sure going vikingr (raiding) is typically what people think of when someone says Viking but the Norse were just like any other civilization in the fact that they trade with other kingdoms and had times of peace as well as war they weren't just savage barbarian raiders they had a whole culture politics and even kept themselves pretty clean as for the sets I love Norse mythology and culture and how they incorporated the mythology into the sets and I wish I could've bought some but i do have the creator 3 in 1 ship and i eagerly picked up the viking village set when it came out.

For this I was more just talking about Vikings them selves not the civilizations. I messed up and forgot the line about how Viking was a term used for that group of raiders. This theme revolves around the Viking part which is why I was doubling down of the gruesome part because I thought I was funny that this got by.

@@BrickingUpBradEuropean knights were as brutal as the vikings with their foes. It was common for knights to plunder farmsteads from innocent farmers from their own country, and one of the reasons for the crusades was to send off the knights off to a common foe instead of continuing to hurt other christian kingdoms. I'm not saying either party was "justified", back then plundering what was made war worth it and how soldiers made money, it was a different world and a complex situation. All lego themes are romanticized and often don't resemble the real world.
@ggCA07

@@italian-ladknights were landed gentry. essentially landowners who had an additional job of serving their lords or king. i don’t think they would be plundering their own lands. they can’t even tax anyone since those are issued by Kings or lords. the closest thing to a knight plundering his countrymen would have been in a country that was split between rival factions like France in the 1200s to 1400s when it was split between Plantagents (who ruled England and western France) and the French Kings. Or anywhere in the Holy Roman Empire
@italian-lad
@italian-lad 5 ай бұрын
@@ggCA07 They often plundered the other feuds they went to war with, while they were indeed nobles, they were the lowest ranking Nobles, who had a small piece of land. and some seeked power and money, which they could get in said plundering. At some point, the wars and raids got so brutal and frequent the church had to proclaim a "Truce of God".

Why are you that surprised that Lego would make this. Yes Lego doesn’t like brutality, but they’ve made many pirates themes as well.

As far as story goes, I typically imagine the vikings to take place before the castle theme. The trolls then find battle wagons from the vikings and that is where they figured out how to make siege weapons (as my trolls are very very stupid)
@BrickingUpBrad
@BrickingUpBrad 9 ай бұрын
I definitely can see that happening! It’s sort of what I was thinking.

Makes sense. The medieval era ran between the 5th to 14th century, and the viking era only lasted between the 8th and 11th century. So maybe the castle theme is set in the later medieval era. The lego viking and castle era could have also taken place at the same time but in 2 seperate sections of "medieval lego land". Maybe the northern most section of medieval lego land was home to the Vikings, and the castle era factions just didn't bother going that far north due to the extreme cold making it difficult to navigate

First of all, your bracers look great. It's so amazing to see how far you've come since the first Tavern Talk. As for this theme, I love all the Norse mythology they put into it, and while it doesn't have much story, this leaves you room to create your own. And the torsos are impeccable! Probably the most realistic castle torsos, and able to be used in almost any faction, like the fantasy era king. What with the creator viking ship and the viking village, I think it's coming time for me to make a animated viking trilogy.

It should be noted that this theme was made with a 2005 historical and pop culture context, while we look at it with a 2023/24 context. Wider implications of Viking history, while likely very much known to the DANISH company, was probably unknown to the target audience outside of "Axe welding norse warriors". Would this theme get made in the modern age - yes actually, It kind of already happened. But like it's 2005 counterpart, it sits detached from it's (now more widely known) historical context

My personal theory is the vikings settle in this new land of magical creatures and over hundreds of years establish 3 new kingdoms, the crown knights, who reside in the same general area they first landed, and is still beset by the undead, trolls and dragons, and the lion (red and white) and dragon (green) kingdoms were established further east and and over years in these kingdoms creatures like trolls and dragons became myths

The early Lego Castle themes such as the Crusaders and Black Falcons were more based on Danish chivalry specifically, which makes perfect sense given where Lego is founded and operated from. There's a lot of overlap with Britain and Germany and France, but it's mostly the DNA of the Christianized descendants of Vikings. That said, the Forestmen and Knights Kingdom were more English than anything, with all the Robin Hood and King Arthur influences on those themes.

I prefer the simple designs from 80's and 90's but these viking figurines are quite cool. Mixing historical stuff with fantastical elements is a great thing in LEGO world. In the past we had ghosts, dragons and the wizard which was freaking cool. I can see that LEGO is keeping some stuff from it's legacy. I miss the vintage designs though. Maybe I'm just old prick. 😆

I have all the original Viking theme and am looking forward to getting the new village. I liked the ship, and have frequently rebuilt it over the years. The viking figures get used a lot in my D&D games, and whenever we need a long ship, the old one comes out of storage. I kept the castle built for a while, but eventually turned all the wood pieces into a viking hall moc, which I still have built to this day, as part of my castle village display. I might have to spruce it up when I get the new ideas village, and set them up with both ships and all the dragons from the original wave!

Vikings were NOT ancient. Ancient implies any group living in Classical Antiquity and prior (but not prehistory). Classical Antiquity was when the Romans and Greeks existed in their famous states (as philosophers, with heroes snd gods and empire, Julius caesar, alexander the great etc). After the Roman Empire split in the 300s AD and then Western Empire fell, the “dark ages” began in Europe which is basically when knowledge was slow coming and not much intellectual change occurred (but knowledge was still being gained in other parts of the world including the Middle East, the dark ages were unique to western Europe). Then the Holy Roman Empire formed and the middle ages began which is when the vikings existed. middle ages is split into early (when most viking activities occurred) and high (when it ended with Christianization of Scandinavia). The middle ages ended with the fall of Constantinople and the conquest of the Eastern Empire by the Ottoman Turks, marking the beginning of the early modern period

Lego hates brutality but there’s a good chance other sets would get kids engaged in learning history. There were great people who served in many “ruthless” armies. I’ve always wished that Lego would do world war 1 themed sets with trenches, bi-planes, early tanks, etc…. Same with Roman/Greek or other historical warfare. Medieval war was very brutal and pirates raped, pillaged, and plundered just as much if not more than Vikings! Their standards are laughable! I know there are other brands that make the stuff Lego refuses to but the quality and feel just isn’t the same. Lego is missing out on so much potential money.
