I prefer Shimano but I bought the Favero Assioma pedals a few years ago before the Shi version came out, I switched over to Look pedals on my other two bikes after that so all cleats were the same but I really miss the Dura Ace. They just work better, more easily adjustable (without replacing blades) and the cleats don't disintegrate as soon as you walk in and out of a coffee shop!

I had the top of the line version 3's and went back to the Keo 2 Max Carbon's. The blades were a nightmare to clip in when you needed to clip in quickly. Also changing the blades is a PITA. The Keo 2's are much simpler to adjust with a simple Allen key.

These barely have more contact area versus the previous Look, 5 mm^2. Dura Ace still smacks this down, especially with the lower stack height, reliability (I have the three bearing PD-9000), and stability (cleat lasts so much better)

value for money and durability i always prefer shimano pedals... Shimano Dura ace is good wide enough for racing and long rides and that aerodyamic shape by look is completely nonsense just pure marketing hype. @@charlesmansplaining

I have the old style Blades and they're good pedals, but... the problem with super expensive pedals is when you crash, and you are going to crash racing bikes, pedals get hit first. Kind of puts a damper on buying super expensive pedals and on old Look Blades the plastic at the side would snap off easy.
@owensnicholas
@owensnicholas 7 ай бұрын
The Look Keo 2 Max is only 15g heavier, and you get an adjustable spring. All of them have a plastic body that the cleats WILL wear out eventually, increasing float. So just get the Max.

I had the previous Carbon version and they started creaking pretty badly so while I liked them I had to stop using them due to the annoying creaking noise. Been on Speedplay's and bought the basic version and did the titanium spindle/ceramic bearing hack over 5 years ago and still running great.

its similar to what Canyon does with their integrated cockpit. You only get certain tensions and are at their mercy if you need new ones. With the dura-ace pedals you can adjust the tension to how you like it. Keeps you riding if need to tighten it after years of use.

Im sure things have changed but every look pedal i rode eventually sounded like I was stepping on a duck every turn of the crank. Quack, quack, quaxk... Switched to Shimano SPD SL and never looked back. They're quiet all the time and easy to walk in. But admittedly my data point is old AF since I switched in the mid-2000s.

After many years of Look Pedals on different bikes i finally changed to Shimano. Feels so much better, should have done it long time ago. My last Look keo2max had already a little play in the bearings, when they were new. Now 20k later it got quite bad and they were spinning very loose, making it also hard to clip in. Walking in Shimano is also better and the ultegra and dura-ace pedals just look so nice on the bike. But yeah, maybe the blade are better than the keo2max.

My question is for both Look and Shimano. What is the point of wider platform? The cleat is the same size. So the contact area with the pedal is no change. So wider pedal for better stability, is it only a marketing Ploy?
@brentcollins9727
@brentcollins9727 7 ай бұрын
The cleat, bolted onto your shoe becomes part of your shoe. The wider surface distributes the weight more.
@williamko4751
@williamko4751 7 ай бұрын
@@brentcollins9727 sorry I don't see it. The surface that the pedal connects to the shoes is the area of the cleat. There is no more area to distribute the weight, regardless of how big the platform is. This question bothers me a lot, as I recently bought a Keo 2 max to replace my old Keo classic.

I've ridden Look for many years, until they fix the durability of their cleats I'm not going back. I currently have Time and Shimano pedals and both last about 10x as long as Look cleats. It's not just that the cleats wear down quickly, but they break under heavy loads like sprinting. Twice I've had reasonably new cleats snap during sprints (both times at the engagement point).

So, being the dickhead I am, I thought to myself, why doesn't he throw one of those haunches of his up on the scale and see if he needs those pedals. I fear customers that are heavy, yet want the lightest components in existence, unaware that they bear a lower weight limit that can't support their weight. I'm not taking the blame for something that breaks due to overloading (I'm more careful when I sell light components that have a lower-than-average weight limit, I don't sell them to just about any rider for safety's sake), that's on them. Good thing I haven't seen such a customer, yet.

I have always been a massive fan of LOOK pedals, basically been using them from day 1 for 20+ years and had no reliability issues… until I bought their V3 ceramic Ti blades! 🙁 Absolutely trash, the axles were loose right out the box and had plenty of play in them. Made noise after only a week of use. The only reason I bought them was for the Titanium axles, I actually never wanted ceramic bearings (because I avoid all hybrid ceramic bearings) but unfortunately they don’t sell a titanium with steel bearings version any more. I have a customer with the steel Ti blades and he has had no issues, it really upsets me having to spend extra money to get the Ti axles and knowing that the bearings you are getting are way worse. Also LOOK have zero customer support, I contacted them several times asking them to sell me the pedal tool as I have a shop and I need it to help service my customers pedals. They never responded. Ended up making my own tool. My advice is stick with the KEO max and Classic and avoid anything with ceramic bearings from LOOK. (If you want reliable pedals.)

I had such a bad time with the blade variants of the pedals. The blades wear out so fast and the back of the pedal starts to rock. And the blades are too expensive for what they are. I went back to the spring model just because it's easier to deal with long term. I'm a heavy volume rider too, 600 hours a year, so it gets annoying.

How long do ceramic bearings last in pedals? All I hear about CeramicSpeed is how the bearings wear out faster and aren't sealed well and have super thin grease, etc...
@xmilkcratex
@xmilkcratex 6 ай бұрын
Ceramic bearings are almost like cup and cone in the sense that they roll really fast but rely on regular service intervals. I personally feel like it should be used for fancy show off bikes or put them on a bike if you know how to service bearings regularly or don't mind having a shop look at them 1-3 times a year. If you just want to put ceramic bearings on a bike, ride your ass off for thousands of miles without thinking about it, probably don't do ceramic. I think it should be left for those who like to tinker with their bike and meticulously clean their bikes. Or rich people who don't care about burning through money and dropping it off at a shop the second something feels off. As far as pedals, I currently have a set of Look Ceramic Ti pedals on my mountain bike. I got them for a killer price so I couldn't say no. I plan on punishing them until they require service. I'll be honest. When it comes to pedals, I care more about that weight savings of Ti vs the efficiency of bearings. I currently have less than a year on them and so far so good but I don't feel optimistic about the results. Mind you, I currently have ceramic bearings in my hubs and bottom bracket and I've had a great experience with them with 2 years of use on my road bike BUT mostly ridden in fair weather conditions. I have a secondary bike that I use to punish in nasty weather conditions. I always think enjoying something like this is about "headspace". I have Dura ace pedals for 5 years with no issues. Still smooth and you can still feel them swimming in grease. I love fixing and cleaning my bikes but servicing my pedals regularly is a stretch even for me. I am still on the fence about going ceramic for pedals. If the mountain bike pedals impress me long term, it might be something I look into for my next pedals.

ha ...still can't service the bearings and as usual they will squeak after several hundred miles as all Looks do (same design) stil a pos blade that will loosen after a while ... remarketing gimmicks, shimano durace still rules the pedal market (as you did switched from look 2nd and 3rd iteration to shimano but never "looked" back!!)

these are a total ripoff. they cost them 10 dollars to make in china. these do not affect anyone's riding one bit.these people must be super rich and they have tons of money to waste.
