Some people still think Russian and Ukrainian are the same language, and this is obviously wrong. Listen to the examples of Ukrainian sentences and compare them to their Russian translations. You will realize how different these languages actually are.

A much needed video. Are you able to do one with a Polish speaker? I’ve read that Ukrainian is linguistically closer to Polish, Belorussian & Slovak.

Each language is different and both are hard to learn; at least that was my experience.

Thanks for this 💙💛 lots of good examples of how different these two languages are. In 2022 it took me a few months of listening to content daily to perceive the differences, just because I had no Slavic background whatsoever (I can't distinguish Thai from Vietnamese either, but they are very different from each other). Then I started hearing it, and now I'm hardly ever in doubt (when I hear Ukrainians speaking russian or Surzhyk I do still get a bit confused, but I'm getting there). When I mention that I'm learning Ukrainian, I often get asked how similar russian and Ukrainian really are, and it's good to be able to give a clear and informed answer. Also, some people still believe that Ukrainian "evolved" from russian, which is about as silly as believing that Spanish evolved from Italian! Just the other day I informed a group of well-meaning Italians that the "russian language group" is not a thing 😂

Omg, "russian language group"? 🤣🤣🤣As crazy as it may seem, there are a lot of people out there thinking Ukrainian and Russian are the same language, or at least almost the same. I personally know people who would never tell Russian speech from Ukrainian, as these two languages sound very similar for an untrained ear. Maybe later I'll make a video with some tips for foreigners to help them recognize Ukrainian speech among others not even knowing the language itself, but just by the sound. I need to think about this 🤔🤔🤔

@@redpurple_ua Привіт, дякую за відповідь 😊 That is a really cool idea for a video. Some time ago I came across a Ukrainian language blogger who made a video about how russian sounds different when spoken by Ukrainians, really interesting and well made (she got a lot of hate in the comments though, poor love). One thing that really helped me was thinking about rhythm: Ukrainian is syllable-timed, russian is stress-timed. I often have to explain that to people, because they're just not familiar with the concept. I suppose I have an advantage in that I'm English-Italian bilingual and work with languages. If you make a video about phonetic differences I'm sure it will be great! But your content always is. Дякую за працю 🤗💙💛

They do have similarities. However, in this video I used examples that highlight their differences. 🤗🤗

Only a 60% similar vocabulary, different alphabet letters and an extra grammar case in Ukrainian, no they are definitely not the same.

Not the same. Russian doesn't sound melodic like Ukrainian.
