Loose Thumbstick Fix

In this Tinker Time I show how to fix a loose thumbstick on an Xbox One Elite Controller.
This method should work on any controller with a loose thumbstick.
The bit is a special bit called a Torx T8.

I know this is late but I was looking at some of the comments about the screws and screw-drivers used. It is a tamper-proof, security Torx to be specific. Normal Torx is without the peg/hole.

Just a comment, but once you have the controller apart, i have found that lightly touching two corners of the joystick ( the grey handle part) with your soldering iron will deform the plastic handle just enough to tighten up the fit. I have fixed HUNDREDS of these like this and have had none come back. This is NOT for stick drift, just loose fit between joystick and thumbstick "hat" if you call it that. 2 second fix! takes longer to disassemble then to fix.

After 5 months after owning the controller the thumb sticks became loose and after 2 years, which is just recently, the x and a buttons became sticky. My grips and shoulder buttons and still in prefect condition.

So the rubber handle and the loose joystick really is a problem everybody is having with them. Good that theres other type of trigger stops out there!

That’s good but almost all new Xbox controllers; Microsoft or third party have a little wobble in the sticks. I’ve learned if it doesn’t get worse in a couple weeks it typically won’t. Problem is it’s irritating for me and those like me. I’ve got a7 year old Xbox one controller that’s been used so much and dropped hundreds of times and it still has wobble.

Isn't weird how shit just disappears when you move? So many times, I'll look through the place I'm, moving out of...there's NOTHING left. Not even paper towels left behind....you get to your new place, and bam! I'm missing something...lost to the world

i have issue with the right stick thumbstick, when i turned the controller upside down it kinda pops out a bit. Is this considered a loose thumbstick?

Ya it's loose. You can use the tape trick or go to Amazon & order new sticks.

Yup. I got it fixed. Not as good as new, but huge improvement compared to what it was. Tape didn't work for me thou. Filled the hole with some cotton wool and pushed the stick in there really hard!

Other one fell of literally on my hand few nights ago and that why this whole fixing operation of mine got started. Original plan was to replace elite grip with normal controllers grip, but it didn't fit.

I can't see from the camera not focusing but which part is worn? Is it the grey rod or the thumbstick hole? I assume it's the grey part that's plastic but I'm really hoping it's the thumbstick since those are dime a dozen on Amazon.

The Thumbsticks. However with an Xbox elite controller can't be replaced the same way because of the removable sticks.

@@LowPingKing I don't understand. You can buy the magnetic thumbstick on Amazon that match the elite controller exactly (I know this because I have the same ones on my ps4 controller and I own an elite controller) if you are saying the metal part that stays in the controller is the part that gets worn then I'll just go ahead and grab a new pair off Amazon. But if it's the grey rod that is part of the analog switch that the metal thumbstick "bell" that is worn then I'm out of luck.

I didn't know that it was possible to get replacements. It's definitely the stick. Not the grey rod. So you should be good to pick up replacements. Let me know how that goes if you remember.

You sir were correct. Just threw a new set of magnetic "bells" onto my elite and problem solved. Tight as a nun. I'm really shocked it was the bell not the "grey stick" since the stick is hard plastic and the bell is metal. You'd think the stick would have worn first which is why I never even considered just swapping the bells. Thanks for getting back to me though cause if you didnt I'd still be gaming with loose sticks.

I have a problem with my right thumbstick when you press it in while playing a game like call of duty or Fortnite to crouch it feels really different to what it was like on Friday it almost feels like the thumbstick is going to snap and it also moves by itself when you press it in

Unfortunately not it has to be a Torx t8 screwdriver.

I recomend just ditching the metals ones and go with plasic alot better fix and will last i trued tape it slides down the pole and gets stuck up on the mechanisms of the joystick

It's a specialty screw called a torx t8. If you look real close Lee in the middle of the screw there's a little Pole. That's what makes it special. If you don't have a torx t8 you can sometimes use a bobby pin but you'll have to melt the little plastic and off the bobby pin and be very careful to not break the little nub in the screw.

I just cleaned it and it still doesn’t work, like I can still move and stuff but if I want to sprint by clicking down it doesn’t register

There's actually a very tiny button off to the side inside the controller. When you click your stick down it has a little lever and clicks that button. That button or lever may be broken? I've never had that happen though. More likely that it's just sticky.

Tape REALLY... It doesn't last great idea... Try going to an older hardware store an ask for a piece or package of thin flat rubber gasket material and try again. Rubber will out last controller.
