Look Inside Saxon Math || Saxon Math 6/5 Flip Through
Saxon is a tried and true math resource in the homeschool community. But there are many math curriculums out there. So If you are weighing your math options, here is what Saxon Math 6/5 looks like inside, how we use it, and why we like it!

When I was in 7th grade, I used Saxon, and it was the first time I ever had to read to learn something for myself. (I had been public schooled up to that time. And of course, we learn from the things we read, naturally, but I mean like a core subject. No one was presenting the math to me. I had to read and figure it out.) I LOVED IT! Saxon presented the material in a very systematic, logical way- unlike some textbooks in school that assume a teacher will be presenting concepts, and so they’re not as clear & thorough in the instructional section. With being so logical to follow, Saxon really set me up for success with this new experience of learning something for myself. I would say it was through Saxon that I came to love math! It presented math as a ‘flow.’ I loved beginning a problem and then riding the wave and seeing it all the way through. Or, if I got a problem wrong, I loved playing detective and meticulously going over my process/the process the book presented until I figured it out. So fun!! In fact, when my mom sent us back to public school only a semester later, I continued working in my Saxon math book because I loved it so much. 😂 (I’m an unashamed geek!! I love to learn. Haha) That being said, it is a pretty ‘dry’ curriculum. No bells or whistles. Haha I’m a very logical/orderly, type A personality, and so it was PERFECT for me. And I think it would work well for my oldest, as well. But, I do understand why it may not be a good fit for some people. 😊

Yes, I feel the same way! Especially in math, I do so much better seeing examples and working through them myself than being lectured to. It works great for my orderly brain! Lol

Thank you for such a thorough flip through of the 6/5 books! I was unsure if we should go with Intermediate 5 or math 6/5, but after seeing this I think 6/5 will be perfect for us.

This video was excellent. Thank you so much. Having your nails done is important for these flip through videos. Yours looked great! I was stressing about which level to get my kiddo- 5/4 or 6/5. This helped A LOT! Thank you and God bless

I refused to use Singapore math as it’s a lot but we ended up getting it and to adapt!!! I remember it being a lot as a kid. The investigation part looks awesome!!! If my kids struggle with a topic I don’t mind it taking longer and breaking it down but if they don’t need to take as long I don’t see why we need to take too long!!! TGTB stops hands on at Level 4 and i don’t like That!!! For any review problems I tell my kids to do what they need extra practice in!!! If they do extra that’s ok!!! My 11 year old son does extra. Saxon looks like it could fit him!!! We used math u see as we used math u see growing up but it didn’t fit our kids!!! We find that we don’t need the Hands on that we needed for the lower levels but we need some hands on!!!

I am on the hunt and I am learning about Saxon!! How do you use the books?? Do you have them do the problems in a notebook? Do you leave everything in the book or tear it out?? What do they do with the papers/worksheets when they are done? I will just marco polo you and ask all my questions 😁

Lol! In k-3 they have a perforated workbook that I just cut the binding off of at the beginning of the year to put the sheets in our file system. For the older grades, they just use it like a regular text book, copying the problems into a spiral notebook. The only worksheets they have at that level are the tests and timed tests. Hope that helps!

Does one need to buy a full kit. I'm planning to get one for my eight year old soon to be nine.

It depends what grade level you are getting. If he is 3rd grade or younger, you just need the text book and a package of student pages.

Would you say this level is good for just starting fractions?
@MommaonMission

They touch of fractions really early but I don’t think you have to have them super solidly to understand this level since Saxon is a spiral approach!
