My journey has led me to Elektron sequences. Their amazing sequencers can control external gear via midi and CV but it's the conditional trigs that make them special.

Finding the perfect sequencer is like finding the ultimate guitar tone. It's not really possible, but the journey is fun. For the last couple of years I've settled on the Toraiz Squid. I think it's a really great and under appreciated piece of gear.

I borrowed a doepfer dark time a few years ago for two weeks it has been the funnest sequencing experince I've ever had. Extremely limiting but in a fun Berlin school kinda way.

Kilpatrick Carbon - midi in / out, 4x CV/trig out, 6 independent tracks of 64 steps. Each step is polyphonic (so if you want a chord, you don't have to waste 3 tracks). Also indepentent step lengths, and mainly, you can have it loop different parts of the sequence in each track. Track1 can be looping steps 3-15 and track2 looping steps 1-31 (so polymeter easily possible). Also track1 can be 1/4 triples, and track2 dotted 1/16ths. It has arpegiator and many small fun features... as a bonus, it's power switch isn't ON/OFF switch, but OFF / Sequencer ON / MIDI to CV converter ON.

Oh yeah, the struggle is real definitely! As an eurorack fiend I'm happy with Make Noise Rene + Pressure Points. Really intuitive and hands on. And if I need a few extra melodic lines - there's an old sequencers I luckily haven't sold - first Beatstep (not pro, btw it's still useful as midi to cv converter/master clock from Ableton), Microbrute with it's own sequencer and also relatively obscure Doboz Prizma. Only 6 hp, two cv channels and lots of features for a fraction of price. But Prizma is a DIY kit only. So it's perfect if you don't mind to get your hands dirty with some SMD soldering :D

The latest update finally let u record the arp into the internal sequencer which is awesome. AND finally u can move a whole sequenzer pattern in time by holding shift and move the time knop. From my opinion this was absolutely necessary if you don´t have an acme or e-rm timeclock. Even to i´m definitely looking forward to get the circlon 2 as IT REALLY is the Mother of the seq. as u said. Thanks for your hard work doing the videos its really inspiring (got my self a bruel beat oszi because of u) looking forward to your next videos.

The first golden age of the sequencer was 1970-2000. For the first 15 years, sequencers were mostly analog, you tuned each note individually. The 80s brought standalone digital sequencing and computer based sequencing. This just evolved gradually up until 2000. After the millennium there were few hardware sequencers, everything was DAW... until to the DAWless trend and Eurorack has brought back hardware sequencers, groove boxes and yes analog sequencers!

You have forget my favourite midi sequence that's very easy and fast to use with a lot of functions! The Squarp Pyramid :)

For melodies, I personally I am in absolute love with the Analog 4's sequencer. Not long ago it got external MIDI sequencing via firmware update. So it now has CV, MIDI, real time transposing while staying in scale, and whatnot.

I've been looking at the beatstep pro for awhile but this is exactly what I've been looking for. And for only $400? I'm absolutely sold

Thanks, nice video, I will probably get this keystep pro as an add-on for my push 2.0 controller, having 2 controllers is fun and gets you in different idea modes, I would use all channels for different synths and the push 2.0 for the samples and beats. BTW, the teenage engineering OPZ is a really fun sequencer as well and can go quite deep. it can do some really amazing and innovative stuff (pattern creation, effects, randomization of patterns, arping, bar variations on patterns, transposing entire sections, sampling anything, etc) and you can take it anywhere and create ideas/songs on it. I travel a lot, and the OPZ has allowed me to be 10x more productive than normal and I got to a point where I created so many ideas on it that I could not keep up and had to take a break from the OPZ to allow myself to get some songs into my DAW. Also some of the OPZ stock sound engines sound really fresh so it can stand on it's own as a multiple instrument musical device.

The software sequencer Numerology by Five12 is quite amazing. It can control anything, is polyphonic and can run multiple sequences simultaneously. There is now a hardware incarnation of it (Vector) but it requires a somewhat different approach to programming

I’ve got to get my hands on the Nerdseq, I’ve had so much fun with LSDJ. But over all for sequencers, Elektron is king for me all of the Elektron boxes are so feature packed with their ability to record automation on the fly and sequence other instruments while also being able to add effects there’s nothing better on the market for hardware sequencers in my opinion

I’m pretty psyched to get my hands on a KSP. Imho Arturia really nailed the workflow on both the BSP and the KSP!

The Sipario X is really a great tool btw. But i see you like using a sequencer in a lot of love performances where as I like the Pyramid because I use it for mostly making songs…with a beginning, middle and end. It so sure it would be great for live gigs.

The nerdseq reminds me of the soundtrackers on the Amiga computer. My favorite sequencer is Korg Gadget on the iPad. They’ve added a midi-out gadget to it about a year ago.

The Squarp Pyramid is pretty dope too. Kind of like the Cirklon way but a bit simpler.

A shout should also be given to the Electron Analog 4 mk2 (although I think the mk1 also has the same features when it comes to sequencing). You have CV sequencing with 4 CV outs which can be used to lock parameters per step as well as probability and now since the latest update you have midi sequencing too (which includes polyphony), 6 tracks of sequencing.

Having used software sequencers since the 1989 tracker days and MPCs. I would like a sequencer where you have a pattern sequencer for looping parts that can be switched/queued like the MPC pattern switching which allows you to arrange the drum rhythm patterns on the fly bringing in a fill or pattern b etc in tandem with linear tracks for the simple multi track MIDI recording of chromatic (i.e. non drum/percussion) instruments. But the catch is being able to switch loop patterns (they don't really need to loop but usually would) but have more than one pattern that can be switched but multiple patterns. IOW, with an MPC all tracks are tied to one pattern and you can only switch a collection of tracks i.e. pattern together. But with multiple patterns playing at the same time you could have one collection of patterns emulating a live conga player and another set of patterns emulating a drum kit switching between fills and patterns. I assume (have to confirm with more research) that this is what Ableton live allows. And possibly the new 'clips' window in Digital Performer. Those are my two sequencer concepts. The switchable virtual drummer or other looping phrases and the linear tracks playing along side. Thus you could always rearrange rhythmic/looping arrangements live on the fly. Strangely my MPC5000 doesn't allow recording of live 'next seq' pattern switching. I think it does record 'mute pad' automation though. With live 'next seq' on MPC or Ableton Live pattern queuing you could perhaps facilitate some live jamming with human musicians and interact somewhat with the pattern switching. All rhythms are prepared on a sequencer rather than a live drummer who can interact in the moment. Phew! Time to watch some Ableton live tutorial videos. PS, I think the Ensoniq TS10 etc had separate linear and pattern tracks in it's sequencer. And the MPC4000 also had pattern and linear tracks. Not sure if you could switch patterns on the fly/'I've against the linear track with these sequencers though.

Absolute utterly different approach for doing sequencing but I was extremely impressed by the RM1x, though I'm admittedly pretty alright with menu diving for complicated features. Got a beatstep pro coming in tomorrow, super excited to give it a shot and get a feel for the more improvisational workflow.
