If you use the transistor amplifier and install a very carefully chosen capacitor value you can make the flickering softer but it still does flicker.

My grandparents have an early version of a flicker candle. I installed a little head phones speaker in series and it plays a chinese(?) melody. One can spot these LEDs by their unrealistic blinking.

We would normally use a microcontroller if we wanted to edit the flickering pattern; you may wish to do the same.

The flickering rate is determined by the chip inside the LED, and can't be changed after the LED is built.

It's a shame and pretty stupid that the LEDs don't have flat/inverted cone tops to make them emit more light to the side as you'd expect from a flame.

There are other variations of these LEDs: a diffused version (the smoky ones that spread the light better) and a side emitting variation that only spreads the light sideways using a cone shape drilled into the LED from above to reflect the light sideways.

Interesting that the PWM frequency is fairly low. What's the bet it uses a feedback shift register pseudorandom generator and just PWMs a few bits of it? Would be interesting to collect the output for a while and autocorrelate it to recover the length and maybe guess the polynomial.

Superb circuit, but my secondary LED (several in parallel) light up a dimmer than they would normally run.I would be very grateful if you could tell me how to get the secondary LEDs up to normal brightness.Al the best.

+Donald Baker You can turn up the current, up to the current limit of your LEDs. If you're running multiple LEDs in parallel, then try adjusting the load resistor value on each of those LEDs.

Most likely you picked a transistor that does not have enough amplification (often called h_fe in the datasheet). Make sure your transistor can provide enough current and that the base current is high enough to drive the transistor fully. Btw. I hope all of your parallel LEDs got their own series resistors. Otherwise you're asking for trouble.

With a big enough transistor, you can power an unlimited number of LEDs.

this is awesome, been looking all day online for a solution to this. im making a prop for a costume i wanna wear, and essentially making an energy sword prop from plexiglass and didnt want it to light up with basic led lights alone. i wanted that lficker look to create the energy look you know? also, is there any way i could possibly speed up the flicker? thank you!
