I own a 2007 streetglide with 26,000 miles. Bought it last year, runs great. Get yourself a shop manual and do the work yourself. Next to ridin, there's nothing more satisfying than wrenching on your own bike.

I agree with that if riding is all you want to do with your bike, new is the way to go. There 2 types of people that should buy old bikes (or cars), one with a bunch of money to throw at it or one with the ability to fix it themselves.

One thing people don't realize, is it's not just points and condenser, plugs, wires or carb kits anymore. Those things are available but you've got to find them. There is so much electronic and computer related systems that require special attention, even in cars , most people without special equipment or training can't work on 10 year old "vehicles" . You need 3 things for combustion fuel, heat, and oxygen. All three are now so controlled by computer that working on them in your garage is a thing of the past.

Shawn, You are absolutely right. I used to have a vintage 1979 honda cb650 and I spend a lot time fixing it getting the parts overseas instead of enjoying riding. I sold that after a certain time and I bought a 2014 HD 883 Iron then customized it and now I am really happy and enjoying the ride of my Iron and very easy to maintain. Very interesting topic.

You do not spend near enough time for this channel. I love listening to you riding around on the Iron. I think you dedicated too much time on your daily video channel. Why you even have a daily video channel is beyond me. And I also love your maintenance/repair videos also. You have so much knowledge to share. RSMF.

Acquiring old bikes is a matter of your expectations and goals. If you can get an old bike on the cheap, it represents an opportunity to learn, experiment and create. For people wanting to just ride, I see your point.

I hear what your saying Shawn and I agree with you however due to ill health I had to retire and live on my work pension I took a 60% cut in income overnight no point me crying over it I had to realise hard times were here for a while ( 2 years things might improve slightly ) but new motorcycles had to go to help maintain my family life ! They were flat out luxury so with what little cash I could muster I found a cheap Chinese 250 ( Woody ) and a 50000 mile 750 (Tetley ) and a Ma And Pa shop as you call em I hope they will see me out otherwise my motorcycling days are done , you have to be a very rich person to go motorcycling these days an SGS in the UK 🇬🇧is South of £20000 ! My new VW cost less then that ! and I can use it all year round in our cold wet climate this is a very complicated issue with lots of different endings but nice effort explaining it , my bikes do me just fine there what I can afford and better then no bikes !

Adventure With Woody - Harleys are always a Luxury no matter what your income level. My days of new motorcycles is long since past as well. Retirement has fixed that for me too. Fortunately I have the skills and ability to maintain an older ride, currently a 2003 Suzuki V Strom 1000, which I am enjoying on the back roads here near where Shawn and Kelly live and work.

I only pay cash and won’t go into debt buying a new bike. I’m 35 and debt free. No credit cards, no nothing. Yea I have an old RT and just ordered a cam chain tensioner set from you guys. It sucks that we live in a throw away society now. I was raised in a day that you fix what you got and let some other sucker loose on the deprecation of a new vehicle. I also won’t own anything you have to have a degree to work on. I love Beemers but your right about the parts issue. That’s why my next bike will be an older Harley. Just for the simple fact you can always find parts and you can work on it yourself. Can’t do that with a newer BMW.

I guess I am lucky that I can work on my own bikes. All of my bikes are over ten years old now. I keep them garaged, and in tip top shape. They all run like new. I have been careful to buy models that have had long runs so parts are still available. I have less money invested in all 3 of my bikes than if I had bought one new top of the line large touring bike. I seriously would not be afraid to ride any of them across the country, and back. With a little knowledge of sources, parts are still available for all three. I certainly can understand your point of view working at a dealership. When I worked in repair shops I hated seeing old clunkers dropped off. The general public rarely wanted to pay to have it repaired, and, or serviced the way they should be. The bikes had often been abused, and neglected for years. Of course any business dealing with the public's ignorance can have it's problems. I will grant you that today's modern bikes are much more reliable than the bikes I grew up with back in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. That being said I certainly would not be afraid to purchase a well kept low mileage bike 15 years old like a Harley, or a Goldwing. They are still great machines, and with a little knowledge on how to repair, and maintain them they can be a lot of value for the money. I certainly see a lot of them still out there even older than that. That are still giving their owners a lot of reliable miles.

My wife and I are going through some of this now as we just retired her 98 heritage soft-sided from road trips. It has 90k on it and on our last trip we had a lot of problems and found the dealers out of state very hesitant to work on it. I ended up buying tools and doing some repairs in the motel parking lot. One dealer in Salt Lake City was super helpful though and called in a tech on his day off to Change the stator on his day off. I gave the tech a 100 $ tip for him being so generous with his time he took away from his family to help us out. She kept her Softball but we added a 14 road king to our stable for her road trips. Now I have to begin hunting for a bike to replace my 99 RK for many of the same reasons. I have almost 80 k on it and other than maintenance it has never failed me, ever. It has the old mm fuel injection though that hardly anyone knows how to work on now, especially when traveling out of state.

The only type of person that should buy an older bike (of any brand) is on who can CONFIDENTLY work on it themselves. Confidently is the key here. Im a professional mechanic and i cant tell you how many times ive had a job where the owner thought they could muddle through and it turned out they couldnt. Owning an older bike can be very rewarding but they almost all will require work. Bikes with a lot of miles will need wear items replaced. Waay worse are bikes with few miles. These bikes have been sitting and sitting is the worst thing that can happen to pretty much any mechanical device. Yes im sure you bought a 15 year old bike for $500 and all it needed was the air changed in the tires but thats not the norm.

There's a local speed shop that will work on my older bikes. I asked what he would've charged to put new tires on and his answer was $25 each. I didn't know he did tire work and already had them done at the dealer. It took the dealer less than an hour and a half and I was charged $250!

I know exactly what you are saying about older bikes. My wife & I tour and we have had a close call getting an older '98 bike repaired on a trip. I recently sold a '99 model and retired the '98 model to local duty only and added a couple of late model bikes to replace them on trips. Keep the rubber side down!

Shawn, I am so glad that you at least briefly acknowledged that sometimes you can either find an older mechanic who is knowledgeable about your older bike, or be personally committed to doing most of your own repairs. Had I not undertaken my own repairs on my used 1972 BMW R75/5 when I moved to New York City years ago, I would not have been able to afford both rent and owning and enjoying that motorcycle. And working on my own bike made me much closer to it. It was a bonding experience and it gave me much more confidence that I could take it cross country, which I promptly did! Working on many high-mileage cars and many of the early-model Hondas during high school sure helped. That said, It sure is good to have the financial resources today to buy newer bikes and enjoy the luxury of paying professionals like yourself for servicing my new water-cooled RT.

Yes, you at least need a good deal of mechanical knowledge to go down that path, I was in the historic motorcycle club for years, and with that you get all the knowledge from the older blokes plus the connections needed for Spares and workshops etc. And another good thing today, is the fact that there are so many cool retro bikes available brand new!

If you want a machine to wrench on yourself in the garage then older is the way to go. I, however, am not equipped with that type of know-how so I like to buy new/newer and enjoy the warm, fuzzy feeling of a warranty. Also, keeping techs and dealerships in business is a good thing. Once they’re gone they are gone and then all the “deal seekers” will complain about an entire industry disappearing. If you can’t do it you pay someone to do it. Simple as that. Awesome video and thoughts, as always. 👍🏻😎👍🏻

Shawn, it makes perfect business sense for Harley-Davidson to move a plant to Thailand to build Motorcycles for that Market Share. Same with building a plant in Europe to build Motorcycles sold to the European Market. If I was in charge of Harley-Davidson I’d do the same thing. Shawn, I own a Harley-Davidson M50 Sport. I bought it when I was 15-16 years old. It’s in need of restoration. It was a cool little Bike to ride in fields and up and down alleys. These Pit style Bikes were built in Italy by a company called Aermacchi

I can relate to your point story. Lmao. I was cruising my 57 tbird and stopped into a Ford dealership to pick up some things for my 2005 tbird. Had a crowd of people from the dealership around it when I came out. Mechanic asked what kind of car it was. Had to laugh. At a Ford dealership with a 57 ford thunderbird. One of America's icon vehicles. Just goes to show, most of these kids born in the late 90s aint never seen American graffiti and they just don't care if its not a high revving 4 banger or newer muscle car. I'm sure the same goes towards bikes. I never used to pay anyone to turn a wrench. But then I got old and wound up severely wounded. I cannot work on anything anymore. So selling the 57, giving my kid my 05 bird and 2014 challenger RT. Buying a triglide and a motorhome and seeing the country. I have become a RUB. It sucks but in all honesty the guy riding a 1996 softail but says he loves HD, is not really a customer of HD. You know the supposed purist. They got all the HD nicknacks, and the jacket and vest they bought new with the bike. But outside of an occasional t-shirt, they have not spent any money of any merit to HD in 20 + years. Companies are not in business to just be an icon. And when you and I started riding the kehien carb was the newest latest thing. Now computers run everything. The days of working on your own stuff is fading fast. And let's face it, that's what capitalism is about. Providing jobs. Can't do that if nobody buys your product.

Dealers nowadays aren't anything like the 70's. I have always been mechanically inclined and was educated in electricity, so I can do most repairs myself. I learned a lot from the shop mechanics back then just shooting the breeze with them and have always done my own wrenching. Sure glad I did now. Now the mechanics I have asked to talk to just don't have the time or any knowledge of a 10 - 15 year old motorcycle. Pretty sad if you ask me.The golden years of motorcycling are gone. Money talks, anything else, see ya. We are becoming more and more a throw away society. Don't get me wrong, I understand why the dealers don't want to do anything on 10 year old motorcycles. But to me, I try to buy something that will last and take care of it accordingly. I still drive a 76 Dodge truck I got in 1978. My 2004 Chevy still runs great with over 250,00 miles on it. If my 73 Z1 hadn't been stolen, I'd still have it too.

CONFUSED: As a senior citizen my income is very limited. I own a Harley but have been thinking about purchasing a used Can Am RT. Are CanAm's that are 6 to 8 years old a poor investment; are the trikes holding up. As per my Harley, I have found parts readily available on my 2003 Electra Glide. Is this not the case with a CanAm? I have been wanting to ride something without fear of dropping. That is the reason I have been looking at CanAm. I guess I will stay with my Harley. THANK YOU! Today 3/6/19, I have converted my Harley to a 4 wheel trike HAHAHA. My new trike is a blast to ride YEAH. I am keeping my Harley. My neighbors think I have a new bike. you are right but I had to learn the hard way...the last time I had my 1996 road king worked on they put a twin cam oil filter on my newer SandS V80 evo after market eng. which has a big difference in how the oil flows the parts guy didn't even know there was a difference. Till the guy that put the eng. in the bike for me showed him... then they couldn't find brake pads...but then they did... I have spent so much money on this bike! Now my timing plate is missing a beat every now and then. I still have the OE harley carb and it sucks oil from the top end... I really like the bike but am getting to a point where I don't have the money even for the parts at the moment... let alone the labor. Makes me feel stupid for even buying it... Had to get that off my chest. Not much else I can say about it. I live in Portland and was thinking of asking if you had anybody experienced at your shop but it sounds like you don't. Thanks for the pep talk?

Collecting bikes should be for just the love of motorcycle history and nostalgia and people should be able to wrench a bit themselves if they get into it seriously , would never recommend somebody get one to get their feet wet regardless of price , the game today has changed with the industry its similar to what is going on on in the auto industry too... nobody buys today , they lease and turn it in after 36 months when the warrantee is running out and get the newest thing in. You’re are so on the mark Shawn in your explanation of the reality being in the business and your scenario is spot on with an older bike owner coming in and expecting your service dept to preform miracles for free nonetheless ......time is money is so true and finding a old school mechanic with the know how and the tools today is scarce as hens tooth.= $$$

I think there's a secret place somewhere where all the cool old bikes go to hide, waiting to be found..! Lol No but seriously, I'd like to know as well. I'll see someone pull up to the shop with a mint classic, and they are always people that work on their own stuff and stumbled upon a smoke'n deal... Wish I could find some of those! Thanks Rodney!

So what do people who want an affordable motorcycle do? Harley is not always an option because they’ve been asking way way too much for their bikes. What do you recommend?

You're completely right I got a good deal on a 99 with about 10,000 on the clock but I already figured on working on it myself if I mess it up at least it was cheap and I learned what not to do lol

I agree with you old bikes are a problem for owners if you use a main dealer for servicing. I am lucky that I live in the UK, I have '04 GSF1200s that I service myself, but my local shop (Yamaha dealership) is very accommodating anything I can't do they will do for me, and also parts are plentiful and easily sourced over here.

I am surprised you ride with that Forty Eight seat. I had a Forty Eight before my Slim and the seat was the first thing I replaced. That Forty Eight seat is abysmal, lol. I always felt like I was going to slide off the back of the seat. When I bought a Forty Eight 2 years ago I traded in a 12 year old Honda VTX with low miles. I would still have that VTX in my garage if they didn’t take my trade, lol. I am glad I did and finally made it to my first Harley and now my second.

I agree that while old bikes may be cheaper, it might cost a lot to get them back to serious riding shape. I was wondering, isn't that place You stopped the same area where You got the DR stuck in the hole, with the "Busted Foot" the other day? Thanks for taking Us along for the ride

I bought my used 06 Harley last year and it had over 85k. It runs amazingly well. Probably won't get squat for it when I go to trade it in for my new Indian in about 2 years. Edit: Speaking of high labor rates. What should I expect when I go to buy a new Indian Road master, and purchase, for example, a Stage One and Stage two, what kind of discount can I get for Labor rates? I mean do you think the dealer will be willing to give me a discount on labor, or should I expect to pay full labor rates for the addons that I purchase at the time of the new bike? Edit #2: The Harley dealer new me was willing to work on my 12 year old Harley. Granted it was only a rebuild of the front master cylinder. Great information. Thanks for the Video.

Are other manufactures better than Triumph, when it comes to having accessories (not just engine and operational parts) available for several years after a model is discontinued (Only available in India and the UK). I bought a 2017 Thunderbird storm this year and Triumph had already discontinued a number of accessories in North America.

+Jamie Reid I was wondering something similar.... what if you bought a bike from a dealer, had it serviced there as per recommendations and turned up on it's 11th birthday, would they turn you away? I think BMW would think very poorly on a dealership that did that, or even something similar.

I here what you're saying about people getting their panties in a knot over the proposed Taiwan factory but they may have a point. If the bikes that are going to be built overseas normally would be built in the US facilities for export then less motorcycles will be built in the US and so fewer employees will be needed thus losing American jobs. Sadly it's all because of these tariffs wars where, in the end, the consumer is always the victim.

Well tell me this why does new motorcycle cost more to fix the new motorcycle then. 2, Motorcycle today cost to much to buy today so is how can a motorcycle dealer making it today. Because people are not going buy a new motorcycle cost is lot more than older bikes.

Service prices have come way down on newer bikes, as they're making them so much more service friendly. Less to service items and the service intervals are much farther apart. The new bikes aren't too expensive, they are increasing in price yearly just like everything else in the world.... Thanks Brian!

Harley should be making their bikes in the USA and exporting them; not making them in Taiwan or Europe. We are in a trade war and Harley is helping the enemy by allowing that trade war to hurt American workers. They make the product available in the adversarial countries' markets where it would not have been available until we won the trade war and the tariffs were removed. Don't you even see that Shawn?

The current problem, the trade war, was caused by an elected official, who doesn’t understand global economics! Country centric polices will not work out in a global economy. I wouldn’t buy a Harley because it costs over $21 Grand for a machine that is basic. Looked at one for over $51,000. Who can afford that. Too bad for short term, thinking. Hope you all vote for someone who is interested in your economic future.

@@gammaraytube Harley was looking at the factory in Thailand before Trump, that was there excuse to close Kansas City.... Trump has to wage the Trade war, what's the Alternative? Let China produce 100% of the world's products? Thats the way it was going....
