In what I call a "little immersion", that is an opportunity that pops up that you don't think is a learning moment but turns out you can take something from it, I'm taking a look at the drain hole covers around the compound here in Beijing. For the full list of title cards, head over to this Google Folder and have a look at the other files I have available:
drive.google.com/drive/folder...
00:00 Introduction to Beijing Drain Covers (井盖 jǐng gài)
00:48 Rainwater and Wastewater Covers (雨 yǔ and 污 wū)
01:19 Electricity and Tap Water Covers (电力 diàn lì and 自来水 zì lái shuǐ)
02:23 Telecom and Engineering Covers (电信公司 diàn xìn gōng sī and 市政工程 shì zhèng gōng chéng)
04:35 Warm Water and Waste Covers (暖 nuǎn and 污 wū)
05:32 Review and Practice (复习与练习 fù xí yǔ liàn xí)

I got bachelor degree in mechanical engineering in China. The QT stands for “球墨铸铁(Qiu Mo Zhu Tie)” QT is the initial of “球” and “铁” while it the term means nodular cast iron, the chemical composition of QT600-3 is approximately as follows: Carbon (C): 3.6-3.8%, Silicon (Si): 2.4-2.8%, Manganese (Mn): 0.3-0.5%, Sulfur (S): 0.03-0.035%, Phosphorus (P):

@stevenslanguagevlog Don't know how to upload pictures in the comment section. But NYC manholes are emblazened with the names of the company, such as ConEd, Water, ans Sewer, or NYTA ( transit authority). There are company acronyms that I don't know.

@@stevenslanguagevlog He is from Henan and is being self-deprecating. At one point, China's industrial development was extremely rapid, producing 1.3 billion tons of steel annually. In the frenzy to find iron ore and scrap iron for steelmaking, the price of scrap iron skyrocketed, making manhole covers a target for many thieves. This led to a sudden increase in the number of broken bone cases in Europe at the same time (because European rogues would steal manhole covers to sell, causing pedestrians to break their legs,It's not just Europeans; Chinese people suffer from it as well. One of my classmates encountered such a "trap" while riding his bicycle at high speed. He had a severe fall, shattering his hip bone, and underwent multiple surgeries, but he will be troubled by it for the rest of his life. Sigh!). Similarly, when the Mongols invaded the West, the price of fish in Europe soared because so many fishermen were conscripted as soldiers to resist the Mongol army. In the same way, many people in China also stole manhole covers to sell. At that time, everyone blamed it on the people of Henan, and eventually, "Henan people stealing manhole covers" became a meme.
