What happens when you have nice footage from a good tournament fight? You forget about it for 6 months, until you finally sit down one Sunday afternoon and edit it into something nice to watch.
Angel (www.youtube.com/@AngelChernaevHistoricalFencing) and I meet at tournaments much too often for our taste, and we typically take turns on who wins, as it happens with regular sparring partners. But from time to time we also manage to create a fight which is fun to watch and keeps people on the edge of their seats. That's one of those.
We are fencing with Sigi Concepts Standart (sigiforge.com/products/sigi-concept-feder/), and here is the ruleset (bit.ly/Swordplay22-Revisedrules) from Swordplay 2022, one of the key tournaments on the Balkans, which takes place every winter in Belgrade, Serbia.

Nice analysis :) What kind of shoes are you wearing ?

Ahahaha, totally forgot about the shoe situation. So, I had a pair of cheap sneakers with me, but I noticed in the pools they slide a ton on the mats. So I took out my Geox leather shoes (Symbol Man - www.geox.com/en-PT/leather_shoes-black-symbol_man-U74A5B00043C9999.html) and used them. Not the best choice for fencing, and I really prayed no one would step on them, but they had good grip and were comfortable.

@@borislavkrustev8906 hahaha well that's good adaptation! For a moment I thought they ere some sort of historically-inspired shoes, but then I realised they looked like modern leather shoes

@@frenchgalloglass5204 I am very tempted to try these at some point - www.geasoles.com/en/16-historical-fencing - but right now I have other gear updates I need to do before I worry about that :D

"Flat hit to the head are valid in this tournament" What?
@borislavkrustev8906
@borislavkrustev8906 Жыл бұрын
The ruleset is in the description - "Strikes made with the flat of the blade that land a hit to the head will award points as a successful hit landed in the Longsword disciplines." Flat hits to the head are also valid in our tournament, and many others. But if you don't believe in their stopping damage, ask a friend to hit you hard on the head with the flat of his feder :P

@@borislavkrustev8906 Hit me with the flat on my head and I've a headache, cut me with the edge and I'm dead. If points are awarded based loosely on the damage that a real weapon would have inflicted or on how difficult they are to achieve from a technical pov, so why award less lethal less technical strike be awarded the same points as potentially the most deadly?
@borislavkrustev8906
@borislavkrustev8906 Жыл бұрын
@@SirKanti1 Nope, points are not awarded based on damage. But if we get into the "simulation", they should be awarded based on stopping power. If I hit you in the head with a sword, no matter how it lands, it will stop you in your tracks. That will give me plenty of time to finish you off. How difficult they are doesn't matter in any combat sport that has serious sparring. Key is if there is a hit or not. As for different target having different value, I am not a fan of that system, but it's just another game. All HEMA tournaments are just games we play to safely test our fencing and compete at an organized and (relatively) objective manner.

@@borislavkrustev8906 Then why doesn't a cut to the head award more points as it has more "Stopping power"?
@borislavkrustev8906
@borislavkrustev8906 Жыл бұрын
@@SirKanti1 First of all, in our ruleset, all blows are 1 point. As for why the Swordplay team has decided to keep it 1-2-3 and 3 points for a flat hit to the head, the same as a cut or thrust - most probably simplicity. There is a stage where its all the same. Remember - this is a game, not an exact simulation of fighting. Any attempt to create a competitive simulation of sword fighting will always have another "but why not do this" question left.
