How To Share Large Ableton Files (Google Drive & Dropbox Examples)

Skip these steps and the person you’re sharing a large Ableton file with will not be pleased.
To avoid being a jerk, and to make sure the file can be opened properly, follow the steps in this simple process. You’ll thank me for it later.
Don’t be an amateur who sends files that don’t work properly. Be like a pro and polish up your communication and file-sharing expertise. Seems small, but the pros are the ones who nail even these tiny details.

What if you just want to store your set in the cloud in order to save space on your hard drive. Do you have to collect all and save then?

Hey Will! Are you aware of any compatibility issues with sending a Live project created in a Mac and opening it with a Windows PC? I've noticed some of the files, specifically the ones with symbols like colons don't open properly in a Windows PC.

Great question…Technically Ableton Files are cross compatible PC/Mac no difference. But…. There are some symbols that don’t work on Windows, so if your files have that…they won’t work. Which again isn’t an issue with Ableton, but a windows related issue

@@fromstudiotostage (Real quickly just gonna piggyback off of your comment elmike) but I'm lookin to move all my projects onto Dropbox so I can wipe my pc soon and sell it. Since windows already has it's own restrictions on certain symbols, is it gonna be an overall easier process moving it to a mac if I go that route since the chances of compatibility issues will be lower? Also since I'll still be working on some of the files before I fully wipe, should I make a copy of the projects after collecting all and then compress and upload? Or will it still be accessible after compressing it and uploading it to Dropbox? (Also really well put together video brother)

I did all the steps and they did not work! One thing I did notice is that once I did the "collect all and save" there was this issue. I clicked on the project and it just opened it. It did not show the samples and backup. So how do I get to them? Where are they?

Hey, there is a much better solution built right into ableton live. File -> Manage Files -> Manage Project (collect all missing files from all sets here) -> Create Pack. Ableton Live Packs are a single compressed file that you can use to send to other people.

Hey Eric-thanks for watching the video and sharing your thoughts! It's interesting you say it's a "better way", I don't personally see it that way. Maybe you can argue since it's all done in Ableton that makes it better? I haven't sent an Ableton Live Pack in probably 15 years (or received one in that same time), and have had zero issues sending compressed files this way. Unsure of how it's "better" other than a different way to achieve the same purpose. This is also a single compressed file you can send to other people as well.

I am considering parallel running windows and mac just because people keep sending me logic projects(😮). Macbooks are stupidly expensive just for logic. With very short shelf life OS support compared to windows and macs have zero storage expansion slots to optimize multiple aux nvme ssds for a) plugins b) audio recordings c) project files. So why bother just for logic files? Can you transform logic projects into ableton easily? The problem with pointer references to vst plugins info is saved in ableton and the plugins are always going to be in a different location on a mac. So basically after importing an ableton project from windows to mac you would end up repointing all vsts. Anyone ever fixed that issue? Dont like using audio only stems i want cake and eat it, full midi, full audio, full fx references!😂
