Loose is mostly king because it teaches you proper board control and trains specific muscles to compensate for turns, stability etc. Tight is better for specific scenarios like coming down big stair sets or hill bombing.

Confirmed! Loose trucks are sketchy for hill bombs. I just setup a short cruiser board with some turny longboard trucks and it is so sketchy going down any hill.

Agreed, until I started bombing a lot of hills. And I have to use looser to med loose trucks to bomb hills comfortably, for me I ride a tighter loose set of trucks for skating “street” and more tech stuff. 😂 Basically I ride Indy’s with the bolt to the edge on trans and hills and ventures with loose bushings but “tightened” for street and tech. I’ve even been riding a combo of hard and med bushings in my Indy’s to get a certain feel, bottom med bushings and hard black tops.

Whats better is what you're used to, i struggle to skate loose these days, i did when i was young, but i was so fast that the wheel bite ended up sending me flying and cutting me up pretty bad a few times, so i tightened up the trucksto prevent it, then thps cane out, I can't remember which one, maybe 4, bams special was the one wheel firework show, and I had to learn 1 wheel manuals and one wheel nose manuals, so I went super tight, to the point i had to file my kingpins down for grinds... I did get the one wheels to a decent level. Now I just tighten a couple of turns out of the box and usually lly

Trying not to sound mean or rude at all but the biggest difference in loose/tight trucks was evident when you were doing the tre flip test. The loose trucks were easier for you, mainly because you lazily let the board spin and rotate due to the trucks being so loose and naturally wanting to turn/spin. It was clear you dont actually know how to tre flip when you tightened the trucks. As mean as that sounds, you dont actually know how to do the trick without letting the board lazily spin for you with loose trucks. It would be beneficial for you to incrementally tighten your trucks and try to get consistent with that trick, which allows you to break free from the "lazy" scoop. Some might disagree and say if you can land a trick, you know how to do it. Just my thoughts, I think with the tight/loose truck debate you have to find a middle ground where you get advantages, but you aren't sacrificing your own skill for shortcuts.

To me it makes sense people like daewon and real technical skaters who do a lot of tight closer to the ground tricks prob have better luck with looser trucks for the most part, and anyone who's doing like big stair sets, rails, transition, prob prefer tighter trucks

Hard bushings load up a little bit better, probably. Like if you’re learning tre’s it might get easier with hard bushings or tighter trucks. That’s what I think anyway. A few months ago, I hadn’t skated in like 15 years (for real). I went into it knowing I would still be able to kickflip but I lacked balance. I was using hard bushings cranked all the way to feel stable on my board. But when I started jumping off drops and going to the park more often, medium bushings just felt better and no more hot pockets. Which feels like wheelbite for your ankles tbh I still use my hard bushings board, but I backed off on the nut and use it to practice big spins and ride on grinds and stuff like that. Also; you’re right about pop being more difficult with loose bushings, I just put my back foot more in the pocket, or closer to the bolts/concave and it gives you a straight pop with medium bushings. I picked that one up just watching yuto skate, haha. The closer to the trucks, the less leverage against it you will have. Have you ever used a long breaker bar? The longer the bar, the more leverage you get. So if you pop on the tip of the tail you will probably end up popping on the toe side or heel side. Whereas if you’re closer to the truck, then the board will only pivot on the axles and not the kingpin. In theory.

I was having a ton of problems with laserflips, balance issues since the foot positioning is so awkward that by the time I was about to pop I lost all control and balance and always ended up doing the flip with one feet on the ground... I tightened the trucks to the max and this problem disappeared.

I’m a taller heavier skater mainly my height. One of my biggest complaints are stock bushings on any truck. I’ve found that Indy’s hardest bushings are really good for my weight (215lb). I ride tighter on the tighter medium side. Tried bones hardcore, CANNOT stand the popping sound of the plastic inside the bushing. Okay, enough of my bushing madness. Dope video dude, thanks for posting this!!!🤙

I'm with ya... I'm 6'2" and about 215lbs so I need tighter trucks. I've learned to skate with the rear truck really tight and very firm bushings, but my front truck is looser so I can turn when pushing. The downside is that I have to kickturn every transition, but honestly Its kinda fun! Almost every trick starts with a kickturn motion, lifting up that front truck to go into a trick. I just suck at fakie riding the board backwards.

I’m glad my observation about the pivot joint being squared but slightly rounded, made sense, I was worried it was confusing lol. I think for beginners it’s good to start on the tighter end, because they don’t have the balance yet, it can be scary and demoralizing for them, but as they progress and improve in all areas, they can loosen the trucks. The loose trucks will allow them to turn and catch their balance, just like you said (the board won’t want to keep going straight like when tight, it will turn with them). Ultimately it’s all personal preference, but you don’t want to go to extremes as both can be problematic, like wheel bite from it being too loose.
@ZackDowdy

That was exactly my experience, tight as first then eventually looser to get that board control.

I wish I could skate loose or even medium trucks, but I just can't, I lose all confidence and stability even when landing and everything rockets or just feels "floppy" for lack or a better word. I gave it a whole damn year even to try getting used to it and adapt, and I just cannot. I've been skating since 2007 with tight trucks so that probably doesn't help, my body EXPECTS them to be tight, it literally feels wrong and gross with anything else. I'm okay with it though, if having tight trucks costs me style and makes me look more "robotic" or whatever, then so be it, at least my tricks pop high and are consistent and clean. Also Nyjah, Yuto, and Rodney all have tight trucks, among other god skaters, so maybe we're onto something, just a crackpot theory lmao. Also maybe it helps that my bottom bushings are 90a and my top bushings are 94a, who knows, but that definitely helps me feel like i'm not on a solid log even though my trucks are tight.

Daewon only rides his front truck like its falling off, and laser tight on the rear. I think it's important to remember one man's slappy (especially with mainly street skaters that dont ride vert or big bowl) is another man's sloppy ( especially if he rides a lot of vert and big ramps). I'm returning after being sidelined for nearly two decades after car wrecks and bad insurance laws in my state. Its surprising to see how nasty some folks get talking about this online. I came up in 88 and the standard was tight trucks and hard bushings or you'd get speed wobble on big ramps(death). The old vert guys wouldn't ride my setup thinking it was too loose for ramp or transition with stock trackers. It always seemed crappy trucks had sloppy wobbly bushings that wont tune to tight. Nowadays I'm getting bullied for talking about speed wobble and my major disappointment with ACE even with their" hard" bushings loaded up. Its mainly how they don't tune like a truck is supposed to, should adjust to loose or tight when needed and the design issue with the hanger blocking a socket style wrench sucks. I like my mini logos stock and broken in tight most people my age and weight complain about are too loose, and I get trolled for talking about it. Even the rad younger kids at the park hate on ace and prefer tight trucks with hard bushings, even ones sponsored by ACE dis them. What's being said online and what's what's said by the legit every day skaters in person is night and day. Telling kids that are learning to drop in for the first time that " loose trucks save lives" is kinda BS and dangerous in my opinion, especially with the rise in parks and transition. If you have to stand in cross lock just to stay on flat land your doing it wrong, riding ramps anyway. Loose trucks vibrate and throw you off your board if you go too fast. Why do you think Daewons ankle is blown out? Ramps and wobbly trucks. Tight trucks not only save your life on a ramp, they are pretty much the only way to go if you talk to vert and big bowl guys.

@LegoDude182 Not on a big vert ramp dude, and corners are just sideways vert ramps. Speed wobble is real, if you ever rode big fast ramps with loose trucks you wouldn't be talking. I ride looser to medium tension trucks with medium bushings, just not sloppy, there is a difference. My shit is more loose than the kids that rip on the bowls and the old vert guys when we trade setups, they hate ACE and think they are too loose to be comfortable. Kids and old guys alike at the parks always dis ACE and orther "slappy" truck designs, because they wont tune properly and the hanger and axle block the kingpin from a socket seating properly. Please read my actual post before responding with genralizations and assumptions please.

@spacelab7135 I wasn't talking about a big vert ramp. I do skate fast ive bombed hills in thrasher contests. As I get faster with pumping I'm slowly tightening my trucks but very little. I'm not talking sloppy loose either but by no means are my trucks tight at all.. everyone I skate with (people rocking truck sponsors board sponsors ect) keeps them as loose as me if not more so. People like different things I personally skate indy but most ppl I skate with rip pools with loose ace trucks so idk.
