Come along on a drive with Nancy and Rob as we enjoy our retirement in Northern Michigan. We hit three beaches looking for rocks and drove through the Tunnel of Trees along the shore of Lake Michigan.

- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

The greatest thing you can do in life is Educate a willing mind. The next best thing is to change an unwilling mind into doing well in life. I bet you did this. Thank you for doing what most will not. Power duo's at schools like you are a wonderful thing. Cross examining students and making them smart. Michigan man here thanks you for all you did. Happy retirement folks. More time to love the state. Get a camper or RV. Just amazing in your retired years to do this. A small RV is just larger than the truck and it's all you will need.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the really nice comment. We talked about getting an RV, but decided against it. I'm not sure Nancy would want to live in a small RV for very long and I don't think I'd be comfortable driving a larger one. We do plan to do some traveling though.

Love this video, Rob. We were at the beach behind Legg's Inn earlier this month and found some really nice rocks. One of my favorite beaches. I can't believe how many people have been finding agates in Lake Michigan. I almost didn't believe it until I found one myself this spring.

Hi Rob and Nancy and congrats on your retirements :) I wanted to climb through that screen a few times ,especially when you picked up the chert :) I just bought a piece of Australian jasper . Nancy I just went for a walk a few days ago and though my shoe didn't break....I do not advise wearing open back shoes trail walking lol. Thanks for sharing your day with me I loved the beach and the travel there equally :)

I love to listen to the waves hitting shore. Kinda lulls me to sleep. lol Would love to find pretty stones there. I would probably keep everything just because it is different then what we have here in Georgia. We have lots of garnet in everything here. And mica, and quartz of all colors. I am 69 years young and my eyesight is shot but my son loves rock collecting too.

Congrats on the retirement! Interesting to know the Petoskey stones on Lake Michigan are different then Lake Huron. I did not know that. I just finished planning our next year's rock hunting vacation to Alpena area. We had wanted to stay in that area for a few days then move over toward the east to Petosky and surrounding areas but we couldn't find a hotel in the area for days we wanted. So we are just doing our week in Alpena and surrounding areas instead.

I don't think they are all different. According to Wikipedia, there are nine species of Hexagonaria. I think a lot of them can be found in both lakes. It just seems like there's one that I don't find over here not the east side of the state.

@@MichiganRocks oops yes, sorry.... the one in Cross Village with the rocky boat launch. In the beginning of August I was up in Petoskey and did pretty good finding Petoskey stones at Petoskey State Park. I drove up to Fisherman’s Island State Park to check it out. It was so beautiful, but just gray on gray rocks. Lots of imbedded Petoskey stone, like you found at Magnus. But not really any colors to speak of.

@@ModernDayPilgrim What do you find on the Cross Village beach? A couple other people said they like it there too. I thought the rocks were a bit blah, but I didn't give it much of a chance. There was only so much time in the day, and I wanted to get to Petoskey.

@@MichiganRocks most of the rocks I get from there are the bigger ones. I wish I could send you a picture. I use them in my landscape. Although, if you go left at the “rock dock” LOL and travel all the way around the bend on the beach, there is a lot of beach that isn’t as picked over. The colorful rocks are the bigger ones which I do collect and bring home. I also have a video up of my landscape with the rocks from there. It’s a simple display. I’m not an over the top landscaper... lol. But I had to do something with all these. I currently have two buckets of rocks that I am getting ready to use in my landscape. I don’t tumble yet. My hubs says I should. Maybe I will. I’m not experienced in that field and have no idea what to get or what I would need. I have to do a little research. But anyhow, have you been to the beach in GoodHeart? You passed through there on 119.

@@ModernDayPilgrim When you decide to get a tumbler, let me know and I'll help you pick one out. Is the Goodheart beach the one by the old church? If so, we went there last summer, but it was mostly sand. My wife and her parents were with me, so we didn't walk too far. Nice beach if you like sand though.

I ended up retiring a year early because of COVID, so I never really got to experience my last year of teaching. I guess I did experience it, but I didn't know it was my last year. It happened sort of suddenly. I think a job would be much less stressful if you could go in each day knowing you could quit whenever you wanted to.
