Looking at different types of interfacing

Whether you sew bags or clothes, from time to time, you’ll need to use an interfacing on your projects and it can often be difficult to choose which one works best with which project.
Most sewing patterns usually will not list a suggested interfacing product, because availability varies so widely that what is available in one area or country, can not be found in another area, making a person in that area reluctant to buy a pattern when the stipulated interfacing can’t be used.
So let’s take a look at a few examples today and you can see in the video how they change the structure of the fabric in each case.

This is by far the most informative video on interfacing I’ve found so far. Thank you! As a new sewer it can seem daunting with all the different interfacing options to pick the right one and sadly the staff at my local fabric store are not very helpful and get annoyed when you ask questions. I feel like I can pick out what I need with confidence now after watching your video.

Good morning ☕️. You know how you do something (in this case use interfacing) for decades but don't know WHY you do it but you do it because that's what you were taught? Deby, It's funny that I just watched your vid regarding recessed zippers where you used headliner fabric for the first time and struggled. I am sooo glad that I watched this right after. I too would have put the soft side to the fabric like you did and would have suffered too... even with the Teflon foot. Another very informative piece of work. I am so thankful that you did this video and shared your knowledge in a Visual way with Fabric Application. Thank you so very much!! I am just learning bag making and I had no idea really where to start with stabilizers and I have been trying different stabilizers and sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t…it was purely a guessing game. But now I feel as if I have a good knowledge base because you took the time to share your knowledge in such a way that I understand and I am so grateful!! I do have one more question, what do you use for the bottom of the bag? You know the part that feels like hard like plastic that helps the bag have a stable bottom so it stands up. I would appreciate any and all advice you have. Thank you again! 😊

I just started sewing and was so confused about which interfacing to use - I just made my first drawstring project bag and used Pellon 808 and felt maybe it was too stiff when I pull the drawstrings closed - it didn’t drape as nicely as I’d like. This was all so helpful and resourceful! Thank you for this wealth of information. I have been searching the internet to find out when to use a fusible interfacing and when to use fusible web. Why would one use one over the other? I am making a quilt which calls for both for different applique pieces to be sewn onto the quilt. Do you have any insight on this topic? Thank you again!

Alice Brown: I use fusible web to attach the applique to the quilt, then I stitch around the edges of the applique (use whatever stitch you like). The fusible web is used when you want 2pieces of fabric attached to each other. I do not trust the glue on the web to continue to hold the applique to the quilt or garment through repeated washings so I stitch it down; but the glue on the fusible web does a good job keeping the applique in place without pins or basting while I stitch around the edges. There are some nice YT videos demonstrating this. There is a technique for attaching fusible interfacing to the applique by stitching the interfacing wrong side to the applique right side, (use 1/4" seam allowance). Then cut away the interfacing center area, leaving a inch or so border of interfacing all around the outside edge. Then turn the interfacing to the wrong side. You can now press the applique with fusible interfacing to the quilt, and then stitch around the edges. Interfacing doesn't make the applique as stiff as fusible web. I hope this helps some. If it only confused you I apologize I for adding my 2cents worth. Fusible interfacing only has glue on one side, while fusible Web has glue on 2 sides.

I have a bag of Liberty scraps that have not been cut on the grain.I have two projects in mind. one EPP hexagons.and a scrap quilt. can I fuse the fabric in each case?

That's exactly the problem I was having, I didn't know what they were like so I was afraid to order online. I hope this video gives you more of an idea now. In terms of where to buy them, I just ordered online from JoAnn here - bit.ly/1z5hBol They often have a 50% sale on the bolt so you can buy a big bolt at a really good price that will last a LONG time.
