A quick how-to on the basics of setting up a board for pumping.
Here's what you'll need:
1. Longboard | ROE Racing Mermaid, Subsonic Pulse 40, Earthwing Carbon, Big Myth Lucifers Hammer, Longboard Larry Walkabout, Sk8king Blaster and Gbomb illuminati are popular choices.
2. Wedges (Angled Risers)
• 10-15+ degrees of wedging in the front
• 5-10 degrees of de-wedging in the back
3. High-rebound "square shape" wheels. I use 70mm but pick 75/76mm for longer distances! (Atobe Bonneville, Abec 11 Big Zigs & Retro Zig Zags, Orangatang In-Heat & 4President, Seismic Hot Spots & Speed Vents, 3DM Avilas, etc)
4. A very turny front truck (Bennett 5.0) with excellent, snappy rebound back to center.
5. A stable rear truck with excellent return to center. Can't go wrong with either the Tracker RT-S or Seismic 130
6. BUSHINGS! Soft in front truck, hard on the back. Good bushings make all the difference and will vary from rider to rider. It's important to try different hardnesses (durometers) & different shapes (barrels/cones) until you get it right.

Many thanks. One question my boards have reverse king pin. So is it safe to say a standard truck is best. I find my boards both as from factory hard to pump.

hey did you have to swap out the stock kingpins for the bennett and tracker in order to fit generic longboard bushings (venom downhill/supercarve, khiros etc) because i know you have to swap out the kingpin on indy trucks in order to fit those kinds of bushings

Really small risers like those are called shock pads that are pretty much just used to absorb abuse so you prevent stress cracks and it helps preserve the wood from warping by the hardware area in some cases. But the rest of the video was perfect :)

Thanks heapz for the video, it helped a lot as I am looking into a pretty similar setup on a Rayne Timeline as well. Since Bennetts and Tracker are not really available in the country I live I take some more time to decide which setup to order from the US. This will be my first pumping setup and I am deciding between Bennetts 5.0 or 6.0 and the RTS 129 or 149...in regards to wheels I am also undecided between the Zig Zags 70mm and theBig Zigs 75mm. Any thoughts? Thanks a lot!
@getmygrubon
@getmygrubon 10 жыл бұрын
i did order the 6.0 and the 149s. Now I only have to decide on the wheels...could you or anyone really share what you consider as being a "long distance", so the point from when it makes more sense to take some 75s for maintaining momentum other than having some more reactive 70s? Thanks again.

I have a choice of brand new Bennett 4.3 or 6 for the front. Not finding the 4.3 to be the magic I’ve read that they are or should be. Wider truck 6.0 on the front okay? Or replace the stock new Bennett bushings? Thanks!

what do you mean it didn't go well? and how many combinations did you try? it took me a looooong time to figure out what i wanted and i now have a drawer full of bushings from all the combinations i've gone through. your first bushing combination isn't going to perfectly suit your style of riding it depends on your style of riding, your trucks, your deck and what you'll be riding but once you get it dialed it feels sooooo much better

I can pump on a Wolfshark with a single flat riser and two barrels, buying these trucks and those bushings is hella expensive. Buy calibers, a hairy bag of bushings on amazon, and find a carvy setup and you'll be just fine

Thank you man! for this vid. Quick question, you said you dewedged the rear for less turn and stability, couldn't you achieve the same thing by just tightening the rear trucks or do you need to add the wedges to keep the height the same as the front? and what would you get if you just made the rear neutral instead of dewedging it? Thank YOU :-)

makes sense, have you tried the Gbomb boards and if so any comments? I was looking at them and wasn't sure.
@kadenjones331

The concept is that of basic geometry. Research baseplates and kingpin (split) angles. Having the front truck turn more and a back truck turn less will make your board feel like a surfboard. If you do the opposite with the back truck loose it will feel like a snowboard but you will get bad speed wobbles. Downhill/Race setups are dewedged on the back truck only or split angle trucks, like a car the front turns and the back is just suspension. For LDP (long distance push) races its good to wedge the front truck too so all your energy is converted into forward momentum.

Not sure what the best pumping deck is... I try to match the trucks to the deck. Then match the wheels and bearings to the deck as well. Example. My worn dervish has ronin precision trucks with built in bearings riding on o-tang in heat wheels. It's heaven

stock bushings aren't put in to be good for your weight so regardless what trucks you buy it's good to replace your bushings so you can dial in your trucks just right. if you like your trucks with stock bushings you'll like them even better with better bushings

+JONATHAN PERALTA Front truck wedged: front truck will turn more than normal. Back truck de-wedged: Backtruck will turn less. Pumping gets easier this way, else very hard. I personally wedged only the front truck but on a relative horter board. The shorter the board the more you turn. Be aware: downhill not recommended with heavily wedged trucks because of speedwobble. One more thing: some flex of the board is great imo,

MedicSnacks Risers help make pumping easier for sure. Being higher off the ground makes it easier to generate leverage to propel yourself forward. The easiest board I ever had to pump on had 3/4 inch risers on it. Risers also help get you more space to avoid wheelbite, which is good because you need a lot of board lean to pump easily. If you know how to pump already, risers aren't totally necessary, but if you are just learning I would recommend getting a set.
