You're missing the point about the bertie beetle show bag a little... when you're a kid, show bags are a cheap way to get your parents to buy you heaps of lollies and other junk etc. When you're 12, it's almost as exciting as Chrissy.

Even if you don't get the Bertie Beetle bag, you have just been given one of the most authentic and memorable experiences of growing up in Australia. No matter how young or old you are, the BB bag has always been the cheapest to buy and usually the first show bag I remember buying on my trips to the Royal Easter Show here in Sydney. I have also been to the Melbourne show and would have done the same. Just consider it a kind of mystic secret of Australian ways. And if you tell an Aussie you made sure to buy a Bertie Beetle bag they will probably nod and smile and think you know.

The Bertie Beetle show bag is a throwback to our childhood when it was the cheapest show bag to buy. The chocolate actually contains excess shavings and honeycomb dust from the manufacture of Violet Crumbles. That is what gives it a slightly grainy texture. The other thing which makes Bertie Beetles so special is that you can only obtain them at the various Royal shows around Australia’s capital cities. They are not sold in shops. Bertie Beetle is cheap chocolate. It was made by the people who made Violet Crumble (Hoadleys) in the past and used up the leftover fragments of honeycomb. They taste like copha to me - it’s a major ingredient- but have the same nostalgia of childhood so we buy a bag each Easter Show.

Bertie Beetle is a relic from the days when show bags were called sample bags, and were free. Yes, free. Cheap sweets, cheap toys, comics, and samples of the products from the company's range. Every kid aimed to collect a real swag of sample bags, and go home on the train or tram, loaded down. Don't forget: no liquids, aerosols in your carry-ons, or they'll be confiscated. But judging by those first two bags, that name might be somewhat outdated - they've really moved with the times and upped their game! Well done Charlie with your presentation as well, first class. Bertie Beetle show bags are a must…they are the show bag everyone can afford..most Aussie kids (at least of my generation) got a Bertie beetle show bag it’s kind of a tradition…to this day I can’t go to the show without getting a Bertie beetle

Love seeing the showbag haul! So glad you got to go to a show, the Sydney Royal Easter Show is a highlight of the year for me. I love the tote bag showbags, you get a really nice bag and all the goodies to play with. By now you’ll be home hope you survived going to work straight off the plane Charli. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the vlogs of your trip! Edit meant to say my fave showbag and always a must is the Womens Weekly showbag, it’s always filled with tons of samples and magazines. I also love the Better Homes & Gardens one for the same reason and I always reuse the totes for beach bags or craft bags. The Womens and Mens Sport and Athletica ones are usually really good too and also the Agricultural Society Bag supports the local producers and is usually great value. As are the bakery bags and the chocolate ones. Every year they get better and better, we always wait til the end of the day to hit the showbag hall otherwise it’s a lot to carry! So much fun.

the BEST part of any of the ekka/exhibitions around Aus cities was getting the showbag guide in the newspaper the month before it opened, categoried by $$ so starting at $1 showbags up to like 100$ showbags! It was always exciting to look at the list and get the courage to ask your parents for a more expensive one each year lol

The Bertie Beetle was originally created to use up the broken pieces left over after making Violet Crumbles. They would pulverise the honeycomb and mix it with chocolate. It was only available as a show bag treat, not in regular stores but they did release a Bertie Beetle ice cream a few years ago.

The Bertie Beetle bag has shrunk, the chocolate beetles use to be wrapped in foil and were much higher quality but like everything these they become smaller and cheaper.

Great job Charlie.... Haven't been to the Sydney show for a few years now. That one is always at Easter. I really don't understand why people insisted you get Bertie... so bloody overrated. When I was a kid in the 50's the show bags were a shilling ( 10cents) and were an advertising tool for a company's products you got the different products they made in miniature forms along with lollies puzzles or comics or colouring in books ,pencils baloons and other let's face it crap that would entertain a kid for five minutes, however they were good fun and depending how much money you had you could accumulate quite a few my record was 21

The Melbourne Show have rules that show bags must represent good value, cheaper than normal retail prices. If not, bag is refused. Showbags were once known as "sample bags" as they originally contained product samples of household goods such as soap or canned foods, produced by a single vendor or a group of vendors. Such sample bags were originally given away free of charge or carried only a nominal price in order to promote brand awareness.

Bertie Beetles came in the Hoadley's show bags of the 60's & 70's and would have been the equivalent value of your Lulu & Tilly bags . Your Bertie Beetle bag was was such a disappointment. Times change, sigh . . .

Always like the big combine harvesters and other farming implements and the animal isles & rides. An unforgettable aside. While taking school kids round the Royal Melbourne Show in the seventies, went through bull shed with multiple bulls asleep in the hay either side of footpath with their balls on full exposure. A notoriously naughty boy was about to tread on a sleeping bull's testicles! Yelled and ran him down, just in time! Saved the day for all my charges. Phew!!! - thanks again Charlie and Rob. Travel well + safely back to 'Old Blightie'/ ENGLAND - my ancestral home.

Hi Charlie, I've never seen the Showbags you bought before. I don't recall seeing that kind of bag at The Ekka in Brissie (Brisbane) even though it's been a while since I went to it. I'm originally from Brissie, but I've been living in The Atherton Tablelands, Far North Queensland since I was a teenager in ghe 90's. The Ekka is always in Winter and to try avoid getting sick whilst on holiday. I do my best to not go there at that time of the year. I think there are few things worse than getting sick and having to stay in bed whilst on holiday. When you'd rather be out and about. I'll admit to being a bit of a big kid when it comes to the Showbags I've bought at some of our local Shows (Fairs) over the years. I have bought s Bertie Beatle bag once, because of some of the hype I'd heard. I can also take it or leave it. I went to this year's Show and bought a couple of Darrell Lea Showbags each for my sister and I. There's three different ones. They were really good value and were a bit heavy to carry around though. I've still got some of my Lollies left. My Sister was very appreciative of my present.

I worked at the Adelaide Show for 10 years, on the sideshows and rides. Bertie Beetle bag was a MUST every day.. A fave of my old Carny boss Rex (R.I.P.), who got one every DAY of the Adel Show, for over 20 years.. they have changed they used to have rice bubbles in them. Good score there Charlie BTW!!!

Yep Bertie Beatle show bags is what we all got and I never liked them either. The other show bags are a good deal and I just looked up the entry fee which was much cheaper than I thought it would be. Definitely a bargain even with the entry fee. I haven’t been in a long long time. Pat time I went I was on the zipper and my friend hit her head on the padding inside the ride because she wasn’t ready 😂

it's been years since I've been to the RMS..I'd always do my homework first to see what bags were for sale and what were the contents...I prefered bags that were usable day to day bags...would always choose one that my brother Les could use when attending day placement...would get bags similar to what you got and bags with edible goodies in them...didn't make it this year but in the last couple of years, whilst everything was closed down, I'd get emails from the company selling the bags..I'm tempted to have a look and perhaps buy 1 or 3...safe journey home guys...(I was the one in the white shirt/black vest at you Melbourne catch-up...

Woah. The Bertie Beetle show bag. Blast from the past. Love it. Memories from 55 years ago. It was a lot bigger then or maybe I was a lot smaller. They used to have lots of honeycomb bits in them, looks like they've taken it out. Shame. In the old days you would buy a $2 show bag with about 70cents of content but remember we were kids, and the show only came round once a year. It was an adventure. In the 80's the bags and rides got way too expensive. With those other bags, looks like they have changed significantly but I can also see, the mothers spending about $1,000 for that sort of stuff. Great marketing. Send the kids to see the animals while Mum goes shopping. 🪃🪃🦘🦘😉😉👍👍

The reusable underwear are basically period undies. They are the best 👍 no more pads or tampons, just the knickers with built-in absorbency. Plus better for the planet. I could never go back to using pads 🙄

Missed the Royal Adelaide show, but the Melbourne one must be as good, lots to see and showbags a big item. Good event to visit must have seen lots of cool stuff, I just went for the rides. Miss the ol zipper and mad mouse rides.
