. Is it worth putting on a set of shortys or should I just replace the manifold? I really love this truck and dont mind upgrading it. Its still cheaper than new truck payments

Whereas, a high compression engine/vehicle combination will benefit much more from a long tube. But, this is not to say that long tubes would not make more overall power/torque on the low compression than the shorties, because they almost always will. It's more of a question of at what point in the power band would you like to see the power made? Shorties typically improve the torque production earlier in the power band than long tubes but the increases fall off much quicker.

For top end horsepower an X pipe would be best. As for install, a local exhaust shop could do the install in an hour providing the existing exhaust isn’t too rusty!

I'm building an 84 Dodge w350 four wheel drive with a 360 la engine and I'm having a hard time deciding whether to get long tube headers or shorty headers I'm building the truck for pulling and mudding what would be the best application for what I'm building

Nice clips from a Summit customer. Should have mentioned when mounting from underneath in some instances, you may have to undo motor mounts and raise or tilt motor to install, but that's what directions are for. Right? Full tubes have equal pipe lengths which balance and time pulse phase for all four cylinders into collector.

Had to make a small notch in the frame to accommodate my long tube headers and also relocate the fuel tank. It and 81 dodge with a mild 360. Any of you guys looking to run full lengths make sure you're prepared to make some modifications to your vehicle cause no matter if the design is specific for your vehicle you'll most likely have to modify something to install. Luckily mine isn't a daily driver so the frame notch is not a big deal.

Hi greg washington, Due to more tubing in a long tube header, it’s understandable that they would be a little more labor intensive to install. In some cases you may have to remove the starter and oil filter to achieve adequate clearance for installation.

So to say that a short header is best or worst for your application would have to come with dyno testing as proof to back it up! Do your research before buying. Contact a manufacturer directly and ask for dyno results. Check the internet, there are lots of independent comparison tests being done everyday that may help shed some light for you.

Your video really explained a lot I was debating on getting long tubes or short tubes I went with the short less work less money but question the headers I brought has holes for the o2 sensors so do I still need my cat converters or can I get the converters that doesn't have the holes for the sensors or can I just run straight pipes thanks in advance

Hi Jerrell Brooks, If you have emissions testing that you must comply with, then the O2 sensors and catalytic converters must be re-installed.

i got the hooker shorty headers on my 97 lt1 and they are a pain in the ass to install especially on the left bank. but they do sound great. also another prob with the hooker shorty is the number 8 cylinder spark plug wire boot to the plug is really close to the header and has dried out and fried the boot to my MSD wire. if u want all power and u have no emission go with long tubes. with O2 simulators for ur rear O2 sensor and a custom exhaust.

I have a 01' ford f-150. I have true dual, and dual glass packs I want the long tube headers but I'm afraid they will interfere with my exhaust, any help would be appreciated

Header manufacturers try to improve on factory designs by increasing internal tube diameter and minimizing the amount of turns the exhaust has to travel through. They may also try shortening turn radiuses and or making all tubes the same length (as much as possible) in order to equalize flow from all cylinders. Bottom line, air does not like to turn, nor does it do it well.

For the best low end torque production, we suggest using a set of shorty headers.

To avoid clearance issues etc is there a compromise between the long and short tubes? Like a mid tube header? I have a 1980 z28 camaro I plan on doing a lot of work to. Also will there be a problem with fitting to the brodix ik200's?

I have a 68 Camaro 327 with Hooker Comp long tubes. They sound sweet but ground clearance has become an issue since she's been dropped a little. If I'm not willing to go shorty can you suggest the hands down best header for my car!!

I put summit shortys on my 08 v6 silverado and had lost 1 hp and picked up 2tq, after a retune i picked up 14hp and 6tq If anybody wants the benefit of headers truly, i suggest you get your vehicle tuned for it. Im happy i put shortys on, that being said i would have gone longtubes knowing that my cats would clog and i would have to cut them in the first place lol.

I have a 5.7 Lt1 looking to build it cause it doesn't have many miles.Of course for a quick boost bolt on headers were my first choice...what would be better on the lts..i want more dead stop speed so are shorties best?

I just got a set of bbk shorty headers in for my 5.3 vortec, but the thing is I had planned on getting the long tubes(they were a gift from a friend). Will I still see gains with the shorties?

+SuperAngus52 , Yes, shorty style headers have a flow increase over stock manifolds but, without a new tune in the ECU, whether by use of a hand held or a dyno session, you may not realize the most power output possible.

So I have a low clearance vehicle. From your videos, I calculated I need a 2.5" collector tube. Does the collector tube under the car have to be round tube??.....or can I construct an oval but flatter collector tube with the same square inches area? Thanks

I'm new in this I recently bought a 2011 chevy colorado 2.9L and I'm trying to make some upgrades so what kind of headers do u suggest for my pickup truck I already put a hp shift kit to the transmission and a posi track lock to the rearend thanx

I think you sold me on the shorty cause i'm not really focused on performance. I've efficially accpeted the fact that my '97 k1500 isn't gonna run like a viper lol considering that, which would give you the most benifit as far as sound? Will the 2 create a sound different from eachother or is it mostly a common sound?

I think you may have that backwards. Long tube headers give you high end power because the Scavenging is more stable and doesn't take effect until it gets into the high range. The reason shorty headers we're good at low RPMs because the Scavenging effect is actually accelerated because the Scavenging effect is more pronounced because of the collector being closer to the combustion chamber. And it draws stronger. The problem is is that at higher RPMs it tends to get muddled in the fact that unless they are equal length tubes. They can sometimes get in their own way. And you lose some of that Scavenging effect at the higher RPMs. But if you're going for a streetcar, you still get 97% of the effect of a long tube header with Shorty's and they fit a whole lot easier. If you would add within about 8 in of the exhaust port a crimp, called a fueling crimp named after the man who devised it. It would help to reduce reversion into the intake as well on cams that have a lot of overlap. And you'll never see it in the horsepower and torque numbers. You might actually see higher torque numbers. So I think part of your explanation is backwards when it comes to long tube vs. Short tube. The effect is the same but the reason for the effect is opposite of what you explained.

With my 1983 ford f1504x4, the long headers were ridiculously expensive made to order. I went with manifolds, not considering shortys, which would have been the best performance/value option.

It's not really possible to supply accurate dyno numbers when it comes to a product like this. Different engine types and configurations will respond uniquely to each header type making power in different areas of the power band. For example, a lower compression engine will respond more favorably to the shorty header in most cases when it comes to actual vehicle performance.
