The best way that I've seen Shorts work best is as a highlight or compression of longer content. For woodworkers, they sped up the construction w no explanation: board to finished product. Usually this is a teaser: "Full Project on Friday!" Then the full video discusses the what's, why's, how's & wherefore's. On a talking head channel, they take the top 2 or 3 tips and just give that in the Short, which teases the longer vid w more explanation, more tips, etc. I became a fan of Simon Sinek from a Short. The clip was his answer to a single question ... which lead to the full interview ... which lead to binging his interviews ... which lead to subscribing to his channel.

I love that you've explained this distinction Nick, I see so many online business owners run to IG reels or tiktok or shorts because they're told or see content creators getting more views on those forms of content. BUT not all views are created equal. If you're creating content to be discovered as a content creator or even building brand awareness as a business then make the most of the short form content, but if you're creating content to attract warm leads to your business then long form content is the way to go.

Yt shorts is a good way to get new people to subscribe to you like I made a video and got 3.1k views on the video and I’ve learned that hashtags do help sometime for normal videos,like one of my videos got 21k views,which is amazing. It would be interesting to compare the video that got views against ones that haven't. If you look at how people responded to the each you'll probably discover that it wasn't a hashtag that made the difference.

KZfaq Shorts are in a different section on KZfaq, it's a scroll function so yeah, endless views sometimes. However I am very happy that long term content is dominates KZfaq since it's a search engine. I only make a few KZfaq Shorts since it does bring in some views or subs but I would say 1/4 Shorts and the rest is all long term. Awesome video as always Nick! Also love the colour choice for the thumbnail in solidarity with Ukraine (If that was your intent lol )

I dont often do shorts , I have however been trying to shorten up my long videos as attention spans are getting shorter and shorter. It's difficult when it's a How To channel to find the right balance. You dont want to come accross as gatekeeping but you also can't always put up a 40 minute video that people will skip around and watch 8 minutes of.
@Elloyuetm

@bittersweetindustryexecutive Жыл бұрын
@Raes Turquoise Turtle Than simply cut up your vids in, say, two (or more) segments when dealing with one topic. This happens all the time on youtube as well, when a long video is being interrupted for one, two, sometimes even three or four times for the purpose of advertising. Simply go over your vid and its structure and try to come up with a structure that does the job of covering whatever topic is being discussed AND lends itself to be cut up in multiple segments. This can be done in a natural way as well. If people have no clue about the subject your discussing and really wanna learn something it wouldn't be a bad idea to do it this way. First they get to know you, your style of talking about a certain topic. And a couple of vids later they would feel as though they've actually learned something from you. As you've taken them on a little how-to journey that goes a little deeper or touches on different aspects of the same topic. You can announce it all beforehand by saying: "Just to make it clear, in this video, we're mainly touching on this aspect of 'how to...". In part #2, it's gonna be...And, finally, in part #3, it's all about...So if you only want the basics, just watch #1. If you want to learn how to apply all of my tips & tricks in every situation, watch #1 and #2. And finally, If you want an in-depth all-in overview and deep understanding of 'how to...', then I'll advice you to watch all three. This is also a good way to not 'scare' people with short attention spans off, 'cause they kinda know what to expect now. This imo is a big reason also why some people snap out of a long vid (besides the short attention span): They feel as though they have to commit a substantial chunk of their time (in their mind) without having any clue what to expect. Hope this helps you somewhat. Good luck! Cheers!

I started doing shorts the beginning of this year, I was at 119 subscribers at that time. In just under two months I’ve jumped up to just under 750 subs. It took me EIGHT months to get those first 119 subs & 10K views. Now I’m over 250K views. GAME CHANGER FOR ME. It seems about 50% of my shorts flop, the rest get at least 1K views. Related (slightly) but I really love the thumb for this video. I sense some changes are coming in terms of thumbnail style, but it's pretty cool when the thumbnail style change is THIS obvious. On a much more related note, I'm noticing that shorts can sometimes tend to go better if the shorts themselves are already good. That way, yes, the shorts are forced onto people, but if the content of the shorts is worth watching, people WILL let the shorts play. No one is forced to watch a regular video which is why we rely so heavily on a thumbnail and title to draw someone in to want to click, which is much harder. Shorts gets the hard part done (the click) the next hard part is keeping them watching. Shorts are SUPER easy to skip if you get bored, so I still believe the watch time and retention from shorts is similar to long from (the audience is giving your content a chance) and if they like the video, the retention graph will show it. Shorts definitely wins in that regard. But I still have shorts that are performing abysmally so it's not ALL sunshine and rainbows, especially if KZfaq don't put your shorts into the shelf. In terms of "views"... what qualifies as a "view"? is it still the 1 second minimum or whatever the minimum watch time to qualify as a view? Or is shorts different in that regard? "If people don't continue to engage with your content, KZfaq will put other people's content in your place and stop putting your content out there" this is what's happening to my content now (the first 30 days in my impressions analytics shows this. Impressions analytics from 2022 show the content just isn't being pushed out like it was in 2018) And the question THERE is.... even when you try better practices... you try to improve your thumbnails (consistently 3%-5% nothing has changed there much), you try new tactics with titles (I still need a lot of work on that) and you try new editing to make videos shorter and more consumable... but it all results in KZfaq not trying to push your content out, because other people's content that performed better is now replacing your content.... Does this mean it's near impossible to get any new traction without just starting a new channel? I feel like I've shot myself in the feet with just having "boring" "Bad" content (10% retention longer form, 30-40% short form) like... what's the point in recording a 30 - 60 minute video (raw footage), putting the effort into editing it down so it's more "consumable" only for to it still only get 10% retention.... (I remember some bigger channels in the past (not Nimminati) would say exactly that... "why bother making a video if 90% aren't watching?) It's incredibly disheartening. 2018 was more reliant on watch time... 10 minutes of a 60 minute video still meant 10 minutes of watch time per video, meaning content was still getting recommended, vs 2021 when 10 minutes of a 60 minute video = 10% retention.... retention being more important than watch time = nope... no more recommended by KZfaq either get good or give up, and after 7 years of trying to make the videos more watchable with similar results in my retention, I feel like being on the verge of giving up (luckily there's new movies inspiring me to want to draw even if my views and retention are tanking)

I've been making YT shorts for a month, at least 3 videos a day! It helped me get a lot of views and quite a few subscribers! Now I've been doing a lot longer forms of content! More Let's Plays/ Walkthroughs, and like you said they are getting a handful of views! But, it could be a case of the video will eventually get picked up! The game I was playing was an Indie game, that had recently came out! Made the Title and thumbnail to go along with it! The thing is about YT, is learning to be patient, and to also stop comparing myself to others, as it can be a bit demotivating at times!

It's interesting because it's not really feasible to put an ad on 3 minute or less video and it would be hard to insert a sponsor typically for those 1 - 3 minute shorts when talking about the sponsor itself might range from 30 seconds to 1 minute. I just think of shorts as a way to grab attention and transfer your audience to long form content. Who knows might happen!

Hi bro, is that possible if you make a video on how to get viewers from overseas? Im trying to expand my channel internationally, but it seems it doesn’t *yet* get the result I expected. My channel has over 200k subs with an average views of 50-100k+ per video :) Thanks.

Somehow I created a short that while it hasn't gotten a million views it just broke 204k after being posted mid November. 57% Browse, 24% search and 17% from the short shelf. It is also responsible for over half of my subscribers right now. Since I injured myself a few weeks back I haven't been able to record or post anything and now it is dying. Hopefully when I am healed up and able to start creating again it will pick up.

I love getting views but it's kinda depressing when shorts hit 4K but normal videos hit 30 views...hell, that's on a good day

Here's what I have been doing for when my shorts appear in suggested/home/etc. I have a long format video that I post and then I make a short from that. I use the same thumbnail for both but put "Trailer" across the one for the short. Then my title for the long format, for example, reads "Mini Shotgun Shells Recipe", then the title for my short version reads "Full video in description | Mini Shotgun Shells Recipe". Then I put the link to the long format in the description of the short. I do this because I feel if my short is shown somewhere outside of the shelf, the viewer is probably looking for a full video on the recipe, not a sub 60 second clip. I feel like it would keep those people from just leaving and looking elsewhere for the content. Do you think that's a good strategy? It doesn't seem to affect views on the shelf. About 80% of my shorts get picked up and I get a decent amount of views usually.

My experience is actually the opposite. I get views on long form, but not shorts. Been that way since they rolled out the shorts in the US.

Shorts are definitely a subjective argument, I've had some of my shorts spike at over 34k views, the most successful one was a grainy video I shot on my phone maybe 10 years ago of kneading bread before I knew anything about videography and people loved it! My long form bread content had views in the hundreds, the thing I took from both experiences is that for my niche it needs to be a sweet spot of moving slow enough to digest the tutorial I'm giving but fast enough to not lose the viewers engagement. For example, I'd time lapse 10 minutes of stirring into a few seconds but lose the audience,now the second I begin to stir something I'll have a graphic that says "X amount of minutes later" and then a blur so the whole process takes a couple of seconds. All things that I've learnt in my time from watching the KZfaq gurus, although they all say in terms of winning the click for a content related question, there's always one guru who wins the click 😉

Hi. I started to watching your videos not because of monetization but because i am new at trying this and i really do not know anything about the process. I am learning how to present myself and my videos which is more valuable to me at the moment so thank you. My comment here also proves don't give up on your videos either look a year later and still getting a view

What’s funny is that it happens in reverse for me. I actually got clicks on my longer videos and 0 on my short. I did experience a fluke where my first short that was just a quick short notice really saying nothing much other than I’m experimenting and I got 700 views before it was pulled and went dead. Shorts I posted after all never gained a view again. It was really weird.

Hi Nick, I understand the reason for zooming in and out during the video, it's a cool way to "hide" cuts so it will look more fluid, but I would advice you not to zoom it too much and too often, specially in videos this short. It both distracts from what you're saying and also makes it harder to focus on your face because the change is too big and our eyes kinda lose track of your eyes for a second. Nice video BTW, very clear and useful information
@APlusRussian

I think what you are describing - pattern interrupts - is kind of the point. People's attention spans just aren't as long as they used to be, and these techniques are necessary to actually keep folks engaged - for longer.

@DanCreaMundos

@@APlusRussian yes and no, I know why he's adding those cuts, it helps him mark his words, what I meant is that he's probably zooming in too close, and because of that his eyes end up in a different position which forces the viewer to pay too much attention to the video instead of the words. It's better not to be too drastic and keep the eyes relatively in the same area of the video, that way the viewer won't need to focus again. You get what I mean?
@APlusRussian
@APlusRussian 2 жыл бұрын
@@DanCreaMundos I do get what you mean. I also think that it's _because_ viewers have to refocus on the eyes, they are _more_ likely to stay engaged. I'm sure there's research on this that Nick is following 😉

Good stuff. I am still torn however on whether I should integrate the short content into my regular channel, or create a seperate channel for them that then points people to my regular stuff. In the fighting game niche, short "highlight" style clips do really well, usually bringing in well into the thousands of views, but I'm just not sure if I should "disrupt" my regular stuff, so to speak.

I have the exact oposite problem, most of my bottom 10 videos in terms of views are my shorts. There's been two or three that get a small boost, but even those aren't even in my top 50%. I think maybe it's just my style that really isn't suited for short form content.
