Good tip on going bottom to top for better visibility.

Well I finally tried them. I had to watch this video a couple of times but lining up the lines finally clicked. I did do them top down because I only have a 5 foot frame so the quilts or projects get clamped on the frame and float over the front bar. It will be interesting when I try this on a larger quilt. I may have to load the quilt sideways. But I'm very impressed with the rulers.

My partner bought this set a couple of months ago and this is the first video I've watched where you use the templates. We've had a sit-down longarm for awhile, and just picked up a stand up longarm and frame. I am thinking about using these templates on my first quilt. I just had a thought about the design of the templates (forgive me, but I do a bunch of 3D printing and CNC hobby stuff and I think critically about these things.) I noticed you using the smaller rulers to travel along the previous 11 inch curve. Seems like you could split the bottom of all the tempates (except maybe the 3") so that half was straight as currently, and the other half was enough of an 11" curve to travel with. [Hard to explain with words...] Anyway, not a flaw as such - just an idea. Love your videos!

Hey there! Thanks for your comment. I do know what you’re saying. I also designed this set for curved crosshatching and I wanted the full length. But I might reconsider. This set has not been updated for several years and I’ll definitely take your suggestion to heart. Thank you!

Thank you for doing this Michael. I have done several quilts top to bottom, but I see how bottom to top would be easier. Just not sure how good my basting skills are.

Hi Nancy! I understand completely. At least you have choices, but yes I know that basting first can be a pain - but at least it gets the job done and then stitching this design out is easier. But really - whatever worlks best for you is the best way to go. So glad you are using the set! Happy Quilting! Michael

Hands down, going from bottom to top is way better than top to bottom. I can see the marking lines so much easier. Great product! Thank you!!!! (Using Long Arm - APQS Millie)

I am going to try my new rulers for the first time so I watched both videos. Top to bottom and bottom to top. What I see, as a still new long-armer, is that from top to bottom it does not look as comfortable to hold the rulers and be able to clearly see the markings. For me, I think I will try bottom to top and maybe let you know how I did later. Thank you, Michael for showing both ways.

I purchased the rulers about a month ago. I have watched both videos and will try the bottom up design not because it might be easier but, I like the orientation of the fan from bottom to top, curves are at the top. Going top top to bottom, curves are at the bottom.

I ordered a set for my sister too. She bought a used 22" from JoAnn Gemmill. I finally got in the rhythm by the 3rd row left to right. My brother runs marathons and he has made a t-shirt quilt top from his tops. We may teach him how to quilt also. Thank you!

Perhaps when Covid calms down more I'll go down to teach there again. Keep in touch and let me know how things are going! -Michael

Thanks for posting this & explaining why you prefer to work in that order, bottom to top. I think people are just fuzzy on the loading & basting. My guess is load the way you want the fans to go, baste all along the sides & bottom, then start quilting that basted rolled up quilt, from the bottom, back up to the top. Just ordered my first set & already think I need the extension set. But I'm just going to play with the original set & make sure I want those extra lines (isn't half inch quilting the BEST though???!!). Thank you for the great videos!

Hi Susan - thanks for your comment. You are correct about loading "the way you want the fans to go"! That is something I have not really mentioned and shown examples of. I'll be sure to explain that part better in the next version I do of these. Hope you enjoy the set and grab the expansion too! Yes - I love the 1/2" quilting! Happy Quilting! Michael

I ordered this set and I just started "a king size" for myself using this Fan rulers I find it hard because I am starting at the top end the top and the lighting on my machine doesn't doubt very much I understand where you're coming from starting at the bottom but I am starting to get the rhythm took me 2 hours to get from one side to the middle oh my but I think it is going to work next time I will start at the bottom and see how that works great rulers

HI Michael- newbie long armer, just found you. Wanting to use baptist fan templates, as well as clam shell. In my head quilting bottom to top makes the most sense for visibility, but how do I load my quilts? Can you do a video on this/direct me to one? Thanks sew much, Barb

Hi Michael. Do you always work the Baptist fans left to right? I started today and tried to go back from right to left on my second row....had some issues....operator error...LOL. I am seeing that I probably will do better go left to right like you did on each row. I did start at the bottom of the quilt after I basted it. I am not left handed but my sister is.
@michael.quilts
@michael.quilts 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Janeen! Yes, I personally always quilt baptist fans left to right. I suppose I quilt most things left to right when possible. Not sure why that is - just habit mostly. However, I will say that most of the time if issues come up with thread breakage/nesting - it's often associated with stitching right to left and/or front to back. A technician once told me it has something to do with the thread being at a difficult angle when the hook grabs the thread in the bobbin area. Not sure if this is an issue or not. Are you left handed by any chance?

So, when you pre-baste, do you do just the top, sides, and bottom? Or do you do other SID basting to stabilize a larger quilt?
@michael.quilts
@michael.quilts Жыл бұрын
Hi Christine. Good question. I baste the whole quilt with a very large meander, making sure to stitch down the top, sides, and bottom. If you keep the basting stitch large enough and loosen the tension a bit, it's very easy to take out as you get to each area to quilt.

Should you measure the quilt to determine the size/amount of baptist fans or do you just wing it?
@michael.quilts
@michael.quilts Жыл бұрын
I’ve never thought about that after all these years. I’ve always been fine knowing that the fans will just naturally “fall off” on the opposite end from the start. But you could use the marking template that comes with the set to center the first row or set the start of the design anywhere really. But starting in the corner is what most everyone does. Let me know what you decide and how it goes. Thank You, Michael

Can these be used on a domestic sewing machine?

Hi Rosa. Yes, they sure can! You'll want to put some grip dots or something to help with slippping, as with any machine quiting rulers. I have gotten many fantastic pictures from domestic machine quilters who have used them. Happy Quilting! Michael
