I will not remember any Action News broadcast without Jim Gardner. I'm 46 and he is the only one I ever knew. Even Channel 3 and Channel 10 had a regular flux of anchors ever since Larry Kane retired (from Channel 3 after a stint as Jim's predecessor at Channel 6 and anchoring across the street at Channel 10) in the early 2000s.

Same, @ 53 . Mr. Gardner IS news @ Night as far as I'm concerned. He's been a pillar of integrity and consistency for my entire memorable life. Every major crisis, weather disasters, and especially tragic events like - 9/11, Reagan assassination attempt/J.Brady murder, MOVE disgrace, D.C.Sniper terror, or COVID-19 pandemic, were when Jim really brought it home. We always felt that Jim wouldn't lie to us like other members of the media do now. If Jim was behind it , we believed. His tact and sincerity ,and occasionally even contempt and disgust, when the story was particularly vile. I'd look to him like an elder relative to keep me informed and aware. Even when the "top stories" were successes of our pro & college sports teams, Jim always showed legit enthusiasm as well as trademark knowledge and insight when he would gleefully announce who won. I honestly cant even imagine him NOT being on the screen when tuning in at night. Probably nodded off with him there 1000s of times. Jim Gardner and Harry Kalas' voices on the air would always let me know that I was home, after having been away for school , or work , vacations , etc for any period of time. Not too many other people that Im not personally close to can have an affect like that. Thank you sir, for all you e provided us.

I agree Cash. When Jim Gardner does retire for good later this year, it is time to 'retire' the Move Closer to You theme since he is the last of the original WPVI Action News faces of 50 years ago. Here in the NYC area around 20 years ago in the early 2000's, Sister Station WABC-TV "retired" the classic "Cool Hand Luke" theme to Eyewitness News when fellow legendary Anchor the late Bill Beutal retired as well.

Now I came to the comments to read what people thought about him. At first I was like, but wait he isn't going anywhere if he is still going to be on at 6pm! Then I thought, why am I so emotionally invested in watching news anchor I don't know from another city who is still gonna be on at 6!?!? The crazy part?? I said all that to say, I am from and sitting in San Jose, California right now and first started watching the news as a kid with my grandparents. But wasn't thinking about that part until I read your comment!! It's 5:19 am here! That's crazy or I just need to go back to bed!! Lol still don't know why I clicked though!! Lol life is crazy for real!

What more can one say about this local legend? If that was not an amazing farewell to the 11pm newscast speech, I don't know what is! I will be 50 in April and have been watching Jim Gardner my entire life. To say Jim is good at what he does would be like saying water is wet. Anyhow, I am sure many of the local newscasters on other stations were also watching Action News at 11pm on 1/11/22 to see history in the making. At the very least, we still have the 6pm newscast with Jim for the rest of 2022! Needless to say, Jim has more than earned this moment!
