If you were here I would give you a BIG HUG (I'm a woman). I did exactly what you said & it worked like a charm. It had been stuck on 75 degrees so I just learned to live with it. I live in Florida so I was melting in the summer. The winter wasn't as bad since I just dressed in 3 layers of clothes, mukluks & gloves. Thanks again. ;)

I hate to tell you but this is a temporary fix for the early stages of the problem. The real problem is the ribbon cable (3 wires) between the circuit board attached to the blend knob that runs to the main HVAC control board. When you turn the blend knob right to left over the years, the small circuit board turns slightly with it which caused the outside wires of the ribbon to break. When you tighten the nut, it holds the small circuit board more steady for a short while. Eventually the wires fully break and it stops working. Remove the HVAC from the console, open the case and look at the ribbon cable and you will see the solder has broken on the outside two wires. Using 3 new small wires, just solder them to the existing contacts and jump the points, by-passing the old ribbon cable. I have done a few of these over the years and always mean to video the real repair. Hope this helps.

This was tremendous. Wife has been complaining about inconsistent heat for quite a while, and local repairmen just stared scratching their heads. Inside of a minute I had the problem corrected. Only thing I did wrong was I told her the problem was a loose nut behind wheel (instead of knob)...Doctor says I should make a complete recovery. Thanks for the great tip.

To fix it right re-solder the broken wires on the potentiometer. Tightening the nut only puts pressure on the broken wires which will work until you hit a bump in the road and they lose contact again.

I have fixed many of these lose knobs. The problem is the wires brake at the circuit board. You can fix the wires but you have take the unit apart and soider the wires back to the board. There are 3 wires to repair. The wires are in a ribbon and brake when the nut gets lose and the wires move back and forth with the switch being lose. A new unit is like 700-800 dollars or repair the wires for 3 hours labor.

Hey Phillip, yes I'm still around. The auto repair business has been very good to me and my family. I retired a few years ago, sold my shop, and have had a couple medical issues, age can do that to us. I still make teaching videos but not as often. Thanks for watching over the years.

Sir, what I couldn't figure out is how you got to the point that you determined it wasn't mechanical. Did you attempt to adjust the knob and felt that it was loose. I think we sometimes get blinders on and forget to look at the things staring us in the face. It would have been hours before I would have thought to check that nut. Thank you for all your wonderful posts.

This is 9 years ago but in case anyone sees this, my problem isn’t the nut but the actual metal rod. The metal rod keeps spinning inside the hole that’s inside the nut. How would I fix this? Please if anyone can help

For now it is enough to tighten the nut with your fingers... or with pliers, if available. Greetings
@Qwerty8
@Qwerty8 3 жыл бұрын
If necessary, the nut can also be easily fixed with nail polish (if available 😅), after it has been tightened as firmly as possible with the fingers and nothing wobbles anymore.

bottom line here is.... you might ?? be able to tighten the loose nut to keep the whole switch from turning also when you turn the control .. but.. the wires are already broken.. period... you might get lucky enough to tighten it and they will touch together again and function.. but the ribbon wires are already broken if the A/C goes in and out when you turn the control knob...
@locotx215
@locotx215 4 жыл бұрын
This is correct. You are tighening up the knob so it doesn't move the ribbon and the broken solder. But the fact remains the solder is already broken and moving the wire will disconnect again eventually. But there is a video how to make this simple repair.
