Lonzo Ball - Defensive Dynamo (GREAT HANDS)

Lonzo Ball has GREAT and very active hands. You can should be able to see it every time you watch him play. He’s a true (albeit skinny) 6’6” point guard with a natural feel for the game. The passes he was making in college reminded many of another big pure point guard from the Cali area: Jason Kidd. The Hall of Famer finished as a prolific rebounder (not just for a guard), second on the all-time assist list, but also second on the all-time steals list. He was a dynamic a defender as they came. That’s not to say that Lonzo doesn’t deserve that kind of comparison, but it’s an extremely high bar to meet. Zo certainly showed flashes of being a great defender in year 1. His hands are strong, his length is bothersome, and he’s got great timing at coming over weak side to create chaos and sometimes block shots.
According to ESPN’s defensive real plus/minus, Zo2 finished the season ranked third overall among point guards (better than Jrue Holiday, Ricky Rubio, Marcus Smart, Chris Paul, and Ben Simmons). That isn’t to say it’s a metric that tells the whole story, but it does help hammer home what the eye test should already tell you. What I’ve done for those that are interested is to compare the rookie seasons of Magic Johnson, Jason Kidd, Lonzo, and Ricky Rubio. The first two being a “what if everyone was right about this kid? and he absolutely maximizes ALL of his potential?” and the Rubio comparison being a steady and consistent, if slightly disappointing career. In terms of defensive rebounding (5.6 rebounds per), he lines right up with Magic. He’s got the highest number of total blocks (43, compared to Magic’s 41 and Kidd’s 24), but is the lowest among the 4 in steals per game. Not that blocks and steals are even a good metric for defense, but you can tell watching all the guys mentioned that they don’t really gamble a whole lot. They use their smarts until the right time to make a good play.

I don’t see how people can say he had a bad rookie season. He had really good rookie numbers. Dude is great all-around player on both sides of the ball, mad underrated defender also.

People who looked at Lonzo's shooting numbers and inability to score were the ones saying he had a bad rookie season. People who watched him play and looked at his other stats know he's a good defender, great passer, and good rebounder and tried to point out how rare it is for a rookie player to be that good at those areas. If he's an average shooter, Zo would be a top 50 player overall and top 15 at his position.

Lonzo is doing all the "old skool" things...playing D at all times, playing in a team format, understand his role as a PG. Not saying he's the only player doin it at the moment, but these are his core values you can tell. Can't say that about the majority of young players, or even older players that are established.

Lonzo understands that defending isn't about pure athleticism, it's about patience. Look at 1:47, Lonzo anticipates a shot and is in the air *way* before Monroe even brings the ball up. And when he jumps in the air, he's not mindlessly swiping at the ball, he has his arm out and is just waiting for the ball to go up. It's why when he is defending Harden, he almost never fouls the foul magnet himself.

Just waiting to see him fail just because he isnt a cosistent shooter in his first year eventhough hes a great passer, great on ball defender and crazy good help defender. His IQ bball IQ on both sides is crazy. He'll surely be in the All Defense team one day and might even be a DPOY. Just needs more cosistency also on defense. Ok can we get a quick reality check? Lonzo started 50 games, played 1780 minutes, and got 88 steals and 43 blocks. Decent numbers yes. Not great, but it does show that he is giving effort on defense. Dejounte Murray (2nd year) started 48 games, played 1743 minutes, got 97 steals and 31 blocks. Donovan Mitchell started 71 games, 2638 minutes, got 118 steals and 27 blocks. If you add the blocks/steals up Murray and Lonzo had similar impact, but when you watch the games you realize how much better Murray is on the defensive end. Like Lonzo he struggles with the 3-pointer, but Murray shoots MUCH better overall and can actually make Free Throws. Donovan Mitchell played some solid defense as well, while adding 20 pts a game, got to the FT line and sank 80% of his FT attempts. No question his impact was significant as a rookie. So before y'all schedule that jersey retirement ceremony for #2 Lakers PG you should watch some other good young guards play and see how many play solid defense. Then look at which of them are efficient and actually contribute to wins on a regular basis. Lonzo is a good player with potential, but he is not nearly as good as y'all trying to say he is.

Here's the video of Lonzo vs Dejounte Murray. I think he's hurt right now but wishing Dejounte a speedy recovery from h achilles tendon tear. Here's their match up last year. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aJZhdMZzsailmoU.html
