1/2 2003 Ekaterina Kondaurova reportage [with transaltion]

It's short reportage from series of reportages about life in Russia, filmed in 2003. This episode is titled: One day with Mariinsky dancer. Dancer chosen to this reportage was Ekaterina Kondaurova, then 20 years old. Camera is following her during her typical work day in theatre. You can see her during class and rehearsals (with Olga Chenchikova).
Translation is not perfect but I did my best. If there is something you really don't understand you can ask in comments. I didn't translate all thing that speaker says because sometimes he says obvious things like what are point shoes.
Because they talk a lot and it may be dificult to understand who says what, in subtitles I named everyone who speaks. Woman who followed Kondaurova is described as B, Kondaurova as K. Speaker has no description.
Quality is not very good and I suggest watching fullscreen to clearly see subtitles. Sometimes you have to pause because they may disappear very quickly.

Absolutely fascinating - thank you so much for the translation! At 5''10" she's taller than I thought! I thought the reporter asked her too many (impertinent) personal questions which, because of her youth, she actually answered! Shocking that some days she ate *nothing* - no wonder she was so tired. She was much too thin then - she looks so much better now! She's a fabulous dancer and deserves to be a Principal!

Thank you so much for the English sub-titles. I don't speak Russian at all, but it seems to me that your translation captures something about the combination of directness and subtlety that is characteristic of Russian speakers. (I know many.) This woman is an amazing artist. She was one of those who danced The Chosen One in the centenary performances of The Rite of Spring, that followed the Mariinsky performance at the Théâtre des Champs-Élyées in 2013. (I think that Daria Pavlenko did the one THE night and then shared the tour performances with Kondaurova.) She strikes me as one of those performers for whom it's about the art more than about self-expression; and she has all the intelligence and technical equipment to deliver.

Hooray! I am going to see Kondaurova in Jewels, Aug 27. With Somova, Tereshkina, Somolkina, etc! I saw these dancers in Jewels in 2008, in NY. Also in all Forsythe program. Kondaurova was super!

@Pearlaceous I'm just getting in to the ballet.I live in NYC and I figured that if I live in a place that offers up stuff like the ballet,then why not go see it. Thanks for the insight, I'm beginning to figure out that these dancers are admired the same way rock stars and professional athletes are. They at least deserve it.

@lemonite1 Kondaurova got some awards for her Anna so she's definetely worth to see. As for Lopatkina she always shows deep portrayal and she also has great chemistry with her partner, Smekalov. I can't say much about Vishneva but reviews after premiere were rather less positive than Kondaurova's and Lopatkina's.

@lemonite1 You know, there is a ballet dancer who listen to metal and plays guitar, his name is Marcin Krajewski. On his channel, sciosior, he has ballet videos and videos of him playing guitar.

@Pearlaceous I'm going to see "Anna Karenina" at Lincoln Center. There are 3 shows each with a different principal dancer. The first night is Diana Vishneva, second is Ulyana Lopatkina, and the third is Yekaterina Kondaurova. If you were to choose one,which night would you go?

@Lauriefishbone I think the heights of many of the Mariinsky dancers can be deceiving because many of them are fairly tall. The ones who look short may actually be above average height. Makes me happy, because I'm a tall dancer as well!

@FerocityQueen I trust your opinion but I already got the tickets. I could only go on Wednesday night. As far as Symphony in C, the dancers are;Viktoria Tereshkina, Andrian Fadeyev, Ulyana Lopatkina, Yevgeny Ivanchenko, Evgenya Obraztsova(is that the Obraztsova in which you refer?), Vladimir Shklyarov, Maria Shirinkina, Alexei Timofeyev. Choreographed by George Balanchine.

@Pearlaceous I'm not educated enough about ballet to make an educated guess but, I did look at videos( at your advice) on the 3 principals. They are not in the Miriinsk/Kirov for nothing. Turns out that the only date I could make is for Wednesday night-Ulyana Lopatkina/Yuri Smekalov.In my humble opinion, they dance beautifully.BTW don't tell anyone I'm going to the ballet, I usually listen to Death Metal, Hardcore Punk and ride a skateboard.

Hello! Lucky you! Have you got a few days to make up your mind? If so, then I'd look at a few videos of all threee dancers here on KZfaq to see which one *you* like the best - it's such a personal thing! If I had the choice though, I'd probably go for Kondaurova, because of the three she's the rising star and I do love her! But I don't think you'll go far wrong with any of those! Hope you enjoy it!

@lemonite1 LOL! Yuri Smekalov is one of the best actor-dancers at the Mariinsky and is so seriously hot that he could stir passion in a marble ballerina! :-) He and Lopatkina together should be sensational - and she is rightly world renowned as one of their leading ballerinas. I think it will be amazing. No - won't tell anyone LOL! - and BTW I still adore Alice Cooper! :-)

@looovecats That's awesome. A ballet dancer who likes metal and plays guitar. But that,I can agree with. Have you ever met a heavy metal rocker who dances ballet and wears leotards? Or spandex at least.......lol
