Longtime meteorologist George Winterling dies at 91

Our hearts are heavy over the loss of our beloved former colleague, George Winterling. He passed Wednesday at the age of 91. Winterling served as WJXT-4′s first chief meteorologist and held the position for 47 years before retiring in 2009.

Definitely the GOAT Meteorologist of Jacksonville FL! Learned so much about weather watching him. He was so awesome! Prayers up to family, friends, and fans. ❤

He was a good person and I'm sure he'll be dearly missed. I grew up with him as forecaster, I remember his first day on the weather. RIP George

RIP. I grew up watching him. Loved him on TV. Something about his presence put me at ease during storms. Such a legend.

I watched George Winterling since I was a kid in them 60's. I remember the garden he has behind them bank at Town n Country Shopping Center. Great man!! Rest in peace George and God bless your family. You will not be forgotten!!❤️

When I think of a meteorologist, George Winterling is the name that instantly comes to mind to the exclusion of all others. I remember the markers on paper when George presented the weather, and it was fascinating to me to watch how this one man could explain the complexities of atmospheric movement so easily. We briefly moved away from Jacksonville, but when we returned, George was still there delivering the weather news, and it was welcoming. He will be missed.

- I grew up with George, he was a pleasant man and the most accurate, competent weatherman. When he said it would rain you could count on it raining.

I will always remember George Winterling. Perfect name for a weatherman. I remember hurricane Dora, and Mr Winterling’s reporting. I work at an ALF and the residents loved George. Ms Maggie waited for the weather to come on and she would smile the entire time he was on. God bless Rest In Peace. One more thing I loved how Debra G. Would call out his name Geoooorge and their laughter. #1 weatherman

Oh the memories, growing up with George & Ch. 4 in the 60s & 70s when I lived in Jax. RIP George & condolences to your family. BTW I also graduated from Lee H.S. as he did 20 yrs. earlier.

He was someone you could cozy up to at 6:00 every night no matter how your day went, George, Tom & Debra made it bearable growing up in Jax.

My deepest condolences to his family and to all of you at Channel 4. I met George at my church, First Baptist in downtown, and had to go say hi. He was such a very sweet Christian man, and I know he's with Jesus now.

i grew up watching channel 4 news . its the only news my family would watch , ... with Tom , Deb , Sam, and George winterlings weather . IT STILL IS THE ONLY LOCAL NEWS I WILL WATCH , .... BECAUSE ..... I CAN TRUST THEM ! THANKS FOR BEING JACKSONVILLES TRUSTED NEWS STATION . THANKS GEORGE , and BLESS YOUR FAMILY .

May he rest in peace thanks to his good weather reporting between God in him my mom was in a safe place when Dora came through if not for God and him I may not have been here today he's great weather reporting lead her to stay home that day rest in peace George and thanks for all of your services
