Investing/collecting sports cards can be a blast, but it is not always the most budget friendly hobby. For this reason people will often ask me if a certain player is worth buying. Instead of telling you who to buy I created this video to show you what 5 things I look for when buying rookie cards.

9s are my way to go to buy now and sell more easier down the line because it's a more affordable option and even better if no Gems are out there. I try to go no lower than PSA/BGS 8, but I think even key RC's and 2nd year in Nr-Mt 7 might be something for me to look into too. And I'm from a time when there was no such thing as a Gem Mint. But I do have a few good ones that are 9.5 or 10.

@@urban420cards depends on the card i got no problem wit a 7 or 8 if its a rare card of a great player, or a gold or orange auto ill take an 8, if its a pop 5 or 10 i dont care bout gems especially with certain card stocks and products gems are impossible certain years defects on everycard some the same defect like 03 bowman chrome theres a chunk of border missing on every card

The main thing that everyone seems to never mention, although it’s implied, is that the fact that you are ABLE to play in the MLB AT AGE 20 or 21 automatically makes you the kind of talent that is already predisposed to MAKE the hall of fame. That in itself is the key factor.

Andrew Jones should be in HOF!!! Best defensive CF all time!! I remember he played in WS at 18!!

Hard to get in to the hall on defense alone. Ozzie did it and Yadi is going to do it. The 10 GG's are very impressive, but the 1,900 odd hits with a .254 batting average will keep him out. Maaaybeee later with the veterans committee, but I doubt it.

Thanks for another great video. Appreciate the effort you put into your analysis. I always wonder when deciding who to "collect" - in 20 years, what picture - the actual picture - not colored boarder parallels or other gimmicks - do I want of their RC? Example - 2011 Trout US175 or his 2011 Finest - I want the Finest. Have a great one!

I think you could make an entire video on the 4 bullet points you listed on “Know what you are buying and know your exit window”. Very informative! Thank you. Off topic- What do you think about Bowman Chrome cards and bowman best cards that have print lines on them? Topps doesn’t consider something defective in the packs if they think they will grade at a PSA 8 or higher..so like print lines, little scratches etc. But from your point of view, would you buy cards you know have print lines on them or any kind of obvious manufacturing marks? I have a lot of nice bowman’s best/bowman chrome cards which have little manufacturing defects that I want to sell on EBay but don’t know if I’m going to be waisting time. I don’t know if long term investors like yourself would even consider buying cards like that. Thank you for the videos! Learning a lot!!

im back on the Acuna train he is back!! consequative multi hit games its exciting to watch him kill it again, Harper having his best season, Verlander, Scherzer and def scooping up Pujols. With rookies I like K% cant have strike out problems before you start facing major league pitchers

Matt get his Topps chrome auto. PSA 10’s are rare. If you can afford one. I pulled a green/99 out of a blaster box. One of the best pulls I’ve ever had.

Thanks Scottie. I look for players who have the combination of speed and power. I collect Acuna, Betts and Soto. I sold my Trouts based on his age and injuries lately. Betts is still highly undervalued. Keep in mind if Betts does win an MVP this year (2), he would be most likely a lock for the HOF.

Even if you think Trout is declining, selling him now is insane to me. He's gonna be an all time player when it's all done, comparable to Griffey, Mantle, etc. His cards will maintain value and keep going up as long as the hobby exists. Small dips when he's slumping are meaningless in the long term.

Mobius his pop count for his update PSA 10 is in the thousands. When the pop count is that high, there’s always someone out there who will sell it for a lower price. He’s going to have to win a ring 💍 or break an iconic record for his cards to really go up again. Lastly, you know how these big, long term contracts pan out right? Not good for the player and the team is handicapped for years to come.

@@leapheap6837 agree low pop is important however Trout can retire today and get in hall of fame by next week, Just cause he might be the 2nd or 3rd greatest of all time doesnt mean his cards wont go up in value, A ring would be nice but you really think its that important in baseball, he is only one man. Maybe if we were talking about pitchers but other then that wont have any bearing on future values. If your saying its difficult to find rare low pop trouts that wont cost you a first born child I agree but even still 2011 was a low print run year, even if you graded every trout rc printed it wont add up to the other players pop counts you mentioned except mookie

mickey8 you lost me at 2nd or 3rd greatest of all time. That’s laughable. This must be a 20 year old or teenager talking. He’s top 10 centerfielders of all time. These are my top 5 centerfielders. 1. Tris Speaker 2. Mickey Mantle 3. Joe DiMaggio 4. Willie Mays 5. Ty Cobb. Note: I don’t even have Ken Griffey Jr. in my top 5. He’s the best player I’ve ever seen in my life time. MLB ⚾️ has been played for 150 years. Start studying the players of the past. Oh, and by the way. 4 of my top 5 centerfielders all have 💍 RINGS!

@@leapheap6837 im older then 20 and did study players of the past, If ya go by War and not saying that War is the most definitive of the best player but its kinda what we got to go on cause it can be measured. Take out pitchers and steroid users Trout is well on his way to being a 130 War player and thats on the conservative side he can easilly have and an 8 or 9 War season putting him above 130. putting him right behind the Babe, Mays, Cobb and Aaron. Granted thats a lot of IF's, he has to stay healthy and consistent. winning a series isnt nessacary but to be fair how a player plays in the post season is important to his overall legacy, Hopefully the Angels getting a new coach can help with that because the Angels suck. My whole point is Trout is a great card investment pretty much already tied the kid for War i think griffey around 80. Im not even saying trout is better then griffey just saying Trouts projections make for a great card investment.

Sorry but how about stats like BA with RISP? Analytics aren't the be all end all. I agree with OPS to a point. Thanks for your input. Though I hate the Yankees, that would be a team to target as far as prospects potentially. If they become iconic there, there values will go places that no other market can get to.

I'm from Washington state so I'm a little bias but you're telling me JRod doesnt check every box on the list so far ?? Even #5, when the benches cleared during Mariners vs astors Julio hit a 2 run homer in the bottom of the 8th. Easily the biggest moment in the mariners season

How long do you think it’ll be before the Rockies either trade Zac Veen or mismanage his developmental process so badly that he’s a base coach in the Cape Cod league? If someone set the over/under at 2.75 years, you’d have to hammer the under, right? 🤣🤣🤣

Most likely he will be a superstar and then the Rockies will sign him to a big contract on a mediocre team to just trade him off like Tulo and Arenado 😮‍💨. Hopefully they get a new direction and that’s not the case though.
