Goo Gone is my go-to glue remover. A hair dryer or heat gun can also work, but you don't want to harm the little figures. Plastic & heat do not always mix. I learned that the hard way. Warm water & soap or white vinegar can also be used. The Westmoreland owl plate is really nice. Not a high-end piece of Westmoreland, but still cool. Love the Restore. A great place to find furniture projects.

I would begin with hair dryer or heat gun on a couple of them first. Goo Gone might work too. I would be very careful with any kind of chemical glue remover- again it could melt the plastic. Good luck. I would have bought that printer's tray in a heartbeat! Any yes, that was a toaster!

Goo gone is great it hasn’t harmed any items I’ve used it on-antique furniture, porcelain, plastic, metal(I used to have an antique booth lol). Not one surface or finish was disturbed.

Hi Renee, the white dish with the spikes is either to make baked apples or baked potato, and yes the metal piece is a campfire toaster. Love the printer drawer, use a flat edge razor blade to get the pieces out, if it’s just hot glue you can heat it with a bow drier to try and peel it off.

I love going to thrift shops. Thank you for taking me to a place I may never get to go otherwise. I love how you engage your audience on choices you are making rather then just deciding. You are very entertaining and nice. I have enjoyed watching you all these years ❤️👏

OMG! That printers tray is fantastic by its self but the kitsch is a sensational find. Use good-gone before anything else. I'm sure the glues are old and easier removed than one would expect. Use super caution with heat, and solvents. You could just sell the entire collection online! No risk to kitsch items

The closest Habitat store to me in the SF Bay Area has very little in the way of dishes, glassware, etc. I’ve never seen books, CDs or DVDs. I have seen some decorative items such as artwork but the main thing for sale is used furniture, appliances and building supplies, etc. The store is much smaller than the one where you shopped.

Holy cats .... I had a tray like that I'd filled with little figurines and doo-dads for years ... I was tired of dusting it. I put it on my local "Buy Nothing" group and it went quickly.

I’ve been to several of the Restore stores in PA, South Jersey and DE. Hit or miss. My favorite piece is a vtg Barko lounger in 70s orange faux leather vinyl. It’s smaller, and fits my 5ft tall frame perfectly.

I handled mostly all the smaller items the last years I volunteered. It is quite interesting to see what all gets donated.We didn't accept clothing there, mainly due to limited room.

Now, it's been a few years since I've been in one of the Re-stores near me, but they weren't that much like a standard thrift shop. They had mostly construction materials- light and plumbing fixtures, doors, windows, cabinets, etc and furniture, with only a cabinet or two of other, traditional thrift store items. I guess I need to make another trip back there.

I would definitely start with a hair dryer from the backside of the printers tray, if it's old glue it's probably brittle. I love printers trays, had two small ones with metal handles and passed them on when I moved. They are awesome! Good luck with removing the glue and freeing those treasures.

That white dish is a ring dish. Place your rings over those stems. Other jewelry or coins in the dish part.

It looks to be glued with hot glue which should be easy enough to remove in that you just need a good stiff puddy knife that is small enough to get into the niche so that you can 'pop' each item up. Then the hot glue should be be able to peal off. Might need to use a heat gun too with it but be careful not to use it too long or you might end up with a burnt mark where you don't want it.

That was an incredible Habitat store! I've never seen one with household items and toys. All the ones here are strictly for home renovation and furniture. For the glue try a blow dryer and a small putty knife. Hope they come off for you.

We have 2 Habitat stores here also - one is more clothing and one is more "home goods." They are among the best thrift stores in town. I got a terrific Delta table saw & a bench grinder, and much of my wardrobe, from those stores. The printers tray is great. The glue I usually work with is older - late 19th / early 20th century - and it will.dissolve in a vinegar-water mix (horse hoof glue). But I don't know if that would work for you. It certainly wouldn't work on the new stuff. Might need to resort to blades. Those big MCM desks are great if you work from home or have a hobby that requires desk space. They're huge and you can't kill them. A couple of strategically-placed holes and you can hide your computer cabling too. Even with roll-tops. Our HFH does not have an antique section - I wish it did. In this area it's not uncommon for older homes to be knocked down so a new house can be built on the lot - and sometimes the owners will let Habitat in to take what they want before the house is razed. That's usually more like light fixtures, etc. - the one house I worked on like this was a '50s ranch so I didn't feel too bad. Are you wanting to removed the figurines to sell them individually or to put them into your own organization systems for things you already have? Hope you have a great weekend. The rain has held off here. I'm waiting for paint stripper to work on something so I can go scrape it clean. Usually I sit and watch it and start scraping too early - so I was glad to find you had posted. Have a terrific Saturday!

I need a big Habitat like this! Mine is bitty. No toys, no "antique" section. The glue looks like hot glue. It's going to be "fun" getting it off. Hot glue is a tool of the devil. It only comes apart when you don't want it to.

Can you remove dried hot glue? Saturate a Q-Tip or cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and gently rub the edges of the glue to soften the hold. Scrape away the glue with a scraper. For stubborn hot glue, heat the area with a blow dryer. Heating the glue will soften its grip and allow you to scrape it off.

Very nice trip to HABITAT with a pretty neat and very well organized inventory. 👌Concerning the printers tray: my decision would be to sell it "as is". If you like to remove the figurines, try a sharp letter opener or some kind of thin blade first to get between the glue and the wood. If this doesn´t work, try it carefully with a hair dryer or use some acetone or a special glue remover. Anyways, big score on this neat item, however your decison will be, you are the winner ! Keep it up, and let´s hope that you are/ were also the lucky one at today´s auction, fingers crossed ! 🤞 Greets from GER, U.
@janellmichael21665 ай бұрын
I would try using a blow dryer first to see if you can heat up and possibly liquify the glue if they used a glue gun to glue the figures in initially. Good Luck! Blessings, Janell

Love the printers box. I make shadow boxes so have a love for these. I would just be careful with any type of solvent that the paint of the figurines may get ruined. Heat could melt the plastics or make ripples in it. You might seek out or research antique restoration sites for removing glues.
@jamieomahen26565 ай бұрын
It looks like hot glue so I would try heat from the back or bottom. Since the toys look old I wouldn’t want the heat directly on them. If it’s another type of glue try good off or goo be gone. BUT try not to get it on the old toys as the paint as it might take it off too. Also you can go the other direction and put it outside to use the cold to pop them off! Great find!!!!

Your are so lucky to have all those stores in your area! Out here, as I have said before, in San Francisco and area...we have lost so many thrift and antique/junktique stores...and what's left is pretty bland! That oval milk glass dish looks like one you'd place on the chair of an unwanted dinner guest! Good night...all those CD's...I always look at these, have found some goodies! You'd put that toaster in the oven, at low temp...before electric toasters. As to your glued-down collection: Stay away from any solvents such as acetone, paint remover, or lacquer thinner, as these may damage the figurines' finishes! Try warm water, mineral sprits pain thinner, or rubbing alcohol...apply with an artist's brush at the base of the figurine and apply to soak the glue. After applying and soaking for at least 15 minutes, use a single edged razor blade at the glue joint, gently cutting through the joint. Try these methods on a couple pieces you least care about. Another approach is using a heat gun set on low temperature, aimed at the glued area, to soften the grip. With some experimentation and patience...you should have success. If older glue...most were water soluble...try that first! Let me know...good luck...and be patient!

Thanks for the detailed glue removal lesson! I’m sure you’ve had your fair share of glue issues with all of your train items. I’ll try out your method & see how it goes! I just realized… all those little figures & not one frog! 🐸 Can you imagine if the whole tray would have been filled with frogs?? I probably should go back & take a look at the CDs, both to see if any are worth reselling & also just for my own use. Wonder how long it would take to alphabetize them & how long it would last once in order? 😂

the large almost circular blade w/ a handle can be looked 2 ways. i believe its actually an herb chopper. if its carbon steel (like grandmas old butcher knives) it wont hurt to use it. the other way to see it is as an ULU (sp?). not sure of their actual shape but, they were used as a specialized knife to cut blubber off of animals used for food in the artic regions. less fun to think of but, necessary for their survival.
@TheAccidentalViking5 ай бұрын
I think you start with the least invasive solution first, so try water first. Then move up to a percentage of alcohol solution and worst case, try acetone because that will be the worst for the wood finish. If it is hotglue gun glue, try a hair dryer.

. We're gonna be moving and leaving behind most of our furniture from this house.. We're looking forward to pick up old, vintage furniture in thrift stores, auctions etc. I understand that the type of furniture, that I've heard you call "Waterfall", is not too popular. That's awesome as that's just the type we're looking out for to fill up the new house, as I'm sure we'd get some good deals on it. That printer's tray was incredible - also that it's on legs is a bonus. The non-plastic items might get loose using a hair dryer - starting on the 'low' setting. Un-Du is a good remover of glue. It does work great on paper ephemera - postcards glued into albums, for example. Enjoy the weekend!
