Seeing Rhino review the plane was a treat. We were in VF-2 together and the thrill of flying the machine is never lost.

I was on the USS Enterprise in the 80’s. People don’t realize how big this jet is. It was mind boggling watching these big birds land on the deck. It was referred to as a “controlled crash” 😂. All the other jets looked fairly small compared to the Tomcat. Was sad to see her go. But I guess the fact that we sold some to the Iranians played a part in the decision to stop using the F-14. Besides the fact that it cost a boatload to maintain and operate. I remember we would have “airshows” for “distinguished visitors “ on the flight deck. They were usually Arabs and they set out some nice chairs and a mat (carpeting or padding of some sort) and they would give demonstrations. They would start with launching Tomcats. They would climb at a ridiculously rate while folding the wings until the plane looked like a triangle in the sky. Then they would break the sound barrier flying parallel to the deck and it would certainly get your attention 😂. If I was below deck and I heard a huge “ba-boom!!” I knew they were giving a demo. And I’d come up to watch if I wasn’t engaged in work. They would have a small craft sailing off our port side that the demo aircraft would do strafing runs on. Pretty cool. But yeah, the Tomcat was a beastly aircraft. Sad to see her go 😢.

Excellent dissertation. TY Pity that the F-14D did not get higher rate production, and under go even further development, it might have survived as the F-15 (EX) has today.

He needed to climb up in the cockpit and sit in that seat again. I bet the smells alone would trigger many forgotten memories

I wonder if a lot of the cockpit internals have been recovered by the Navy?

First thing I noticed when I got to get up close to an F14 back in the 80's was how big it is. Same with an F15. F4 is my all time favorite jet tho. The 188th in Fort Smith, AR, where I grew up had them, and I loved to ride my bike to the end of the runway and watch them take off or land.

Nice job, both of you! 9:00 Joe "Dirt" Durmon, VF-213, Enterprise. RIP, my friend! 10:00 I had to look it up. It's the Rutkowski profile, I believe. 32:45 My recollection (I flew the A, but not the B or D) is that at very high AOA, the shape of the fuselage between the motors was an air foil capable of providing significant lift. 60% of total is what I remember. That made for some very interesting flying techniques, to maximize the level of hurt you could apply to others at high AOA.

literally the coolest plane that was ever invented. I did my re-enlistment to the navy in front of this exact plane at the National Aviation Museum down in Pensacola because of my love of it and its history very cool to see this interview about it.

Favorite moments so far... Interviewer: "So how long did it take you to realize what this sensor did?" Pilot: "Uhhh day 1..." Like...duh. Interviewer: "So what how did it feel the first time you flew this aircraft?" Pilot: "Soo, this device under the nose is different with different models of the F-14"

Its certainly not a pitot tube. It's a very different sensor so to those guys that is a big deal.

No, The thing he pointed at is the IRST. Usually the IRST is a clear black bulb, NOT a gray bulb. I THINK the IRST was taken out and the aerodynamic placeholder is what's actually sitting in there (because the actual IRST system wouldn't have paint on it.
