Canada - life in the countryside!
After visiting the largest city in Canada and one of the greatest sights in the country it was time to experience the peaceful life in the Canadian countryside.
I was very happy that near the place where our friends live there is a huge farmers’ market. It’s called St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market and it’s worth visiting. Here they offer all kinds of food and products from local farmers. There are resellers too but they’re few. The products were arranged very nicely and everything I tried was very tasty. My undisputed favourite were the fried apple rolls (fritters). They’re like puffed pastry filled with apples and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar after being fried. The line of people for the apples was colossal but we didn’t need to wait too long. The organization of work at the stall was good.
The place is so big that you need hours to walk all around it. I visited the market a couple of times but I never had enough time. If one day I end up in Ontario again, I’ll definitely drop into the market just because it’s great, has a unique atmosphere and very tasty food. Of course, it must be in the summer. The bad thing about this market is that in the winter, which is long, there are no stalls outside and the market is significantly smaller.
Before going to Canada I didn’t know Canadians are big fans of beer. Almost in every bigger town local beer is produced. Near the market in the town of St. Jacobs there was a lovely small brewery where we filled two big bottles. They had around ten varieties of beer that they made there. You can try all of them before picking the one that suits your taste. You can take the beer in bottles for home or drink it at the brewery. Great!
We had booked kayaks and a canoe and after lunch we headed to the river nearby - the Grand River. In some places it was super shallow and I often sank, but I had a lot of fun, it was so pleasant in the water.
We spent the evening at our friends’ house, we had a barbecue and drank nice beer. It was a great day spent with good friends!
